  1. USB? on Judge Rules iDevice Speaker Docks Don't Infringe On Bose Patent · · Score: 1

So at issue is the external device, not the source, which is the 'MP3' player/function thingy. What would be at risk is any USB connected Audio device because USB is almost always associated with a computer. My guess is that this goes back to the Apple/Bose iSub days.

  2. It's an update to Lion, not a new OS version, and if your processor doesn't start with 'i' (i5 i7 etc) then don't bother. Apple sells hardware too, what did you expect? You need to factor in a touch mouse or pad to get the best out of it. If you don't like it? Win 8 is just around the corner!

It's a changing world, few people can expect a long career with the same company. prepare you yourself for the worst situation, live in a house that you can afford, not the house that you want. Give your kids a good education, not the best education. Be prepared to shift into a more stable job at the expense of salary. I'm 55, if I lose my job tomorrow then I'm out cutting lawns or doing part-time teaching(?). And if things don't go bad, then you are in a good position for retirement. Start planning for 65 now, not in 10 years time.

  12. tablet or smartphone on Ask Slashdot: Instead of a Laptop, a Tiny Computer and Projector? · · Score: 1

tiny projects are costly or have low resolution, or both. If you stay in nice hotels then there is a 'chance' that the TV take HDMI and some small PC-on-a-stick would do, but with some basic low cost tablets around it's hard to go past them if all that you need is some editing and browsing. Smartphones are OK to, just with smaller screens, or get a smartphone that can output video to a hotel HDTV.

The machine gets replaced when the Tax deductibility runs out, so long life is not an issue. Bah! just children looking for something to complain about.

I know that there is a difference, but buyers should beware, and copywriters should be aware of local conditions. Apple got extra time in the media, it's no big deal.

  25. contract time! on Ask Slashdot: How Long Should Devs Support Software Written For Clients? · · Score: 1

A clear contact would have made the question a lot simpler, in any job like this you ether hand over the finished 'work' with some sort of support statement. It may be just bug-fixes for a set period, or possibly a pay-as-you-go system, or a set support time frame. If you or your customer failed to include this in a contact, then I suggest that you gather all of your notes and emails relating to the job and look for a time where support was mentioned, and seek legal advice NOW!. A simple letter to the customer may sort this matter out, or you could be like a few companies and offer unlimited support for a fee, which grows and grows. You may also charge for after hours support, travel, extra penalties for problems caused by unauthorised/unsupported upgrades, etc.
