Humans are not only destroying their planet, we're destroying our solar system!!1!11 If we act now we can stop heliosphere shrinking before it's too late!!!!!1
Our planet has been doing just fine with the energy the Sun is sending us for billions of years.
Are there any concerns about a wholesale switch to alternative energy, like wind, hydro, solar? We are taking energy from nature and using it in ways much different than what is was previously used for (heating the earth, keeping the clouds and rivers moving..)
Is there a chance we could cause some sort of global change, climate or otherwise?
Then again, I'm not a big believer in global warming, so I'll just tell myself to "stop worrying, we shouldn't be so conceded to think that we can affect the planet like that."
Do you really think it's in Microsoft's best interests to invest money in developing products for Linux or Mac, its competitors? Do you think a publicly traded company's shareholders would allow that?
What's with the +Funny mods for the responses to this post? Unless I locked my sense of humor in my car along with my keys this morning, I see no intent at humor in them. Is this some kind of mod prank? Protest? REVOLUTION?!??!
While I don't wholly disagree with your opinion, do you think your mother, who gave up her career for you, would be proud to hear you throwing vulgar stereotyping names towards vague groupings of people in an internet rant?
"fucktard feminists"?
You've either lived a very sheltered life, are very closed minded, or both. In upper-middle-class suburbia, I wholeheartedly agree with you. The kids are going to have shoes on their feet, food in their belly, and they'll get to college no matter what.
In lower income areas, however, many parents do give up their lives for their children, just not in the way you're looking for. Imagine: Both you and your spouse both work two "shitty ass jobs" and get 4 hours of sleep each night, and still get their kid to daycare, school, the doctor, etc. Many parents give up everything in an attempt to get their kids into college, and a good chance at a better life than they had. Isn't that the goal of all parents? Some don't start out with the financial stability that you enjoyed.
Calling for the sterilization of these people? Adolf, is that you?
It's called quality assurance. There needs to be someone in charge to avoid the scenario you describe: someone takes a buggy pre-alpha nightly, and distributes it as "Firefox 2.0".
That would obviously be devastating for the project. I'm glad Mozilla.org is in charge, albeit the only thing really preventing the previous scenario is community respect.
Am I the only geek who, for a split second, has a thought cross my brain like "What time did Mom say Thanksgiving dinner was? I'll just Google it. Oh, wait, I can't Google my brain. Doh!"

Just stopping and experiencing your food will make you eat less.
Especially if you eat at McDonalds and Taco Bell often.
"obvious"? "see immediately and without doubt"? "only possible reason"?
I disagree, and this "obviously" makes me a "completely worthless"/. reader. Ridiculous ultimatums aside, I personally think their motives are elsewhere: potential profit and avoiding legal battles.
You're dreaming. I doubt there are [m]any Active Directory shops out there who "need an alternate and opensource solution to Microsoft". Those who implemented Active Directory generally did so because they're mostly a Windows shop. Got Windows on the desktop, might as well pay the relatively insignificant fee to use Windows Servers and the free LDAP directory that comes with it. Don't delude yourself, AD, especially 2003, is rock solid. And you get easy, intuitive interfaces and "it just works" setup for the clients. And a huge installbase worldwide from which to glean information out of. And a company to call if you have problems, for-fee or "included" in another agreement. Microsoft Premier is amazing.
Don't get me wrong, if I were to run IT for an up-and-coming small company without a huge Windows client base, I'd certainly love to give Linux et al a shot. I use Samba at home, as the go-between my hobby Linux box and Windows PC's. Just don't be under the impression that big Windows shops are itching to switch to Linux. Some individual techs might, but the corporation will stick with what works, the big name they see in the CIO magazines, the company they can send a check to and get some accountability from.
I enjoy my music, whether on 128kbps mp3 or cd. Call it blissful ignorance.

Thank you, for some reason that struck me as totally hilarious.
*wipes tears out of eyes*
To clarify, to you blame Microsoft or Slashdot(etc) for this?
If you must compare the two, compare them by actual quality of product, usually as determined by market share.
..the great one..
Whoa, hold on there Pancho. By your logic, Microsoft Windows' market share makes it a higher quality product than... *bows head*
This is Slashdot! Sacrilege! Get the brooms!
[cliche]Don't forget about VHS vs BetaMax![/cliche]
Poor Linus, he must be working his fingers to the bone providing all the services that Unix computers were providing beforehand!
I hope Linus isn't free-as-in-beer.

It won't happen, and borders on absurd.

Open your mind a little.
Ha! I didn't really even think of that. I was just going for easy simple numbers.
Yeah, I wouldn't want to drink the same water that the sample group drinks!
Keep it around for September 19th!
Wow, yeah, someone doesn't remember much from Statistics 101, or didn't think through a very simple scenario:
IQ's of 5 people:
1, 1, 10, 10, 10
Ave: 6.4
The majority are above average.
..Would be less painful than listening to most of that "music"..
Probably more bleeding though.
I thought the same thing (web application) but with a different impression ("Whew! Google's smart, maybe they can keep my checkbook balanced!")

I wish my mod points hadn't gone away in the past few hours-- that was a very informative post.
I didn't know I needed that key-sequence until you mentioned it. Thanks.
No, you'll opt for whatever format wins.
Or maybe not.. Did you get Return of the King on betamax?
Mod parent +100 funny. Well done, sir.

+4 Funny? WTH, mods, there wasn't a joke in there. Insightful, I'd say.
