all this wireless internet business is overrated, so few people take advantage of it, look at the numbers from starbucks or McDs
You, my friend, are dead wrong. There are thounads of non-techies taking advantage of Wi-Fi access. They just don't want to get robbed a second time after paying 20 bucks for a latte*. They will chose to seek out free WiFi access when available.
I, for one, am having a ball using Verizon's free (for dsl and internet dialup customers) Wi-Fi service. The DSl bridges are in public payphones, so the the reception is great.
I especially like the last bit: 'One feels that this whole fiasco is the IT industry equivalent of a Nigerian scam or internet extortion ploy.' Oh yeah.."
It would almost be funny if this whole mess were not true. sigh
I am less concerned about the amount of stuff I can put on a hard-drive, and more concerned that the next time I boot up my computer, that stuff will still be there, as harddrives get more and more high-tech, the reliability seems to be taking a big nosedive, how will this effect the reliability of future drives?
So what your'e saying is: The size of your "hard drive" doesn't concern you. You just want it to be in prime working condition when you do need it?;)
IBM gets to stamp out big ugly boxes, because really, unless you're talking about a secretary, no one in the office ever says "That is a nice lookin' rack!"

I have a Radeon 8500 working with debian unstable right now.
I am in no way a Linux guru or even a programmer, but if you follow their directions, I got it working in 30 mins.
My distro was Debian testing, defore the Glib was upgraded, but I found out that when I apt-get'd to unstable, the drivers still worked fine.
Now your dilema is the glibc issue. What I would do in your shoes is, backup all your stuff, and install the current stable distro of Debian, which should have Glibc2.2. Add testing sources to your source list.
Apt get Xfree 4.2 (stable has 4.1 IIRC). Build the ATI modules as per the instructions above. Make sure Xfree is working, then you can apt get to Unstable.
Enjoy. 1. Use alien to convert the rpm. 2. Use dspk -i --force-overwrite to install the deb you just made. 3. Make sure you have your kenrel source. 4. You have to change the location of your kenel in the install script (so instead of/usr/src/linux like in redhat, it would be/usr/src/kernel-source-2.4.x) and save the file. 5.run the install script, it will make the modules for you. 6.use the ATI fglrconfig to make a XF86Config file for you. 7. startx
It worked the first time, once I realized it was looking for the the kernel source in the wrong place.
Reminds me of an interesting article I read about the bias that major news orginazations have towards firearms and self defense. Stories of legally armed citizens who have succesfully defended themselves (either by killing or maiming their attacker) are rarely ever printed or reported on.
It also points out once high profile case where an individual had gone on a shooting rampage on a university campus. Almost all news agencies repoted that the attacker was subdued by 2 students. The fact that both said students had gone to the parking lot to retrieve their legally owned firearms, and then confronted the suspect, who eventually surrenderd to these armed students, was conviently left out.
I work double shifts at 2 major hospitals as a New York City 911 paramedic. I love helping people, but my job is also very challenging. I love nothing more than to come home from a stressfull day on the "bus" and blow the living shit out of some meathead in Battlefiled 1942 or Raven Shield.
It relaxes me. Now does that mean I'm a ticking time bomb? I think not.
You're a (presumably) educated american, but if I were to start talking to you about "40/20s", "sets of six" and "dummy halves", you'd almost certainly be mystified.
"40/20s"=hip and waist size? "sets of six"=tight abs? "dummy halves"=twin blondes?
