i have a droid 4 and it already can tell when you pull the phone from your face in a call to bring up a dialpad, it can tell what time it is and set battery saving modes on a schedule. it can tell if a caller should be able to ring the phone after 10 pm-6am(default) only if they are in your favorite numbers list.
but solid wood floors are kinda hard to drill through it's not a wall issue shoulda specified... oh well also i rent from relatives who told me to just use wifi...
i had more depression trying to work for a living than i do collecting social security. when you face insurmountable problems there is a lot of depression... when you don't realize you're causing the insurmountable problems it leads to failed suicide attempts because lets face it, you're gonna try pills and you'll do it wrong.
i am better now and i am on medicine. it feels good to be alive now. and the only problems i face are ones me or others put before me. and since i am not fabricating evil self destructive thought with no one to stop it, well i can actually do things to feel good about now. i was very very depressed when i was younger because i played out in my mind doing bad things to people, the darker my thoughts the worse i felt but at the time it felt like striking out against the world the man etc. when i put the pieces together i realized i was actually sabatoging my own well being it took a long time, because in my social life i looked for the 'right words to say' instead of the 'right way to tell people what you want from them' so there was a lot of darkness in my life because i was causing it. it took time and medication to fix, and now i am much happier. i don't have may friends except online but i am much better now.
am i the only person still using wired controllers? what benefit does adding a battery a radio frequency transceiver do for real end users? besides not having to have break away cords on the original xbox so violent players and people tripping over your cord to get your attention doesn't have? i don't like wireless unless it really is needed. my tablet immediately drops traffic if my desktop wifi is on as it is, and i don't live in a big city. sometimes the laptop wifi interferes with the tablet too, and these are licensed devices that supposedly cause no interference, and must accept any interference. if it wasn't rental i would probably drill holes and run wires but that is a real pain but i guess so is the microwave interrupting signal too. wireless everything is a nightmare in battery cost for no good reason the wires are cheap and recyclable.
it reminds me of cell phones, they started with free cell to cell calls and then they started phone subsudies and then smartphones hit, and they found a new cash cow, data plans. now i know there are ways around this, like tracphone etc. or flexible plan switching.. or not owning a smartphone but compared to cable's pricing for data there is no way to use drmed apps from ios store or from google play that don't let you do anything without internet. fine when you're at a wifi site but awful anywhere else. cell phones cost much more than cable tv internet and voip phone and they try to make you pay for software to tether devices like laptops... it's dumb this isn't 1980 why can one company make money charging 40 a month for internet when cell carriers cant not even in their home markets? i realize wired networks cost money to maintain but cell towers don't cost as much as they used to and some places are going 'no land lines' except for cable... they like lying about how expensive it is, because the government auctioned a lot of wireless spectrum to make a fast buck... and it still sucks...
i have been using ubuntu for over a year now. i don't game as much but my laptop is coping just fine without windows. my laptop still can boot windows, but it doesn't need to, because everything else is easier and more open than windows. i did recently replace a cheap gaming desktop with a windows 7 custom built rig (built right by myself the other i obtained through people who didn't know what they were doing) but i only game on weekends (because i can only handle so much gaming time) so most of the time i use linux and android devices. i just bought a tablet to see if a tablet with a keyboard can replace my use of a laptop during the week, the phone is too small a screen, and hooking it to the tv only works well for streaming netflix.the laptop is over 3 years old, so i have some time to decide if i really can make due with a tablet, or if it's just yet another toy.
56kbps was half way decent when i last used it. i wanted faster but with hardware compression of headers and full content text would send at 114kbps and computers then were mainly shipping text. with online drm and online updates and streaming media though things have changed. to stream you need a bit more bandwith but 6Mbps is fine really you only need 3Mbps to stream standard definition. hdtv takes more but giving one individual user 1gbps is a nightmare if they get struck with a virus that is 0day.
seriously though as funny as iphone saying windows phone is better just because it had no dislikes and 5 5star ranks. so are you one of the five windows phone users?
i can think of a thousand things that can be done without needing to exceed the max speed of a hdd. for instance your computer can check every letter you type and offer a list of possible words. my phone does that everywhere i type. windows and linux both can do that too, and a dictionary isn't a huge set and it's the RAM throughput that limits the operations that can be done. since the dictionary library is loaded into ram on boot up. the nice thing about modern computers is you can buy one that theoretically would require 1000 watts of pull, and yet by not powering everything and underclocking the cpu can idle at as low as 13 to 200 watts, depending which speed you chose. mine idles at 125 watts which also happens to be the voltage draw of the cpu at maximum power. only real math problems and bitcoin mining really push this machine to it's limits, and i don't bitcoin mine and am not a seti at home user. i do video game, but i find that only a certain subset of games are truly worth playing. so i don't push the system to it's limits gaming either. i mainly bought the fast computer because i don't trust cheaply built machines, and the price/performance angle was just right for me.
the nice thing about an ecosystem in a bottle is that nature self corrects on usage of resources. the water evaporates but reforms as dew, the sunlight is temporary but the only form of energy waste, as the plant parts die and are consumed by micro bacteria, which make the co2 for the plants to process.
the problem is the ecosystem in a bottle is totally ignored by many people. they cling to lies. they cheat. they rise above diseases, or pretend to. humans have clean tap water from underground aquifers. humans have plastic to wrap food in and protect it from competing life forms. if we built a dozen nuclear plants for the sole purpouse of making distilled water to feed our greed for fresh water, and thus made the earth even more inviting to symbiotic life forms (plants) we could exceed the nature easily. but atomic energy and fresh water only make the problem worse, by letting us get our glass bottle ecosystem to absurd levels of production. where nature would stop, humans would proceed. this is a problem created by humans and well known since the romans began moving water to fit their goals for life on earth. and yes atomic energy comes from stars and geothermal comes from natural thorium reactions. so there is plenty of energy but the way we use it is changing and it is scary because no one can find a state where we are 'happy' with what we've done to the earth.
geothermal energy comes from thermonuclear thorium reactions in the molten layers of the earth. thorium comes from supernovas thorium reactions come form the sun. so yes all energy comes from the sun, or more correctly the suns that existed before ours was formed.
and where do we store our bits? in lasers around blackholes? i have a bd-re drive and can get 50 GB of storage discs. from the internet archive i can legally download oggs with as little as 370 mb for a 90+ minute film with audio and color... at that rate an hour is 246.67mb or 200 hours on one removable disc. but i already have about 40 dvds in my queue on netflix and several discs of misc movies on dvds and blurays, plus i've got about 100 books on my kindle... all of that is stored on storage so what if you can buy a 32gb sd micro the size of a fingernail. it is still using space, i saw people swarming over cheap movie discs at walmart. and various other things...
even if the cloud had all the data, there would still be networks, even if the networks can send the data cheaply that isn't an end to physical media, it just changes where it is being stored physically.
linux is quite prevalent on smartphones. the difference, is that phone vendors make money selling android and everything 'just works' except for malware using fake icons to pretend to be popular software from google. and while the contract says they don't provide av software as part of your using a smartphone, if you don't give root there is very few apps that can do more than be a nusiance.
i wonder though, is verizon really faster or does the phonehome of the android phones, using wifi, usually connected to a different network skews the netflix ratings.
you can do something about that here and now. the government tried taking away alchohol, the people stopped following laws. it's not like the government can just make us think whatever they want us to think. even if they control the information people find ways to fact check, there have been people who sneak in digital cards with non state approved data on them in countries with tight controls.. before that they snuck in microfilm, and used whatever magnafier they could find. before that they printed papers and before that they wrote cyphers that could be decoded with innocent looking canes. the government has a contract with the people not just the top 1% they truly are the servants of all the people. the sooner they realize they are servants the better. the internet isn't free on the whole earth and probably never will be, freedom is fought for daily, almost everywhere. i know a lot of smart people and i know that i benefited greatly from freedom on the internet, maybe the internet will be reduced to walled gardens, but for some reason i think people will not tolorate the loss of the 'free' internet.
What has ever caused more human suffering than religion?
human procreation. if children were never born they never had to suffer. as an aside religon often promotes the women to produce many children and teach them to suffer. so in a way it's all religons fault that children are born. did you see what i did there?
actually uploading your brain into a computer doesn't offer immortality. for one thing, they can't power a computer that could adequately provide a perfect host for one human mind. secondly it would be very boring, since powering a second mind to interface the first is just as problematic. also there is the 128bit problem. attempting to address(fill) 128-bit memory uses enough calories to boil every ocean on earth. this means that the robotic mind has a huge problem since it would require some way to erase thoughts and if there is a way to erase thought there is a point of failure not related to the 128bit problem but rather to deletion of critical sofware making the mind capable of failing, without running out of energy or maintainers to keep the computer minds working. then there is the problem of maintainers forgetting or incapable of building and replacing broken parts. also there is the problem of people using resources and tools that run against the will of the big huge solar powered computer. because fusion is too hard to maintain and also that water doesn't last if you have a society that maintains the needs of two human scale computers. throw in errors and language barriers well it just isn't working for me.
the big bang theory is as bad as any religion. we cannot and never could detect see or monitor the compression of water. without water compression the big bang theory is impossible. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Redshift redshift however can be measured and explained. radio telescopes can do some pretty cool stuff too. the hubble found so many galaxies that the big bang is further tested...
my point? don't mix politics with religion or religion with science or science with politics. why? because religion is used to manipulate people, politics is a futile effort to give power, and science is easy for both of the former to misuse, such as the big bang theory, if you belive the science our bodies are a fusion of trillion of cells of varying sizes, which i am sure you're more current on that than i am...
also i have seen 'probiotics' claiming to conatain 65 billion viable organisms per dose(2 pills). if there are 60 billion of them in 2 pills there must be trillions of good bacteria in the body itself. i know from a microscope i used to have that i could see many small things moving around in various samples.. my point? science can prove some things, i know scientists are in the job of selling hypothesis not statements of unerring fact. but i can grasp a lot from science. telling normal people that there is no flying spaghetti monster for them to worship by eating it. is rather hard even for trained professionals. they want their hot button issue so they can move on with their daily lives.
i am afraid to tell you this, but there is no dog food fairy, and i am pretty sure food takes energy to be made, packaged and distrobuted. and dogs can't provide video evidence for the police to find and report criminals to the police.
every action a touchscreen can do is emulatable with a mouse. left click is touch, right click is hold tap, double click double tap, zoom scrollwheel, and you have the middle click not even mapped, perhaps torsion emulation, for screens where twisting the screen is a special function. and despite the patents not one of thes notions is truly original if you consider how they are so similar to mouse input. but i am not a patent specialist.
i am reminded. here is a logic statement for logo programming (straight from the manual mind you)

there is no variable no database in logo, yet the damn thing had 3 motorola and one zilog 80 processor to work with. (at least mine did) the next attempt was basic which was all just spaghetti of gotos, on my own i tried mirc scripting. that killed any real effort at becoming a programmer. though i tried learning perl, php, html, ksh... i also tried to learn how to write(fiction), and found that even more difficult. despite having had that goal since childhood, and (in a cute way) my first comic book was written in gradeschool and that made it to the school library. oh yeah i did do a bit of custom map modding for wc3tft but found many ways to crash a pc with that.

looks like sony (who did all the displays for st tng) invented the tablet computer first...
when using dialup on a 486 to a real unix server and the news reader would post for you when you got disconnected with the message ^h^h^h^h NO CARRIER

and yes it can cause death if pnumonia sets in.
