    BLASPHEMY!

Legend of Zelda is the goddamn Citizen Kane of videogames. The controls are blocky, but the limitations are part of the game. You'll notice that the bulk of the enemies only move in the four cardinal directions as well. And the rest of the game is just genius - it was groundbreaking in its scope and size. There was a huge overworld, nine dungeons, and innumerable secrets and tricks. And to think that it was programmed in a 32KB ROM!

OK, fine. If you actually go and look at this magically vanishing 10Q file whose disappearance is undoubtedly the work of sinister corporate executives, you'll notice that it's actually a filing for Ziff Davis Media. Ziff Davis Inc does not show up anywhere in the document. The text of the deleted document is identical to the text of the 10Q filed by Ziff Davis Media seven days later.

So either: 1) the Illumnati realized that there was incriminating evidence in the file and had it eliminated from the system (at least under the Ziff Davis Inc name) or 2) someone at the company or the SEC got confused and published the 10Q under the old Ziff Davis Inc name instead of the new Ziff Davis Media name and instead of filing a 10Q/A to pull the document, the SEC just moved it to the proper location a week later.

Well El Paranoido, I'm not sure why the daily index shows that the filing was made, given that Ziff Davis Inc ceased filing on 10-18-2000 after their acquisition by CNET. It's also unclear why they would have filed a 10Q in February, since they would have filed a 10K in late March given that their fiscal year ends in December. So I'm inclined to chalk that daily index file up to SEC incompetence.

The company that you're actually looking for (at least the one that's described in the article) is Ziff Davis Media, and they filed a 10Q on Feb 23, 2001.

Actually I think Tracey Ullman ran for 3-4 seasons on Fox late on Sunday (and I have some memory of it being an occasional series on HBO before that) so it must have had a little bit of staying power.

And my memory is of the Simpsons is that they ran on Thursday at 8, against they still-strong Cosby show for their first few seasons. The fact that they did OK there, along with the success of MwC kept the Fox network alive.

I've got to put in a vote here for the Slik Stik. (I think by SunCom). That little sucker had the best control - mostly due to the tactile response when you moved the stick in a given direction. Also, you didn't grip the stick - just the ball at the top, which improved your precision. They weren't the sturdiest things ever, lasting maybe 2-3 years of heavy use before the button started to get unresponsive, but they were only like $6.95 so it wasn't a big deal to get another one. I always hated using Apple and IBM joysticks that were humongous, heavy, expensive, and felt like you needed to move them a foot to get them to respond. That sort of analog control is only useful for simulator games - when I'm running from the red ghost in Pac-Man, I don't want to be bothered with hauling the stick around, I need immediate responsiveness!

  23. Re:Sword of the Samurai on Old Games that are Still Alive and Kickin'? · · Score: 1

What is it about this game that makes me love it so damn much 12 years after I first got it? I guess part of it is that it's so open-ended; you're never driven from one place to another, and while you can react to events that happen, you can also make a number of those events happen. There's a real sense of a living world, as the computer players form and break alliances, betray each other, etc. even if you just sit at home. There's just enough in terms of the events that lets you spin a story around it for yourself. And the action, especially the multiple-enemies fights, was great for the time and still holds up today in terms of excitement and challenge. Even 12 years later, I take a deep breath before I raid the bandit fortress to rescue a relative. Microprose's team also did a great job with the sound and graphics polish, giving an excellent "far east" flavor to the game (the "pause for loading" quotes were especially clever). The one thing about the game that I never liked was the army battle sequences - I always hated that there was no mouse support, since the keyboard is so clumsy there, and I never had much success in using any sort of "strategery" there. Still a fantastic game, overall.

I'm not sure what definitions you're working with, but in the US at least, cashflow refers to the cash profit produced after all operating expenses but before interest and taxes. It's basically one measure of profitability. You are correct that operations that have a lot of revenue have the opportunity to manage into a substantial negative working capital position by lowering their accounts receivable and inventory and stretching their payables, but I don't think that airlines can typically do that, since they need to carry a pretty good inventory of parts, and their two main costs, fuel and labor, can't be stretched that far.
