  1. This is a really really bad day for Linux on Red Hat Linux Support To End · · Score: 1

redhat has beena round for a long long time, sure they were everyone's favorite dist to talk shit about but only because they were the most popular and most proflific and represented the best chance at linux profitability, in fact this makes no sense whatsoever in light of hte fact not 3 weeks ago i was reading an article about hwo they had been turning a profit. But most damaging is that a lot of people pretty much thought RedHat was the only Linux contender with any chance against M$, and since they cameout against the SCO situation i'm wondering if any of those things were factors... anyway incoherent rambling, from a sleepless night in the new apartment so take it w/ a bowl of chronic and a shot of whiskey :p

code wasn't enough for you? They started out w/ a windows based system, if they're basically starting over i would assume it wouldn't be the easiest thing in the world to port all their existing thigns over, a few choice quotes

"The idea is for members of a platoon to be able to pass around battlefield procedural messages, graphics, alerts and other pieces of information that currently are communicated by hand signals and voice"

that seems to imply quite a bit of custom software
as does this: "The Land Warrior operates in a soldier-to-soldier wireless network, for short-range data and voice transmissions. For extended communications, the CDA is connected to a SINCGARS ASIP radio. Other radios may be incorporated in the future, such as the MBITR, the PRC-117F or L-band and Iridium satellite systems."

yea the mechanics might not be difficult to port over but what about all their GUI stuff? and/or having to write drivers for hardware that might not yet be supported etc? i mean it takes a pretty big investment to scrap it and start over... and switching operating systems midstream is very very telling.

I wonder if longhorn and winfx could have changed this (i doubt it).

Linux has several other better freer games available than AA; AA requires you to register with the army so they can send you spam and try to recruit you because that is the point of AA, in addition to making you slog your way through bootcamp and whatnot and not directly into the action which totally and completely cripples the idea of a fast loading easy playing game from a cd to test the power of a 64 bit processor w/ actual software. Where as you can get ET for free which also runs on linux... how much code re-write is necessary to take advantage of 64 bit? does it matter with something like these games? Although i'm not a fan of gentoo myself anyway when they released the disk that came with the unreal 2003 demo when it wa sbrand new i had ad isk of that handy... why team up w/ the army when all they want is to exploit the situation trying to get boys to play their game and like i well enough to do it for real.
