Mark my words. This feature will cook for a while, say three to six months, then huge numbers of people will get their tivo service switched off one day. How? I bet the recordings are watermarked when they transfer. So anything uploaded to a p2p network can be traced back to the original person. And I bet this is the price paid by tivo to allow this service.

The diamond industry works entirely off of the perception in most people that diamonds are rare.

I heard a story about how Russia had been stockpiling large quantities of high grade (natural) diamonds from their own mines. They went to DeBeers and invited them to buy their stock to prevent Russia from dumping them on the diamond market. DeBeers happily bought their entire stock at a excellent (for russia) price. How's that for limiting supply? :-)

Our naturally windy environment is being destroyed by people selfishly extracting wind energy from our atmosphere! Wind is a natural force that moves clouds around and keeps our weather going. Everyone knows that windmills extract this much-needed power from our air. If we extract all the wind energy from our atmosphere, imagine the horrible consequences! Clouds would stop moving causing torrential rain on only one spot while causing severe droughts across the street! Countless yachts would be forced to use fossil fuels instead of sailing! And the multi-million dollar wind surfing and kite flying industries would be devastated! Please, stop harvesting wind energy from our atmosphere!

  17. Re:Contracting has a lot of cons - beware. on Switching to Contracting? · · Score: 1

Not to mention most contractors are paid on schedule 1099 which is taxed at a rate of your income tax level + 14%. BRUTAL

Actually, most contractors are either corp to corp or w2 and almost all go through a middleman because of the preferred vendor situation. And that 14%? It's really 15% and you're paying half of that right now as a salaried employee. Your employer is paying the other half of it. This is why you should encorporate.

  18. Re:Contracting has a lot of cons - beware. on Switching to Contracting? · · Score: 1

I've been a conpontractor for most of my 14 years in IT.

    1. Incorporate yourself into a company

Absolutely, but mostly for tax reasons. If you really get into trouble, it's not hard to pierce your corporation when you're the only employee.

    2. Insurance
Many companies require Professional Indemnity & Public Liability insurance. For the young & inexpirienced, this can be very expensive - recent PI insurance for us was more than $6000

For me, this was several hundred dollars a year for $1,000,000 in coverage. It's a trivial.

    3. Training
Once you're a contractor, you are generally responsible for paying all your own (re)training costs. In the short term this mightn't be an issue but it is something that should be considered nonetheless

You'll find that you only need more training if you want to head in a new direction. Also, I've been offered paid training as a salaried employee countless times, but never received it. There's always an excuse. And often, the training leaves a lot to be desired. As a consultant, you'll make enough to easily take a month off and pay a 5 digit number for that cool teradata (or whatever) training. Don't hold your breath waiting for an employer to pay for it unless there's a real, immediate, and urgent need, which is unlikely since they can just hire a consultant.

    4. Working Harder
You will work harder as a contractor. Seriously. Because contract rates are more expensive and generally because you work on specific tasks (ie write system X), you MUST show a positive return on investment.

I've always had to work harder as a salaried employee. Consultants are respected and treated differently by companies. Salaried employees are there to be abused. For some reason, consultants avoid this. And if you do work longer hours, you're paid for them.

    5. No real job security
Everytime you a contract finishes it's like a job interview all over again - sometimes you could go without another contract that suits your skills/needs for extended periods. which leads me to this point...

Job security is an illusion anyway. I've come into work and had my job evaporate on the spot maybe half a dozen times in my career. That is what made me go into consulting in the first place. At least I know when the end is. And you do get real good at interviewing. It's part of the job. I know people who were out of work for 9 months in 2000. If you add up all the time I was out of work over the last four years, it's about six weeks. When the economy is not horrible, it's not hard to get a new contract.

    6. CASH FLOW
If you ignore everything else in this message, at least take note of this: You may not have a regular income. Cashflow management is essential.

But that's true with any job.

You need to make sure that you've got at least 1 months salary set asside in the bank for times between projects, times when your payments are late because you submitted timesheet too late/nobody authorized your payment, etc. IT HAPPENS. Don't get caught short.

1 month is nowhere near enough. In 2000, I worked my finances so that I could take a 50% pay cut and still pay my bills. I went from $125/hr to $45/hr almost overnight. I survived, but only because I had $20,000 in the bank. Again, this is true whether you're a contractor or a salaried employee. And billing problems will only hurt you if you're paycheck to paycheck.

I can honestly say that being a FTE provides the greatest of securities... it is easier to let contractors go than FTE's.

You're dreaming. Aside from maybe government jobs, job security is an illusion. And since most states are right-to-work states, you can be out on the street before the end of today with no explanation. At least with consulting, you make the money you're really worth and can afford to have some cash in the bank.
