    I read the article and it seems more like a linux strengths, windows weakness type of article. I suspect he went through securityfocus advisories, located the major culprits in windows security vulnerabilities and then came up with his os analysis. I was hoping someone more educated in the operating system development/design field had come up with this analysis.

    There are so many games out there that if you don't hype you won't recover the cost of making your games. For consumers simple ways to avoid buying crappy games. Play the demo and read the reviews. Don't just walk into the store and buy anything with a nice picture on the box

    after taking software engineering, it seems everyone feels the need to write a book about the best way to develop software. What about all the other previous ways? They aren't valid anymore? were they ever valid in the first place? is this *new* way to develop software more valid than the rest?

    think about it. Why would you destroy something that has succesfully made your company billions (even trillions) of dollars so you can do something new? Didn't IBM come crashing down before it changed? Didn't apple hit a new low before it innovated? Companies don't change what they do until what they do causes their demise, and until that happens Microsoft isn't going to be changing anything.

    because it would look sort of silly asking a 30 year old to show you an ID to obtain a game. Shouldn't they do it like they way they do cigar purchases? if the selling thinks you're too young he asks for an id.

    hit me with a clue bat if they already mentioned it in the article. I'm just following the long established slashdot tradition of mouthing off without reading first.

    you see something idiotic like "tabbed browsing" should never be patentable. There were already software that displayed multiple pages where you switched with "tabs" long before it became the fad in webbrowsers.

    IE is full of holes. Everyone needs to be aware of this including MS lovers and windows users. Frankly I'm a bit surprised at microsoft for letting one of their major projects just rot like that. IE is dragging microsofts reputation down the toilet with it (I know there is not much left), but this particular software is the largest single source of bad publicity for the company as a whole and nobody at ms seems to give a shit

    it is all a conspiracy to undermine the profession. Everyone benefits except the programmer. Well some suggest he should do support but what if he's not good at support? Lets say programmer X writes open source software and offers support. Company B with a bigger staff also starts offering support. Not only did he write the software for free, he can't even compete in the support department. And then they are others who say well people who write open source already have jobs anyways, that's true too.

    hrm being a developer who has used gdi+ before, it is not only for viewing jpegs. It does have a jpeg/gif etc viewing component to it. So just because an application uses gdiplus does not make it vulnerable. Picture viewers that depend on gdiplus (probably the built in one in winxp, word and other viewers that rely on gdiplus for jpeg viewing are vulnerable)

    I'm also curious to know if this virus works on winxp sp2. Wasn't all the fuss about sp2 the NX flag to prevent executions in case of buffer overflows?

    Or does this virus only target the unclean?

    I had a conversation once (I'm not sure where) which I mentioned that I drove a durango because I had a large member. And some fool countered by saying some people like to compensate in the other direction and he drives a mini. What man with a ridicilously large member would drive a mini? I can't imagine a real man doing that.

    I suspect he was a female and knew nothing about men.

    edonkey has an interesting race to the bottom characteristic. If you give it all your bandwidth you will end up sharing 5-10 times the size you originally intended to download. So any emule user with a clue will cap his upload bandwidth, which makes everyone else slow. Edonkey may be the place to find stuff, but it's not the place to download large binaries.

    Am I the only one who thinks the whole thing is a dumb idea and a waste of resources? Why build a space elevator when you can just fly there. The more time you spend on learning to fly in space the better the technology gets. I keep thinking some alien is going to show up laughing at all those elevators sticking out from the earth. It's dumb like using wooden wheels

    This might be because winxp is a workstation os while w2000 has a server version. Any company that wants to seriously run servers are stuck to win2000 or win2003. But then again if all your workstations are running XP and your servers are running 2k it only make sense that the workstations will be rebooted more often.

    why don't you just NOT use IE.. hmmm? I mean not only will you not get any malware to deal with you won't have to pay to be a premium member to get bug reports too! sounds like a great deal to me.

    nobody watches or reads science fiction to learn about the future. Science Fiction is usually a present day story told in the future. Good and bad sci-fi movies totally depend on how well it is told. Take minority report for example. Even non sci-fi fans enjoyed this movie not because of the sci-fi elements but because it was a good story. Compare that to a movie like "The Red Planet" another boring space movie that brings out the yawns. Unforunately critics tend to bitch about the technology in bad scifi movies that the actual story itself.

    Sci-fi isn't dead, good sci-fi authors are dead (or not born yet)
