I think your neighbours would probably make it even more impossible by killing you as soon as they found out what your intentions would to do to their property valuations.
My wife and I got swatted by our home owner's association for... (insert drum roll).. Parking in our driveway. It seems we're required to park in our garage unless the vehicle won't fit. Since then we've been looking for creative ways to piss off our neighbors while still following the rules. I have a rusty '91 van that I parked directly in front of the main offender's house in one of the approved parking spaces. Now they see it when they look our their window. I could get this train car and park it in my driveway. I'm certain that it won't fit in my garage.
Downloading music from p2p is a lot like masturbation. Regardless of what my mother said, I still haven't gone blind and I have no hair on my palms. Most soccer moms are clueless what their 12 year old does with their computer. I'm sure the same soccer mom who says not to use gnutella (can anyone name a single soccer mom who's even heard of gnutella?) would be horrified by their son's porn collection. I doubt this tactic is purely psychological because its effects would be minor if not insigificant and almost certainly temporary. I think they'll trojan the network. I can see them finding a buffer overflow in winamp or media player and doing fun stuff with that. I'm sure they're after the psychological affect also. But it doesn't matter. It's a losing battle either way.
I first read that as "The Matrix is a sci-fi John Holmes movie." That would be much more interesting. Can you imagine the money shot in bullet time? The asian girl who's obviously doing it for the money does the bullet dodging agent move to avoid getting it in the eye.
John: How did you do that? I've never seen anyone move that fast before.
Yeah, he just doesn't know what he's talking about. I spent three years in Tokyo and I can say that the comic book scene there is totally different from here. Imagine weekly comic books that are 8.5" x 11" and two inches thick. These are definitely designed for adults. Many have adult themes including nudity and sexuality. And no one would think twice about an adult reading one of these on the train.
Suppose using your analogy, you aren't really paid directly by the sale of your books. Suppose there's a huge middle man who takes 99% of the profit from your books and pays you the difference, which allows you to break even or even lose money after the middle man charges you for paper, binding, and marketing fees. Are they stealing from you, the author? Or are they stealing from the middle man?... the same middle man who forced you into a deal with the devil to sell your book because that middle man has grown so large that they can wipe out any competition that would give you a better deal?
Like most things in life, this isn't black or white. This is a shade of grey. I'm in the process of replacing, through peer to peer downloads, all of the music I listed to in high school. It was all on cassette tape. They're all long gone now, all destroyed or lost one way or another. I also lost a significant number of CDs in a move. If I replace all of them with peer to peer, is that theft? I paid for them all. How many times do I have to pay before it's not theft anymore?
The "game over" is in the next generation wireless.
I have wireless broadband. (CO is too far and the cable company has brain damage) $65 a month, $300 install fee for the antenna on the roof. They claim it's 10megabit, but I haven't seen that speed. It is fast though. It seems as though I'm no longer the bottleneck. IIRC, I was getting around 350K a second with bittorrent. I can get about 80k a second on winmx and that's with a lot of other transmissions going. Ping times from chicago to yahoo are 20-30ms. It's noticably faster than my connection at work. It's ultra stable. I've had it for about six months and it's gone down twice that I know of. It's symmetrical. No caps. No static ip though and no hosting servers.
If we have binary emulation of windows apps more people will use linux
That's the thing. I think linux will eventually be viewed as windows compatible, but the choice for power users. Some people will switch to it to be cool. But when microsoft adds drm, you can bet people will jump ship in a hurry if linux is a viable alternative at that time. Then I think we'll see microsoft's true colors. Windows isn't done till linux doesn't run. The barometer will be directx. When game companies start to resist the move to new versions of directx (that contain linux time bombs) we'll know we've won.
This reminds me of my favorite far side. There were a bunch of indians standing around looking at one in the middle. The indian in the middle was holding a book titled "101 Rain Dances". Instead of rain drops, it was raining hand-crank egg beaters. The caption said, "Oh, one step to the left, then two to the right. What kind of dance was I doing?"
Isn't that sort of the way business has been done for a million years now?
Yes.
It's not like the auto industry hasn't been doing this for years by building plants in other countries to take advantage of their cheap labor.
It's exactly the same thing. Except that now it's white collar jobs that are leaving. A better analogy would be like Ford firing all the factory workers and importing Mexicans to have them work in factories here, but paying them half. They can't do that though. It's illegal. They don't have an h1-b program because anyone can be trained to be an auto worker. So they moved the factories elsewhere. Ultimately, that's what will happen to IT. So it's a losing battle. I plan to get out of IT.
Unfortunately, IT workers don't have a labor union or trade organization to defend us. Doctors are numerous all over the world. Why don't they come here and charge half? Because of the AMA. It's extremely difficult to get your medical training in another country, then come here and practise medicine. IT workers require no licensing, have no organization, and can be trained anywhere. Hindsight is 20/20. It was sort of inevitable.
I have to wonder if the USian labor force isn't partly to blame by pricing themselves out of the market.
This is more like shit happens. IT workers don't set the rates. Wouldn't they make it higher now if they could? The rates are set by the market.
Just screw it in place
This sounds dangerous. You should warn people. If someone mistakes this for the wrong kind of pussy, it could be an electrifying experience.
oh, wait. This is slashdot...

No, it's because there are 6.02 x 10^23 developers working on the system at any one time.

And what is an illegal file type anyways?
It's a file with the evil bit set.
The Matrix is a sci-fi John Hughes movie
I first read that as "The Matrix is a sci-fi John Holmes movie." That would be much more interesting. Can you imagine the money shot in bullet time? The asian girl who's obviously doing it for the money does the bullet dodging agent move to avoid getting it in the eye.
John: How did you do that? I've never seen anyone move that fast before.
Asian girl: It wasn't fast enough. (wipes eyes)
I think I better stop now.
How would it BSOD?
You've solved the riddle! After all these years, the blue screens were being caused by the Tidy-Bowl Man!
Faster than...
...an Indian being interviewed for a low paying IT job.
Anybody else expecting the phrase 'with wings' to appear in that one?
Haha! I keep asking my wife when someone will produce maxi pads with handle bars.
Of course, my wife uses maxi pads to stop my own form of Pop-Up Advertisement.
Uh, no. You're just being a retard.

You get ALL of your income from selling books.

Isn't there something inherently wrong with Slashdotting a webserver of the Church?
I'm wondering just what goes on at this church. My employer's proxy is blocking the site!
The reason it has been able to work well is that it receives acts in a vaccuum.
And I thought my volkswagen was small!
This will kick open the doors for plenty of old-school D&D action!
Just cast MIBL it works on any kind of foe. Of course, with the way the wife is looking these days, maybe OLAY is better.
If you got this joke, you're not only a geek, you're old. Now where's my fire horn?
Unmarried huh? You almost got it.
What she says:
1. How do we ditch the kids?
2. Why do you pay more attention to your buddies than me?
3. Why do you pay more attention to that computer than me?
4. Do you think that woman's attractive?
5. I can pay $100 for a new purse, but you can't pay $49.95 for a new game (see #3)
6. You don't care about my feelings.
7. You're not sensitive to my needs.
8. Why don't you do something constructive.
9. Rub my feet.
10. Do we have to do that again? Why can't we just cuddle?
What I say:
1. How do we ditch the kids?
2. Would you please stop grooming me!
3. Would you please stop parking in the dead center of the garage!
4. Would you please stop falling asleep in the dead center of the bed!
5. Not everything is cooked on 10.
6. For the last time, here's how to use the tivo.

...and you tried to get her backed into a corner so the camera would focus in on her wonderful coneshaped cleavage?
That's nothing like the girls in Ready to Rumble. They should have changed the name to Ready to Jiggle.
Go diva! Go diva!

So when my computer boots, will it finally do a level 3 diagnostic to check for tachyon emissions? That fixes everything!
Will, are you listening?
Must be doing something wrong..

We've been hearing about the advantages of blue light for seemingly years now.
You can say that again! K-Mart rocks! I just can't resist those blue light specials.
Could they have jam-packed ONE more area of technology into this box?
I bet it doesn't have deodorant.
I wonder if this will be available outside of India? It sounds like a cool device to have!
Not for me. If it's from India, I won't buy it. I'm tired of sending money to India.
Is this illegal?
Yes.

Even install a web cam inside it.
At last! We'll finally solve the mystery of whether the little light stays on!
