It makes me cringe to see the way that some people communicate.

If you study other languages, you can see that english has some real problems. Ever since the great vowel shift, our spelling hasn't matched our pronunciation. I would love to see english speakers suddenly switch one day to a new, cleaner spelling/grammar/conjugation model. I think we could fix the language and still make it sort of understandable to people during the transition.

I remember reading an article about amish woodworkers and how they use power tools. When they get a large jointer or planer or something, they remove the electric motors and replace them with air powered motors. Then they have a large diesel engine that provides air pressure to drive the motors. The cool thing about this is that turning a valve allows them to control the speed of the motor. It's like getting variable speed for free. That usually requires 3-phase power.

Why not just put a fraud alert on everyone's credit reports and let's get it over with. You want to apply for credit? You'll have to jump through a few more hoops...

The system as it is now is painfully broken.

You have no idea. I had a near miss with identity theft. We caught it by accident. And we're still not safe. We put fraud alerts on all three credit reports. It's been four years now. And to date, the only time I've ever noticed a difference is when I was applying for a home depot card. The person at the service desk put me on the phone with someone who simply said, "Do you know why I'm taking to you?" I mentioned the fraud alert an d no additional information! and was given the card on the spot. There were countless other times when the credit went through like the fraud alerts weren't there at all. We got a target card with a $10,000 limit for example. No questions asked. We bought cars also... nothing. Last time we checked, the fraud alerts were still there. Yeah, I'd say the system is broken.

These are two very different cases. The term "identity theft" was coined because it's a complicated concept that needed a name. In identity theft, your identity wasn't really stolen. Your information was used to commit fraud. The act of appropriating your information may or may not have been illegal, and may or may not have been copyright infringement. The real problem is when that information is used. That's a separate act/crime/offence from actually obtaining the information. How can you use a downloaded mp3 to commit fraud?

Because businesses learned that they can exploit women just as much as men to make money during WWII, it changed our family structure forever.

Funny, I've always blamed the destruction of the american family on the greed of the me-first boomer generation. The economy revolved around the fact that only one person in a family worked. Therefore, if an average guy was going to buy a home, it was designed to be affordable ona single income. People had a certain amount of money. Then boomers discovered that they could have fat lifestyles if they both worked. Fuck their children, put them in daycare. So they were two income families living in one income economies. Then people had more disposable income, which created an upward pressure on housing prices, and really, everything else. Now, two incomes is required to maintain the same standard of living that our grandparents had. And now that the boomers are running corporate america, fuck the workers. As long as I get my bonus and my stocks go up half a tick. So much for job security.
