Canadian courts regularly ban the press. I for one don't disagree with this practice. Let the courts decide, there will be plenty of time for press when it's over. If there is the slightest perception of a problem with the press then shut them out.
A little faith in your justice system is a good thing.
I think that Windows is a pathetic piece of crap that makes a poor target for Linux to achieve. Linux would have to be seriously deteriorated to match Windows. Here's why:
Applications
All Office suites Suck. The Office suite was a marketing ploy by MS to crush Word Perfect and Lotus 123. While it worked it has meant that thousands of business computers everywhere are loaded with an expensive Office Suite that has to be there just to read the non-standard.doc format. While Excel, Powerpoint, and Accel lay dormant and unused. This is a rip off. Why isn't MS Office capable of generating Post Script? This makes it incapable of producing actual professional documents.
Training
Have you any idea how many thousands of workers use green screen serial terminals connected to Unix servers for their day to day work. I work in such an environment and watch many of my coworkers use them without a hitch, yet these same people get choked up when confronted with a GUI. Your figure of nearly 100% using Windows is incredibly innacurate.
Accountability
With Linux (or BSD) an IT department becomes accountable. They have all the source. They now have all the power. The only unfortunate thing is that they can no longer blame MS for problems.
I have watched many users of a variety of skill levels use Linux. As long as they can point, click and read they have no problems at all.
So my question is: Why in the hell would Linux want to be more like Windows, that would be a major step backwards.
Cars and Government regulations can perfectly demonstrate the quality of this idea. Recently I saw on TV a General Motors engineer who specialised in safety and who worked very closely with CART (the racing series). He said that he knows exactly how to build safer cars but that the design would violate all the Government regulations. It will take years to change these regulations so that he can save your life.
The point being that Government regulations can often be more hindrance than help.
I've watched more than one home user fuss over a.doc file and become extremely frustrated with it. Why? Their 'standard' is Works. My solution is to contact the sender and ask for the file to be sent in a standard file format such as html or text and tell them that they can just use 'save as' to access these standard formats.
This is an important point. Considering that they view Linux as the big threat in shops changing from legacy Unix systems, it would seem to me that retraining for Windows will be more necessary than retraining for Linux. This goes for both people and (porting) applications. I may be talking out my ass but it has got to be easier for a Unix shop to move to Linux than Windows.
We had better be vigilant and ready to call them on this when their reports say otherwise.
If your document is substantial and includes things like table of contents, index, bibliography, figure references, etc then you want (no, need) LyX.
Spell checker is faster and better. While running the spell check you can still edit the document underneath. If you enter a new word it will check it before going on.
LyX is a little different, it is not a word processor, but it may be the best kept secret in the software world. It will make you look like a genius. My kids use it for all of their heavier school assignments as the output is gorgeous and very consistent.
If you try LyX you won't use anything else for documents ever again.
Let's try to see this from Joe Blow user's perspective. He already thinks that his computer is hard to use, so if he hears that Linux is harder to use than Windows he will view learning Linux as an insurmountable task and will surely be disinclined to pursue such an endeavour.
I have introduced many of these users to Linux by telling them after that they weren't using Windows. They almost never notice. Unless I'm running Black Box which gets them all excited and they want to know how to make their desktop look like that.
The reality is that Joe Blow user just wants to use his computer. He doesn't care about Operating Systems. He doesn't even know what it is. He is usually lucky to know what a file is. (Hands up, everyone who knows a Windows user that can't do anything unless you make them a desktop shortcut.)
These same people have no problem using Linux once they learn how to log on. I had one of these users tell me that he thought my computer worked exactly how people expect their computer to work. It just works.
It is easy for some of us to get carried away about the finer points of Linux, like file permissions, or powerful command line utilities, but that just confuses them. Just boot it up, log them on and leave them alone. They will figure it out.
I agree with the original poster, only Excel has any value. With Linux I find I don't need Excel as Gnumeric is a great basic spreadsheet and I just use one of the many programming languages if I need more power. The problem with Excel is that too many see it as a platform for building applications (that suck) when they should have just used a real language to begin with.
Star Office sucks too. All Office suites suck. Small seperate apps that do a single job well is the only way to go.
When it comes to document sharing if you can't say it with plain old text then you obviously don't have much to say.
If you have two keys (PATS System) it is cheaper to get an additional key as you don't need a tech with a computer to program it. If I remember correctly take your two good keys and your newly cut key. Place a good key in the ignition, switch it on wait 3 seconds and quickly remove it and place the second good key in, turn it on, wait 3 seconds quickly change to the new key, turn it on wait 3 seconds and you should be good to go. It will likely cut the cost of the key in half.
Here in Canada many high schools have both Rugby and Football teams. I know many who played on both teams and to a man they all agree that football is the more dangerous of the two. Blocking, tackling at the knees or from behind are normal in football and forbidden in rugby.
Rugby is a very cool game. Rugby players are a very tough bunch of blokes, of that I have no doubt. But without equipment who would dive head first into someone's knees?
With Linux I can quickly and freely obtain a an OS that is current and will support my hardware. I don't know about you, but I prefer something coded in the last couple of months. I also really appreciate being able to compile a kernel specific to my hardware.
Chess is not a sport. Sports require motor skills. Chess does not. A game of chess can be played over the phone with the players describing their moves. Stephen Hawking could play chess.
The Olympics are a joke.
He claims that the most violent images he encounters are in books.
According to this lawsuit he should be screwed, but he is an honor student who is kind and gentle. How can this be?
The thing is that I know that there are more like him. Their existence disproves the premise of this case.
Should we keep all of our children in a glass case? Should we totally isolate them from reality?
It isn't possible to pinpoint what happens when someone snaps and trys to take people with them. It could range from incessant bullying to "I got shit on my fingers while wiping my ass" (sue toilet tissue manufacturers to make a wider product).
Unfortunately the reality in Columbine is that the teachers who did nothing about bullying, or took no notice of desperate behaviour in their students may be more responsible than anything else. Maybe someone should countersue these teacher's parents for failure to stop what should have been more obvious.
The U.S. desperately needs a law that would make plaintiffs in a lawsuit responsible for court and defense costs if they lose.
Don't worry. It was obvious.

Great, where can we get the source to this Outlook program? Hard to fix without that.

There is still a big difference between a free OS and a free OS.
Have you ever stuck your toe in water just to watch the ripples?
It seems that with digital and / or satellite services, everything is always on, at anytime, anyway.

Poor Joe. He's getting tired of bending over...but we tried to warn him...didn't we?
Okay, Joe...you asked for it...Here comes The Big One.
I sometimes wonder what Frank would say about all this crap.
He showed up once
That was often enough
