Very much agree here. So many assumptions are made about "life" and what is required for it.. oxygen, water, 'organic' molecules. That is life ON EARTH, and the only form we understand to date. Without even being able to define "life" with any certainty, how on Earth can we pretend to know what form it can take or under what conditions it must exist? More assumptions are made that any life that forms MUST progress to a technological civilization, feel the need to expand and consume more and more resources, be potentially aggressive and/or hostile, and have similar desires and egos. In other words, we create them in our own image. Very short sighted.
What do we do? I'm getting just what they said -- about 50 emails since they started last night. I can't even get to bluesecurity.com to unsubscribe if I wanted to. I can handle 50 or so I suppose and want to continue to support BS (hmmm...) but what would you do?
I think it's safe to say 'yes' to that. When humans worldwide numbered only in the tens of thousands, they existed in small family-oriented units, hunting and gathering. They sought what they needed on their own. Barter/exchange only started making sense when individuals had abilities that others lacked (forging metal, maybe) and spent their time doing these tasks instead of hunting and gathering.
You are trying to scientifically analyze God using the realm of standard space-time. Isn't it possible that God exists outside our universe, or perhaps our universe is a cross section of a multi-dimensional superspace? What if matter has properties that manifest only outside our 4-dimensional (or if you prefer string theory, 11-dimensional) space? What if there are energies that travel multi-dimensionally but are virtually undetectable in our puny universe?
If you can accept that there may be more physical, temporal, and maybe other unknown dimensions, you should accept that we may be incapable of describing (or even comprehending) them because of the limitation of our senses.
I also disagree with your claim that matter is 'simple.' Just because you can count the number of properties on your hand? Each particle has forces associated with it that we've identified, but can give no good explanation for how they do what they do or how they were 'assigned' to the particle. I don't know about you, but I couldn't make a particle myself. Not that easy.
However, if you were to go along with your argument that simple things can just be, but complex things cannot (such as God), could there not be an undetected non-matter particle, say a "Theon", that is simple, like matter, has some forces, and when lots of them come together, abiding by simple rules, can form a complex entity, such as a God?
Not trying to claim that any of this accurate, but it's a worthy mind exercise.
At the risk of being flamed out of existence, I simply have to ask (as one of those 'outraged "intellectuals"'), why you believe Bush is the best person to be running this country? Not why Kerry, Nader or any other candidate is bad, but why is Bush good? What has he done for you, or offered to do for you over the next four years?
Not a troll... I just haven't seen anything positive about Bush listed here (or honestly anywhere other than obvious propoganda sites).
you can get the SL-C860 from brando.com.hk in Hong Kong, but it comes set up for Japanese. There are sites to help you convert it to English. Or, order it from dynamism.com and while there check out the new SL-C3000. Of course, eBay is your friend...
My understanding (and quick Google search) is that an application server is just that: a server that runs dynamic applications (as opposed to just static HTML). Tomcat definitely runs applications (aka servlets), just not EJB applications (natively). Apache+PHP/Perl/[scripting engine] qualify as application servers as well. It may be better to refer to JBoss/Resin as EJB application servers, or EJB containers. But Resin is so dirt simple to install and use as a plain application server* that it competes with Tomcat at that level.
* I last used Resin in it's 2.0.x era. Not sure about 3.x
I had one of these. Very slow; buggy OS; serial connectivity only (so running terminal meant going through a host machine). Nowhere near anyone's wish list listed so far.
1 GHz Pentium != 1 GHz Pentium M != 1 GHz PowerPC G4. Integer, FP, cache, power consumption are all different and affect final perceived performance. So 1.25/1.25 is not always 1.
Well, I was going to point you toward this, but it's really designed for small devices like the Zaurus. And having tried both Qtopia and X11 on the Zaurus (default Sharp ROM vs pdaXrom), I have to admit that X11 is snappier and is the one I'm using now.
Given some incentive though, I think the chaps at Trolltech could smooth out the wrinkles.
I admit I was thinking in terms of home PC OS, but was wondering if Microsoft's decision to not name the successor to Windows 3.11 as Windows 4, but instead to go with dated versions (Windows 95), was in any way related to the apparent version 4 curse.

How far does the magnetic field need to go? You have blood vessels 1/16" from your skin surface. And perhaps the body generates an energy field itself that we haven't measured yet that the magnet may affect. The human body is extremely complex and continues to stump the most studied physicians. Calling them 'bunk' because they didn't work on you personally is hardly a valid study.
that's actually a good business opportunity.. think about it... No reason US law can't be taught outside the US; many activities can take place via videoconference and electronic correspondence. Even if a case goes to trial and you need the lawyer in person, the airfare would be cheaper than the hourly rate of a US lawyer. Hmmm.....
Wawa is a chain of convenience stores in our area. They started out small enough but kept growing and pushing other stores out. They are almost as prolific in our area as Starbucks. They've done well enough that instead of merely having the corner store in a strip mall, they are free standing stores, many now with they're own brand of gasoline and pumps, and keep our area fully caffeinated (they are THE place to get your coffee in the morning)
I've heard rumors that the store is named after a native American word for a type of waterfowl. Can't prove that.

The word "untipoverable" is thrown around a lot these days...

If you push something hard enough, it will fall over.
Chalk it up as yet another product whose fourth version was bloated and disappointing.
Think DOS 4, Netscape 4, IE 4... any others?
Interesting how Windows skipped version 4...
Now you can have the same fun in Java with the C-Memory Management Nostalgia Library 1.0! It's easy:
A X_SIZE);r p = mem.getPointer();
Memory mem = new Memory(System.HEAP);
mem.malloc(Memory.SEGMENT_M
mem.setMemoryProtection(false);
Pointe
for(;;) {
p.setValue(0x00);
p.increment;
}
Go nutz!
