  3. Its all been said before, but... on AOL Sues Spammers · · Score: 2, Interesting

in case it hasn't sunk in, and I think that is the case with some people, outside slashdot especially,

The spammers do not have the inalienable right to "send you every piece of garbage they want to", they have the right to voice their opinions or beliefs. In other words anyone out there can feel free to post, publish and advertise all the male enhancement and university diploma ads they would like to on their own website, but they have no right in the least to send those my way to waste my time and resources.

This is clearly analogous to the fax laws that were posted here a while ago that, in short, state you will be financially held responsible for the time and resources consumed from sending unsolicited faxes. Spam is in no way different whatsoever.

  4. Potential for problems.... on SuSE 8.2 Announced · · Score: 1

I see lots of potential problems with this. Yes they have put hard work into their tools and distro, but there is a fine line between making sure you don't get out right robbed by everyone taking advantage of your work, and benefiting out of the much harder work of countless people, who have poured so much into what amounts to the largest part of your product(linux kernel, the desktops, and almost all your apps).
I don't necessarily think Suse has crossed the line but then again getting robbed of their hard work hasn't come close to happening, take Redhat as indication as well, and of course the business with the iso's and non-copyleft software and their attitude in general to giving back in some areas seems to lean in the wrong direction.

Maybe we have just come to expect getting everything for free when it comes to linux, but then again why shouldn't we? The truth is this was all started and grown out of our hard work, it wasn't meant to be popular or successfull even, but it was always about utter openness and complete sharing. If this makes it difficult and unrealistic for business, all the better I say, it was never intended for that.

  5. This "autosizing" will not help you on Mozilla.org Launches Mozilla 1.3 · · Score: 1

I have the same issue and precisely in releation to web comics as well. Unfortunately all the autosizing feature does is shrink images that are too large and only when you are viewing an image, and not pages with images.

That being said, I have utterly despised the IE autoresize (I was forced to use IE and leave the feature on for a while) but I actually have it on for the time being in mozilla for the sole reason that I can quickly switch off and on the resizing by simply clicking on the picture where as in IE you would have to hover for quite a few seconds until a toolbar appears and then click a button in there.

For now the cl tools are still available but if ms acquires borland I'm willing to wager (in regard to ms's track record) that they will be halted, and no $100 isn't that a big deal for me and you and but I was reffering to people getting started and interested in programming. The younger kids that start out messing with software development early are the ones that contribute to tomorrows quality software and a lack of good free compilers means that many of them won't ever get into it.

  9. Bad day for small MS/windows developers on Microsoft to Buy Rational and/or Borland? · · Score: 1

All I can say is that this awful news to anyone who writes small custom software and makes do with the Borland's "free command line tools" c++ compiler. In my opinion, the true beauty of nix systems is their central, readily available (read free), high quality compilers that allow people who can't/won't shell out massive bucks for MS visual c to get started in the programming world. Borland's command line tools is the closest equivalent to this on windows platforms. It is already close to impossible to find Borland versions of libraries for many things. Oh well I guess I'll have to make a move to mingw/cygwin as my development environment.

  10. New Twist, Old Idea on Motorcyclists To Get Wearable Airbags · · Score: 1

Everyone seems to be focusing on wether the vest itself is of any use, but the fact is the inflatable vest idea is old (and probably proven?). The tech advancement is using a wireless deployment transmitter/reciever, "Previous motorcycle airbags used a ripcord that could accidentally inflate the bag" -pop-sci article. The image of biker with a ripcord to his accidently inflated vest riding down the freeway is pretty hillarious though.
