It's a move intended to create a foothold in a market by undercutting competition.
Dear god. They are helping poor schools. What competition is there to undercut? Anyone can GIVE money/computers/software/twinkies/milk to these schools. No one is stopping them. This would be different if it wasn't for education. Leave MS alone for this.
When was the last time you met a grade school kid who knew how to use Linux? Or a teacher for that matter?
These are your AVERAGE, EVERYDAY Americans. Linux is complicated compared to Windows. I'm sorry, but it is. So after figuring in the time, and effort to TEACH people how to use/teach others how to use the computers AND the money to hire someone who knows how to maintain the machines, the answer is MS because its the better solution.
And that argument about another generation of people using MS is such crap. You wan this to stop? Then these linux companies need to step up and make the OS dirt simple to use, set up, configure, and maintain. And the developers need to do the same thing. The avg. person is not a computer geek like you and me, but intimidated, lazy, uncaring, or confused when it comes to using computers.
Oh yea, don't knock anything that goes to education. That is one of the most important things in the world. So don't knock anyone or any corp. that helps it out.
Its so true. I can't believe people are actually dissing MS for this. THEY ARE HELPING POOR SCHOOLS!!!!!!!! Jesus. When was the last time Red Hat or Mandrake gave 1.1 billion dollars worth of stuff away? Um, never...you need to make money first...and to do that your product needs to be main stream, easy to use, functional, and very user friendly...and well, linux is none of that.
Anyhoo, leave MS alone for this. Just sit back, mastrabate over the newest release of the Red Hat kernel, and go back to MS bashing tomorrow. Helping kids = good, no matter what company is doing the helping.
Why is everyone bitching about this? Everything has security holes. My server (and my friends server for that matter) gets hacked like every 6 months or so. What a pain in my ass. Is it cuz everything is open sorced about it? Who knows. Just don't be so hippocritical about it. There are just as many issues with Linux as there is with Windows. The only difference is that Microsoft is the big huge successful business, so it gets bitched at.
I wonder how things would be if Linux was the main stream and windows wasn't...
Now don't get me wrong. I'm not a MS fan at all. I just hate people who are so whiny and don't like looking at the big picture and end up being hippocritical about it.
The company that makes your car can choose to have a recall or not. We've all seen fight club. What Ed Norton says on the plane is really true. My cousin does that...scary. Is all about money.
What is with all these questions about typecasting? When he was on ST he was a YOUNG ACTOR! Most young actors career's fade and they disappear. The fact that he's still doing things means something. Don't be so quick to blame things on "type casting".
I often feel sorry for the dead-end careers that it meant for Nichelle Nichols or DeForest Kelley. I often wonder when I will finally see the TNG actors in bigger roles. (Don't tell me that Brent Spiner's recent work was a stellar career. Why doesn't he get better roles? Or Marina Sirtis? Or almost any other Trek actor?)
Well, 7 of 9 is now on Boston Public. Patrick Stewart is HUGE in the Shakesphere (sp?) community and has to many projects to list.
Michael Dorn is on Days of Our Lives quite a bit.
Brent Spiner has been in a few movies and is pretty big on stage.
DeForest Kelley was pretty old by the time that Star Trek ended (movies i mean), but has done many many things back in the day: go here. So really his career wasn't dead.
The list (I'm sure) goes on. You have to remember that just because you don't see an actor on a screen somewhere doesn't mean they are out of work. Lots and lots and lots of actors do stage work (that goes for well known and not).
I personally can't wait for the US to develop Power Armor. Then when all the oil reserves are dried up and there is a big struggle to get the last oil we can totally kick ass. It'll be great. We'll invade China. Then they'll launch their nuclear missles against us. Our missle shield will fail miserablely so we'll launch back. The world will turn into a vast wastland of backward technology, mutants, crashed whales, aliens, and "jet". But its ok because the government will have set up vaults, and later we'll have the Brotherhood of Steel slowly reintroduce technology. Of course we'll have to deal with the Enclave then to. Anyway, I'll be in Vault 14...no wait...Vault 13!! But then our water chip will break so we'll have to find a new one and then......
Socialism can only exist in an ideal world. This, unfortunatly, is not anywhere near an ideal world. As long as there is a position that has more benefits one way or another, socialism will not and cannot prosper.
Gateway will fold soon anyway. They dumped way too much money into their retail stores. Now that the industry is going south and that computers are becomming a commodity, Gateway won't be around much longer. They are substandard and their novelty has worn off.
I was just basing this off of what I was taught in my econ course (stupid prof. Gotthiel, he shall rue the day). Also, the theory seemed consistant to what I saw in some of the poorer European countries such as Czech Rep., Spain, etc...
That is assuming that the prices are the same there as it is over here...which it won't be. Its simple economics. Countries that have a higher GDP will "pay more" for goods than a country with a lower GDP (converting funds to the same currency that is). However in most cases you'll find that the price of the good is adjusted so that realistically two people (in different countries) actually pay "the same" for the good. By the same I mean the cost appears the same to each of them. ie) the person in the country with a high GDP pays a higher price than the other person. But looking at the big picture both people pay the same amount proportionally to their wage.
Wow. This is harder to explain than I thought. Show of hands...how many did i lose?
Use windows, you have the virus problem to deal with due to the popularity of the OS.
Use linux, you have the hacker problem to deal with due to the fact that those people have no lives and think they are so cool cuz they can do things to my box. I just think about what "Lowtax" would say in the situationa and I pee myself laughing.
I have an idea. Why don't we all post about how.4 FPS is or is not really.4 FPS. I mean, half of the population of new york already has, so the rest of us should too.
Good god. Are you all that bored that we have to post about the same thing over and over and over and over and over....
Winter break is all about temping. Its easy, its money, and well...its easy. :)
Well actually you do because it works with Netscape and probalby Mozzila cuz that its related to netscape...
Not that I've seen...
Sony is MUCH bigger.
And you are a fucking coward.

How much would it cost to use Linux?

Its called a VCR, look into it.
Oh he didn't take credit for its creation. All he said was he was the "father" of the internet. He helped get it initial funding.
yea, transfering a whole CD in 10 seconds is lame...idiot.

Without sound too much like a loser Humans won't meet the Romulans for quite some time in the Star Trek timeline.
