You've fallen for the Average lifespan fallacy. human being have never been prone to just 'dropping dead' at 30. death under 60 has always been due to 'disease' or 'accidents' or 'at the hands of your fellow human' what made the average lifespan 30 or so years for so long throught human history was infant mortality. durring some of the most culturally backwards times in human histories babies have had less than a 1 in 3 chance of survivng their first year of life. now you take one person who lives to 60, one who lives to 1 year of age, and one whop died at 20 of the plauge and you get an 'average' lifespan of 30 years. well, sure statistically you had a 66% chance of not making it to 60 years of age, but i'm not so certain the people who died at one year of age were even aware of the problem;)
the single biggest factor in prolonging human lifespans has been in the 'saving' of infants from diseases and death in child birth from being in the uterus backwards being unable to be safely delivered through natural childbirth. Go areound ask your friends how many were delivered by Cecarian section? nearly every one of them would havesuffocated int heor own mothers womb, unable to be delivered. some midwives were practiced in 'turning' the babies, but that is a risky procedure to both mother and child, which is why nowadays we just cut the mother open and take the baby out.
The fallacy in your argument is that somewhere along the course of human evolutiuon people mysteriously didn't live past 30 years of age, which has never been true, ancient chinese and other cilvilizations writings speak of people living much longer than 60 years even without any 'modern' medicine to help them along the way. the average may have been 30, but that was not a typical age to die even then. BTW, meat was generally not in the buudget of the 'common worker' who hasd to susist of cheper grains. and as such the erarliest history of heart disease are in the aristocratic ruling classes who could afford to eat meat daily, instead of on 'sunday' (if they were that lucky) the primary exception were fishermen, etc, however fish has none of the negative heart health effects that 'red meat' does.
with the exception of the plains indians who had easy access to bison meat, enough to preserve for 'year round' consumption very few early civilizations had easy access to red meat. cattle are very expensive and wasteful creatures to raise, they consume roughly 39 times their selling weight in grasses and grains(over their life time). what's more 'profitable' 39 lbs of grains or 1 lbs of 'red meat' although with cattle you can pretty much ground up the entire plant into cattle feed, wheras humans would only eat 'the grain' so that does change the picture, since one can sell 'the grain' to humans, and 'grind up the plant' for inclusion into feed, and still wind up ahead. having both many lbs of grain and many pounds of cattle to sell.
The 'preference' for meat taste is actually an addiction to the chemicals that eating meat produces in the body. so no without 'genetic alteration' this trait will not go away, yes people can learn to live without meat (how many centuries did the japanese go without any access to red meat? having only fish and rice and fruits and vegrables?) but as has been shown by the 'modern' japanese taste for burgers and beefbowls, this trait does not go away simply because a culture rejects or has no easy access to red meats.
Listen, we have the technology we could turn the sahara into an icebox. how you say? simple, http://solarcooking.org/funnel.htm "As a result, the cooking vessel now becomes a small refrigerator. We routinely achieve cooling of about 20 F (10 C) below ambient air temperature using this remarkably simple scheme."
and that's without designing the solar cooker specifically to 'cool' water into ice, using a 'heat pump' type device to accelerate the radiation of heat from say, water in a vaccume 'insulated' snow formation chamber etc. once you've got a few thousand of these machines creating 'snow' all night long, the snow itself will 'reflect' enough heat back, especially if the device can focus 'away' from the sun to 'continue' to draw the cooling power of space to maintain a 'cool draft' to preserve the snow from melting. all without using electricity. imagine if the devices did utileze small photovotaic piezeo electric coolers by 'daylight' hours to further enhance the 'radiation' of heat into space.
yeah, we could hold the winter olympics in cairo;)
You mean portugese, but i digress. It seems to me that the issue here is not with linux being Ready for the blind, so much as linux being ready for the Blind non-english reading user. Considering that english is actually a 'minority' language it would seem that what people should be doing is making sure that blinux etc all have usable documentation in as many common languages as possible, eg: chinese, german, french, etc etc.
I can understand why the blinux developers etc might not have had time to master several languages, seeing as how they've already overcome blindness to learn how to use computers with the power and functionality that few sighted users are able to muster.
So what's up? Do people really LIKE to review FBI warnings and threats?
Step 1. find a decss app on google. or use something like dvd shrink. step 2. buy DVD burner for $40. step 3. buy recordable DVDs they sell Dual Layer media (it's spendy!) or one can just use DVD shrink to remaster as 'just the movie' and strip out all the menus etc. and make it small enough to fit a single layer DVD
so you see, UOP override isn't a big feature, because people can just rent the DVDs from blockbuster, or from netflix, copy it, and all for a fraction of the cost of 'buying' the movie.
Well, you're missing the most obvious 'wireless'* video method, Front Projection technology. I hear that some of the nice ones from TI are getting pretty high resolution nowadays, if you've got the $$$$$.
*= in the sense that between the projector and the 'screen' there are no wires.
400 mg of Capsaicin is basically like eating pepper spray.
and fine good eating it is.
or course you're going to the bathroom about 15 minutes later;) at least I am, and it's not coming back up... i get to feel the love out of my burning ring of fire.
I'm surprized pepper spray hasn't taken on fad popularity with models who want to be like bullimiac, only out the other end;)
oh, and yeah there is no 'may be' a light weight you ARE a light weight. I drink cyanae pepper juice for cash just to prove i can. it's amazing how easily people will fork over a $20 when you pull out a tall shot glass and come cyanne pepper juice.
Just because you can 'feel' the prostrate through the anus, does not make it the shortest path to Bring a chemical in Direct contact with it. And technically, the shortest path is going to be straight up the urethra. ouch. if you eat capsacin some will pass the blood barrier membrane and through the cirulatory system to the prostate. enough to provide the kinds of results in this study? i don't think so, colon cancer, maybe. but they didn't prove that capsacin has an effect on colon cancer, only prostate cancer.
Not a big shocker though, a poison in high concentrations caused cancer cells to die;) a poison that normal cells have stronger resistance to, and FWIW, habanero's aren't going to do it for you, you should go out and buy some of those police sized peppper spray cans. Since they're technically a spray one Could attempt direct application, but I doubt that the 'burning sensation' would be worth it even if it could CURE the cancer instead of reduce tumour growth by 80%. pepper spray also makes a great burrito spice, if you like 'rolling on the floor crying to mommy burning hot' spicy.
wire may have latency advantages, but they also have this nifty 'wireless' technology available... so one can take one's keyboard and mouse a few meteres farther than cable can be extended.
That being said, the 'insulating foam' seems like it has less to do with the silence than with the ultra silent, ultra efficient heatsink like the zalman one they used (they also mave an aftermarket VGA cooler model, that's just as silent)
yeah the CPU and VGA cooler each putting out around 20 dbs of noise;) and then claiming it's some 'special foam' that's making it virtually silent? 20 Dbs isn't that silent either, i usually run my TV set at 20 DBs. although i suppose this is where the 'special foam' comes into play.
In any case, this system is hardly a 'silent' PC, when one can get a pretty simple to install WC kit, that with a 'fully submersible pump' will emit about 2 dbs of noise.
hrm. ~20 dbs or 2 dbs not to mention that one can build a full mineral oil bath rig that uses the same zalman cooler sans fan, for a 0 dbs 'full immersion liquid cooled' rig.
'silent' gaming rig? i've heard quieter ones. sure they all weighed a LOT more than this one. but if ones wants a TRULY silent gaming rig that's the obvious performance trade off.
nearly ending cellular aging is possible, yes, consider the giant sequoia. what i am saying is that no matter how good his techniques are at slowing his individual cellular aging process, it doesn't reverse the 'genetic self disctruct' code in the human genome nor does it 'eliminate' the fact that semi-permiable mebranes won't remain semi-permiable forever. aka 'gradual' kidney failure.
The problem is that human cells are programed to divide so many times then die. some aren't even programmed to divide, so when they begin to fail they fail catostrophically. his chemistry, all his work, someves a lot of problems, but like any 'ugly kludge' it creates problems. he's trying to use the body's chemical factories to extend his life beyond what it was programmed to achieve. until that 'program' to self terminate can be delt with none of his work will make a man live forever. And yes, a lot of genetics work will be needed if we're ever going to create a human body that is capable of remaining strong and helathy for a thousand years or two.... and even then a lot of supplements will be required to keep a body in tip top shape for 2,000 years... and of course, many 'prone to failure' organs will need to be grown and harvested from either lab cultivation, or 'organ growing pigs' kidneys livers and hearts are among those organs which people will need 'transplanted' even after genetics enhancements enable human life to extend to the 2,000 year range.
And no matter what he's billing the technolgoies as, it will not be eternal life. the best we're going to get is 2,000 years. a pretty far cry from 100 years, or 50 years... but still no one will be able to live forever;)
if like me you lived in one of the larger paper lumber harvesting regions of the US like me you'd have known that paper companies had been liquidating their assets for more than a year, to try to compensate for lower demand/more competeitive global markets.
yup, the sale of former timbering grounds have freed up massive chunks of valuable real-estate at rock bottom prices, at least here in wisconsin.
I know you have a dependancy.. "a dependency that can be as destructive as alcoholism and drug addiction." And yes, I admit I have it too. "IAD is said to be closest to pathological gambling."
My advice to you is to get outside. enjoy some fresh air. Talk to people, and if you can't find any people, talk to some animals, perhaps getting yourself a pet.
If you continue along the path of a 'net addict' you may find it difficult to maintain any type of long term relationship, you might find that you're loosing sleep, possibly even skipping work... just to get your fix of 'the internet'
building your own zen garden is also a good way to help recenter yourself and find liberation from this 'need' to have the internet, at any price. Or you could continue onward into the dark and chaotic world of the internet, finding that looking for jobs simply kills too much of your internet time.. that girlfriends are just a waste of time, because they keep on intruruping your 'internet time' perhaps you might even combat your intrnet addiction with 'hard drugs' to find release from all the stress at not being able to be 'always on'
best of luck to you, myself I've long since given in the will to fight. I am an internet junkie, and need my broadband fix, daily, or else i need to get some video gaming, or some anime, or some time with a really good book... i just can't cope without my distractions...
if you're using windows, and are taking directly from the camera or memory card, it's a bug in the Mass storage class driver.
The MSC driver can hard lock (requireng removal of the USB device).
If the problem happens no matter where you locate the images (local hd) then it've got no clue what your problem is. but from the sounds of it you've been using IM to parse pics from your cmaera directly to some local folder, likely the new camaera has faster memory that causes the MSC lock up issue (it does not happen with slower/older devices)
exactly i'm going to laugh when he dies of kidney failure at an early age.
that being said, i take amino acids daily*, and omega-3s when my diet is low in fish/flax, and take half a 'one a day' multi vitamin 2-3 times a week.
when i take too many pills, my urine takes on a deep yellow to yellow green hue, beats peeing clear water as i do when ingesting too many caffineated drinks (what does the body do with all the 'black' in cola is it all from carbon?)
The human body is highly adapatable, it can susrvive on nothing more than bugs and water for months at a time, as we have seen so often on 'survivor' (those of you who watch it) people can and do routinely fill their bodies with poisons (capsaicin, nicotine, etc etc) and many of them live longer than people who've tried thier best to be as healthy as possible (if for no reason other than the misfortune of getting in the way of that bus)
* the formula is formulated for body builders, so i know it's pretty spot on, but i take far less than the 'bodybuilder' would.
-75,000 (cost of building new, $250,000 home) +250,000 (value of new 250,000 home) he should have properly assessed the value at
$142,000 (he could have halved that, because not everyone has a fleet of low price contrectors ready to put in a $300,000 home for the lowest possible cost in materials and labor)
Because after cost of demolition and rebuilding the home, that's what it was worth to pay for the thing.
Remember a $300 home costs a lot less to build, most of the value is in LOCATION. a simple home in materials and labor cost $25-30k and a more extravagantly outfitted house costs more in the 50-100k range, and then you get into the truly extravagant estates that cost millions to actually build, and even more to actually buy;) but again, bare lots might be only worth $10 grand in that area, but how many bare lots are Actually FOR sale in afore mentioned area? most likely Zero. still, contractors like the one i mentioned are looking to maximize profit. why whould they pay good money to demo and rebuild at a site when they can hook up with banks full of forclosure properties that might be willing to negotiate terms more in their price range?
property values generally have to be on the rise in an area for contractors to be looking out for 'cheap' properties they can demolish and put in 'new' houses though. afterall, why make 20k of profit when one can make 200k of profit?
Okay as a correction I will concede, that the Stimulants left me Fatigued. As most stimulants will after extended use. I would also like to point out that i was offered Two of the 'dozen or so drugs' on the market. Neither of them had in my opinion much of an impact.
any results that my 'parents' attributed to my taking the drugs (i was on them for almost a year, although i only took them for 3 weeks) were actually coming from the Rest of the treatment and therapy. My parents were looking the whole time for a 'fix my kid so he's normal' solution that wouldn't eat up their precious time... which is why they eventually went to medications. and frankly I worked just hard enough at the problem to get taken off the medications...
YMMV, but IMHO the person who needs to be asked the question most of 'do i need some medication to deal with this' is often the one given no voice in the matter. the child themselves.
I'll admit sometimes they had good jokes, But I watched MST3k for the bad movies:) if it takes a bunch of comediangs ripping on bad movies to make airing them palatable to the general public, then so be it...
Admittedly not all B-horror flicks are bad, but there are Plenty of bad b-horror flicks, and netflix has a LOT of bad movies for rent.. i mean cmon with over 55,000 titles they can't ALL be winners..
having been diagnosed with adhd as a child, all i have to say is no, the 'drugs' they offer are little more then sedatives. treating them like they're a 'cure' is not looking at the problem, or the cause of the difficulty. so just passing out these drugs to 35% of US schoolaged children is NOT the answer to the problem (parents who aren't taking an active role in their child's progress, etc)
I got far more value out of the programs the therapists etc gave my parents to help me than the 'medications' which i stopped taking after 3 weeks because I could tell that all they were doing was making me tired, and the 'real' benefits weren't from the medications...
yeah, i'm sure some people might find the meds useful, but the're really not solving anything. They never have nor will they ever sell a magic pill that makes all the problems in life go away. If they ever do, it most assuredly will be a simple nanotech mind control implant, that allows your body to be used as a mindless robot while your mind drifts thorough an electronic fantasy world...
people have said that before, then they made this show called MST3k where they pulled up the most god awful horrible flicks they could, and made as many sarcastic comments as they could with their 'shadow' heads in the way.
and people watched it enough to keep it on the air for a few more seasons than it really needed to be on so clearly people can't get enough of BAD movies!
But then you're in violation of the DMCA, for breaking crypotographically encoded messages (the light from the furnace) worse still you're relying on the Peer-to-peer technology of 'storytelling'! expect Dan glickman to be 'denouncing' thesse hippy 'storytellers' and their 'shadow puppetry' technology, and a suggestion by canada to implement a 'media tax' on furnaces.
that's right, gp was a fool, anyone pointing out how worthless advertising is should point out Wal-mart's expansive growth while Sam Walton was still alive, and prevented any type of circular/flyer or advertisment from being used.
I don't know about you, but building a a company that made 6 of your 'relatives' hit the top 15 richest people in the world isn't that shabby.
Value per dollar belongs to Word of Mouth. it's true that 'paid' advertising can promote a lot of things, but at the end of the day it's not a substitute for offering the customer what they want. Sometimes the comsumer doesn't know what they want, with conumables like candy, food, etc people seem to be especially weak to advertising, which is why we see one candy bar company spenting more than 350 times as much money on telvision advertising as a 'government' funded consumer health and wellness ad. keep in mind that that's not even the money that it's partners in the retail sector are spending to try and get people to buy their candy FROM them instead of the competitor!
online advertising hasn't matured yet... why? out of all the 'mainstream' consumables i checked of only Coca-cola and hershey's had ads for it's products on the internet. wow, so pepsi, mars M&M, seven eleven, fast food chains, frito-lays, etc all don't have to advertise online yet huh? (admittedly i didn't do extensive research, but still)
and yet consumers seem to be the 'weakest' to consumable ad campaigns, and 'branding' it's not nearly as cost effective for 'retail chains' to advertise, because frankly the only thing to advertise is low price, good quality, and the cheapest way to advertise that is to forego advertising and just use the store front as advertisment.
Well I'd just like to point out a few points 1. Everything is either biodegradable, or erodable. 'non biodegradable plastic' is a con, it's plastic that takes Decades of exposure to sunlight, hot and cold temperatures to erode/degrade away. the thing is, landfills have NONE of that, they have one nice constant temperature, one nice constant level of humidity, and no sunlight of anykind. Plastatcs that can 'degrade' under the conditions found in a landfill can be made, mainly by examining the prevlent soil bacteria, and making the polymers an 'ideal' treat for said soil bacteria. normal houshold goods like 'apple cores' are non 'biodegradable' in that, once burried they become 'petrafied' and fosilized. (after enough time has passed)
so really, 'biodegradable' is just a catch phrase, anything that is esposed to sun wind and rain long enough will break down. although it may not be 'safe' to allow such things to break down that way, as polystryne beads might choke innocent creatures trying to eat them, etc.
however, building nearly self contained ecosystems to break town waste would create more of a problem, than processing them, or simply burying them already does.
I think you meant 'binaries' of course, obviously you can redistribute the source code, it just won't Compile or if it compiles it won't 'run' without the proprietary bits that you had to seperate out.
anyways, it's just a sign of how sad and pathetic things are nowadays. back in the old days if you invented something, but hated patents, you could just tell people how to do it, and no one else could patent it, because you'd proven how to do it first... but with software, you can't even GIVE it away without being at risk of being sued, hense the various 'open source' licences.
I don't know where you were in 2000, but i was using Apache Mysql PHP on *bsd in 2000, to run blog software off my cable modem. LAMP was already pretty functional in 2000, so I don't know why you'd be using static html unless you were just a n00b then;)
If you think zonk is bad, Just think different for a minute, and remember when apple bashed many 'shuttle PCs' for using Intel Integrated graphic, when the mac mini g4 used a full video card slot... and now the Mac mini intel has Intel Extreme Integrated Graphics... intel's graphic controllers onboard are a complete joke for gaming, and nothing has changed about that since apple first bashed them...
16.2 fps in doom 3 @ 640x480, nice. the Intel GMA950 is about equivalent to a voodoo 5500 in my estimation. 6 year old graphic performance, and the mac mini has no graphic card slot. the mac mini is only going to be useful for CPU intensive tasks, like video editing, or for PVR usage, portable diagnostic/file backup computer (when a firewire/usb 2.0 ide/sata enclosure is added).
the problem is... that when they're 'legislating' a bill like this, they spend entire sessions just 'voting to append ammenetments to the bill' and they're adding a couple pages at a time, or so but after a whole day they've got 300 pages of ammentments to the bill. so even if they had read the original bill, with all the ammendments to the bill and ammendments to the ammendments etc just keeping track of the 'current state' of the bill is nearly impossible. why? because congress is still horrobly out dated, and using 'dead tree' technology for all this... if they had some kind of moderernized computer system, with software to grep the ammendments for phrases (and the nearby context) etc that might indicate if they should vote yay or nay, on the ammendments well, it might make things a lot better.
Or more likely, instead of 300 pages of text we wind up with 3,000 pages of text, because people can just copy/paste...
try watching a little c-span once in a while, it's eye opening into how the congress actually works.

And no matter what he's billing the technolgoies as, it will not be eternal life. the best we're going to get is 2,000 years. a pretty far cry from 100 years, or 50 years... but still no one will be able to live forever

if like me you lived in one of the larger paper lumber harvesting regions of the US like me you'd have known that paper companies had been liquidating their assets for more than a year, to try to compensate for lower demand/more competeitive global markets.
yup, the sale of former timbering grounds have freed up massive chunks of valuable real-estate at rock bottom prices, at least here in wisconsin.
friend you have a problem. I'm here to help you.
http://library.albany.edu/briggs/addiction.html
But he missed a couple important variables.
;) but again, bare lots might be only worth $10 grand in that area, but how many bare lots are Actually FOR sale in afore mentioned area? most likely Zero. still, contractors like the one i mentioned are looking to maximize profit. why whould they pay good money to demo and rebuild at a site when they can hook up with banks full of forclosure properties that might be willing to negotiate terms more in their price range?
-75,000 (cost of building new, $250,000 home)
+250,000 (value of new 250,000 home)
he should have properly assessed the value at
$142,000 (he could have halved that, because not everyone has a fleet of low price contrectors ready to put in a $300,000 home for the lowest possible cost in materials and labor)
Because after cost of demolition and rebuilding the home, that's what it was worth to pay for the thing.
Remember a $300 home costs a lot less to build, most of the value is in LOCATION. a simple home in materials and labor cost $25-30k and a more extravagantly outfitted house costs more in the 50-100k range, and then you get into the truly extravagant estates that cost millions to actually build, and even more to actually buy
property values generally have to be on the rise in an area for contractors to be looking out for 'cheap' properties they can demolish and put in 'new' houses though. afterall, why make 20k of profit when one can make 200k of profit?
Nobody watched MST3k for the movies
:) if it takes a bunch of comediangs ripping on bad movies to make airing them palatable to the general public, then so be it...
& hnjr=3
I guess I'm nobody then.
I'll admit sometimes they had good jokes, But I watched MST3k for the bad movies
Netflix even has a b-horror category, so clearly I wasn't the Only one watching MST3k for the movies...
http://www.netflix.com/SubGenre?sgid=745&pgid=338
(after enough time has passed)
so really, 'biodegradable' is just a catch phrase, anything that is esposed to sun wind and rain long enough will break down. although it may not be 'safe' to allow such things to break down that way, as polystryne beads might choke innocent creatures trying to eat them, etc.
however, building nearly self contained ecosystems to break town waste would create more of a problem, than processing them, or simply burying them already does.
but illegal to distribute the resultant code
LAMP was already pretty functional in 2000, so I don't know why you'd be using static html unless you were just a n00b then ;)
If you think zonk is bad, Just think different for a minute, and remember when apple bashed many 'shuttle PCs' for using Intel Integrated graphic, when the mac mini g4 used a full video card slot... and now the Mac mini intel has Intel Extreme Integrated Graphics... intel's graphic controllers onboard are a complete joke for gaming, and nothing has changed about that since apple first bashed them...
