No, the parents are or they can take the risk of locking it out of sight such as in the trunk.
yes they can, and nobody is perfect and it seems the one time you are an imperfect human and forget to do so, is the one time that another imperfect human comes along and sneetches your stuff.
And if you mean to remove the iPads every time you leave your car, why can't you do that with a dvd wallet?
Compare the size and weight of a 100 DVD wallet with the size and weight of a portable player (iPad, Archos, whatever new whizbang small tablet). Also consider that 100 DVDs cost double that of an iPad, and significantly more than double that of a cheaper alternative.
Also, the iPad, or player of your choice will likely be taken out of the car anyways to be used for another purpose. When I get home, I'm probably going to bring the iPad in to surf the web or do other iPaddy things, while the dvd case would likely not have a reason to be brought in.
Ripping to a quality that is sufficient for viewing on a 9" screen, would require just about no degradation in quality to fit 100 movies in 64GB. Especially if you're talking about kids movies which tend to have less complicated scenes than the typical effects heavy sci-fi movie,
carrying a hundred DVDs around really is easier than ripping them to flash memory, and you wont have to try and destroy the quality
Yep- why destroy the quality with a rip when you can destroy the complete original disk by carrying it around in the car with you.
And no, telling me that I can spend more money to have the basic rights of owning a device isn't a solution, thats just a legal version of bribery.
Exactly what rights don't you have with owning this device? No seriously - I'd really like to know as that term gets thrown around here an awful lot.
It is your device...jailbreak it and install apps from anywhere. Or write your own and install them without jailbreaking. Take it apart, grind up the chips and snort them...whatever floats your boat!
The legality of jailbreaking has never been tested and apparently is only an issue in the US due to the DMCA. In that case it seems the DMCA is responsible for your loss of 'rights', not Apples' business model.
do THAT many people actually let kids, friends or random people even touch their computers
Yes...well maybe not random people, but kids and friends absolutely. I have since learned to set 'Airplane Mode' before I give my iPhone to my 3 year old.
I'm not sure I understand your definition of easy.

Well the thing is, right now it is just a big iPod touch. It runs the same OS and the same applications, uses the same input methods. It has a more powerful processor, bigger screen and better battery life.
That's not a bad thing and it implies none of the things you suggested. It has many uses I can think of and I'm sure many uses I haven't thought of yet.
Over the next 10 years this type of device is going to become the normal everyday device.
We won't know that for another 10 years...however in any case I think that the work Apple has done here will certainly influence the designs of future portable computing devices.

Asus T91 MT, Lenovo just released one as well. 9" and 10" screens, multitouch interfaces.
They both run Windows 7 which has quite an acceptable touch interface even for programs that were not made specifically for a touch interface.
There are many tablet computers available. I am typing this on an asus t91mt right now. Lenovo has just released one as well. Both are cheaper than an iPad.
I ordered my T91 right after Apple announced the iPad. I was hoping the iPad would be a tablet style macbooky type thing as opposed to a big iPod Touch. It wasn't what I hoped for so I bought one of the several alternatives that better suited my needs.
Fujitsu, Dell, xPlore make tablets that are significantly more powerful and thus more expensive.
There were several new tablets shown at CES this year that are likely to be already available, or available soon.
To say Apple has a monopoly on tablets is pure and utter nonsense.
Perhaps the term iPod sized used to mean something when there was only one size of iPod. Now, there is the old big one, the mini, the nano, the touch, the shuffle and perhaps more that I am missing.
The second guy deposits the cheque via photo...his bank goes to the bank the cheque is drawn on, and they see it has already been cashed. Guys account is debited the amount of the cheque within a couple of days. If it is a sufficiently large amount or not the first occurrence, an investigation will probably take place and the second guy (and maybe the first) will end up in front of a judge.
Even in the USA... how popular will this be, really?
Perhaps you and your friends don't get cheques often, but a lot of people do. I get cheques from my tenants every month. I have several friends who also own rental properties - they get a few cheques per month as well.
Those cheques are generally the only reason I have to go to the bank. If i paid $50 for an app for my phone to avoid those trips, it would be a bargain.
Other people that would like would be perhaps private daycare places - 8-10 cheques per month, people who provide music lessons, part time fitness consultants...the list goes on and on.
That manufacturing is a much smaller slice of the pie now than it used to be means that manufacturing growth, if it can be called as such, has been at a much slower pace than the rest of the economy.
That would only be true if there were no additional slices of the pie to account for the change in percentage. Instead of throwing out one statistic and trying to make reasonably intelligent people believe you, why not throw out some more - what are the percentages of other sectors of the economy? How much of the GDP was 'information technology' back in '53? How much was transportation?
Perhaps manufacturing has grown much less than other sectors, however you don't provide any data to make any sort of legitimate analysis.
great survey they did... talking to 100 game developers, half of whom had never developed a game before. And to top things off, their percentages add up to 90%...sounds like a real trustworthy analysis.
Also Google doesn't need anyone's ad API, they have their own, and a pretty capable too, thank you very much :-)
Apple just provides the API - it doesn't require anyone to use it...
(in Western culture)
I believe you just made his point...your western culture (of which religion is a part) says they are in different parts of the spectrum.
Compare suicide in Japanese culture vs western culture...
However, until you can insert your existing DVDs into an iPad and play them or Apple provides an alternative
I don't have an iPad, but wouldn't you just connect to the apple store and get whatever movie you'd like? Wouldn't that count as an alternative?
No, the parents are or they can take the risk of locking it out of sight such as in the trunk.
yes they can, and nobody is perfect and it seems the one time you are an imperfect human and forget to do so, is the one time that another imperfect human comes along and sneetches your stuff.
If our parents survived without in-car entertainment systems surely modern day parents can as well?
My great great grandparents survived without automobiles, electricity and many other things we have today. Should we do away with those as well?
The answer of course is yes we could survive without them, but why would we want to give them up?

You could say exactly the same things about Moms and cars.
So does that make the point more valid, or less valid?
Wow - I'm not sure what to make of this comment - I used to let people drive my corvette all the time.
I lent my 928 to a good friend's son to take his date to the prom.
And my sports bike? Only if I think you can handle it, but that includes a lot of people I know.

Dude, almost every GSM smartphone on the market is quad band/triple band UMTS
Dude...sorry can't use iPhone 3G on T-Mobile.
Can't use the Nokia N900 3G on AT&T.
The original Nexus One 3G can't be used on AT&T - they've just released a new version that will work on AT&T.
Perhaps if EVERY other smarthphone could be used on both it would be almost...but I doubt that's the case..
not quite how it works...

Writing out a cheque, then taking a photo of it? No. You're pulling my leg. And this is an advance?
No, not writing out a cheque and taking a photo of it.
Receiving a cheque from a third party, and depositing it via a photo.
For someone so high tech, you might want to work on your comprehension skills.

ReplayTV and Tivo were both introduced at CES in 1998.
Just wondering, what does displacement have to do with number of cylinders? What would happen if Audi developed a 2 litre V6? Holy Paradox, batman!
I still find it entertaining that my XR600R has a 600cc displacement and one cylinder, and my YZF600 has a 600cc displacement with 4 cylinders.
