> Microsoft bulletin detailing story of VeriSign issuing two Class 3 code-signing digital certificates to an individual fraudulently claiming to be a Microsoft employee: Erroneous VeriSign-Issued Digital Certificates Post Spoofing Hazard
Actually, in this case it is safer to actually always trust Microsoft. The reason is simple, if you always trust Microsoft and you get an executable signed with the fraud verisign signature, you will be asked if you want to run this file signed by Microsoft corporation. Now you should know that you always trust Microsoft, and therefore you shouldn't be asked if you want to run a file signed by Msoft. However, if you don't always trust msoft, it won't surprise you when you're asked if you want to run a file signed by them.
The concern, from what I understand, is that a user might be lead to believe that "readme.txt" will be opened and viewed as a text file by IE. This, when in fact the website has placed executable binary/script data in the file and changed the appropriate response headers so that IE is fooled in to executing it as a program if it is 'opened'.
This is wrong! IE is not fooled to do anything. IE will correctly open this file in the associated program for this file, which is (on most Windows computers) notepad. If it contains binary data, I guess you'll see some garbage. If you can tell me how this could ever be used in such a way that an MZ/PE file with the extension.txt will be executed as an executable file, then I'll believe you.
The problem here are files with the extension.scr,.ocx and.dll. These are all PE files. In other words, when choosing "open" in IE, after clicking on the filename, the file will be executed.
Personally, I don't consider this beeing a bug at all. If you choose open on a PE-file, you should expect it to execute.
I do however agree with the argument that most users have no idea what a PE file is... the question is though, does that make it a bug?
My opinion, this is overblown 1000 times in media.
The beauty of/. - everyone gets their say. I personally think that your post is pure crap! Beeing Swedish myself, I like the way you just turned about 22 million people into tree-huggers.
I think you should loose karma for you post. Not because of your opinions, but because you fail to understand that the entire population of Scandinavia isn't the ones that decide the nobel prize winner (nor are we all tree-huggers).
I have never agreed with all winners of the nobel prize. Still, I think the nobel prize is a great thing. It shows that your work is beeing noticed and that it means something.
I don't think any searchengines would list slashdot.org high on their lists when searching for "illegal music" or "free porn", which I correctly asume is the only thing new internet users (didn't call them newbies) search for.
In any case, I don't think the study meant to show who uses what searchengine, but who uses which portal!

If I was a doctor, telecommunication specialist, farmer or any profession or skills needed down there, I'd go. However, currently I believe I am helping in the best way possible for me. I think that most programmers cannot do much more that donate.
First of all, by saying I work in a different country than the one I was born in does not mean I work in a thirdworld country. I am not taking the job for some poor person that can barely feed his family.
Second of all, you say you can accomplish the same as me, my question to you is... are you? Countless times have I heard this from people... most of whom have never given anything to anyone.
I was aware of the fact that some people may prefer other methods of helping, I was simply trying to put forward mine (which is the main reason I like/. , all ideas get heard and everyone has a say). For some odd reason it seemes that you don't like the fact that I donate some percent of my salary. I can asure you I never expected a reply like yours.

... and right now you are doing what?
I think that IT people do best in donating. You can argue about this, no doubt about it!... but thinking that what I'm doing doesn't help?
I don't really understand why you need to work for a non-profit organisation abroad. I am currently living in my third country, and in a few months I moving to my fourth. I don't work for a non-profit organisation, instead, I work for a company that gives me a good salary.
How is this good and how does it help anyone in a third world country?
I give away approx. 300 dollars a month to two different organisations.
The amount of money I give away isn't really noticable to me (I mean, I can pay my rent and drink my beers), and if I believe the adverts from one of these organisation, I am getting clean water to 1500 or so children.
My suggestion to you, get a good job in the country of your choice (if your anything close to good in the IT field, this shouldn't be too hard), earn money and DONATE! I think you will help more this way.
North American GSM seems to be low priority for GSM phone builders.
That is because "North American GSM" doesn't follow the standard. GSM is supposed to be running on 900/1800MHz. However, for some reason, the US doesn't like it when they don't get standards set the way the want them.
Sometimes the rest of the worlds ends up suffering because of this... however... this time it is the US who has to suffer. Don't get me wrong, I have nothing against the US, it just annoys me that I have to swap my nokia 8210 to a big thing that I can hardly carry just so that I have a phone while I'm in the US.
Since the really big mobile producers are based in Scandinavia/Europe (Ericsson = Sweden, Nokia = Finland) and some in Japan (Toshiba, Sony etc etc), it is obvious that they will build mobile phones that can be used in their own countries. Also, by doing this, roughly 3 Billion (yes, I made this number up myself;))people "extra" can use them too... wow, aren't standards great?
As long as the US doesn't use the standard frequencies for broadcasting, you will never get any GSM phone at launch!

If you look at most "new" viruses that are added to the databases of Antivirus products, you can see that they aren't actually new. Most of them are modified versions of some existing virus. So, if we get another case where someone modifies an existing virus to avoid detection by AV products, is he the creator of it?
I say that he is the creator just as much as Jan de Wit is the creator of this worm.

The XBox will also have a Hardrive. I am not sure how this will work, but I asume you will have to "install" games. This does allow for faster loading times.

I just read through my post and realized how much pro-MS I sound:(. However, I do actually think that the XBox could end up being a really cool console.
Most European countries already do this. I know for a fact that France, Sweden, UK and the Netherlands have special tax on the CDR's that goes to the Record companies.
Personally I prefer putting the mp3's on my MiniDisc. Since I don't use CDRs to put music on them, it annoys me that I'm paying the record industry money by buying CDR's. But then again, MD's don't have this tax... so I guess it evens out.
I dont like the fact that some people (countries in this case) can do whatever they feel like breaking any rules they see fit.
The patent is there to protect intellectual property. I think it's time to start seeing the drugcompanies for what they are... companies. If people/countries can simply ignore patents, then drugcompanies will simply stop researching new medications.
The Brazil government should be sued for this, and Roche should win. I agree that people's lifes are important, but we have to understand that the rules exist because they have to.
In a perfect world, all medication should be free and no child should go hungry. Sounds really good, but we all know that this is not reality. Unfortunately, we will not reach the perfect world by ignoring rules. We will just end up making it worse. If the Brazil government can ignore patents, why can't the US do the same? The entire Africa is poor and they all have AIDS problems, why can't they ignore every single patent there is for AIDS medication?
We can clearly see here that this is getting out of hand. This cannot and should not be allowed!!
If the Brazil government will get away with this, I should be able to copy MP3's legally. My reasoning for this?
Well, alot of artists I listen to have drugproblems and/or alcohol problems. The ones that don't... well... they are artists... so they will soon enough. By not buying their CD's and thereby not giving them any money, I'm saving their lives.

However, IE started coming as part of the OS, and I think that on my 150th reinstall of Windows 98, and the lack of energy to re-download Netscape with my modem made me (without me even realizing) switch to IE.
As it happened without me noticeing, I never really reflected over the fact that I was now an IE user. However, a few weeks ago I was talking to an old friend over IM. I asked if he had updated his IE. He's responce was:
"I remember that you told me never to use IE a few years back, so I am still using Netscape 4,x".
After I finished laughing, I realized that somehow I became an IE user. I guess this is what happens if you get stuck with Msoft OS'es:(
The fact that I am now using IE does not mean I want to use IE. It just means that currently, IE is working better then any other browser I know. The question is, will someone ever again produce a browser that will have a bigger marketshare than IE? I think not! This is kind of sad, but it does prove something. If ever Msoft enters a new area, and if they are not stopped quickly, they will get the whole market in that area.

Well, alot of artists I listen to have drugproblems and/or alcohol problems. The ones that don't... well... they are artists... so they will soon enough. By not buying their CD's and thereby not giving them any money, I'm saving their lives.
Let's just write a new worm that goes out and finds computers with this vunarbility. If it manages to get onto a computer, it will automaticly download the microsoft patch and apply it. Problem solved... wasn't so hard now.. was it?
I remember myself using Netscape 4,x. At that time, IE 3,x was out. I also remember thinking that I would never change to IE. However, IE started coming as part of the OS, and I think that on my 150th reinstall of Windows 98, and the lack of energy to re-download Netscape with my modem made me (without me even realizing) switch to IE. :(
As it happened without me noticeing, I never really reflected over the fact that I was now an IE user. However, a few weeks ago I was talking to an old friend over IM. I asked if he had updated his IE. He's responce was:
"I remember that you told me never to use IE a few years back, so I am still using Netscape 4,x".
After I finished laughing, I realized that somehow I became an IE user. I guess this is what happens if you get stuck with Msoft OS'es
I cannot understand how Amazon got this patent to start off with. It is one of the stupidest things I have ever seen. I'm very happy to see that they are (hopefully, fingers crossed) not getting away with this!
:)
Well... after getting rid of the doubleclick patent, it is time to get rid of the single click patent
