Yeah, uhm, see, one prunes trees and doesn't search all the nodes. Yes, I'm aware that it isn't an exhaustive tree search. Yes, I'm aware that the game isn't "solved." No, you don't come off as clever in your post.
Game tree algorithms have become very advanced. That still doesn't make me see a computer playing chess as something all that astounding. It's playing a game with simple rules and many presolved strategies. The tree is just so deep that one needs fast hardware and a decent algorithm to explore quickly and appropriately. Once you have actually have studied AI a bit, come back.
"There's no doubt to me that Kasparov is still superior to any machine"
That depends on the definition of superior. He doesn't appear to be superior at producing wins in the game of chess. He is superior in that he has many, many other skills beyond chess and far more flexibility than any machine.
I make no such assumption. One is no better than the other, but they are different. Further, the fact that the computer can play chess well doesn't mean that the computer plays chess in such a way that it reliably creates the illusion of human play.
In any case, MY way of playing chess is very different from a grand master, or even your run of the mill chess club member. I hate the game. When "forced" into it I play to lose.
I don't "get" the fascination people have with computers playing chess. Searching a game tree is not something I find overly impressive. The root problem (the tree searching algorithms and such) is somewhat interesting, but the computer isn't playing chess in the same way as a person. I don't really care how far down into a tree a modern processor has time to search. It doesn't indicate any sort of "intelligence" in the holy grail sense of AI. Chess is a very limited, structured problem.
My calculator can find nth roots faster and with greater precision than I can...should I be fascinated by that as well?
The fact that the parent is modded as 5 insightful shows the flaws of having a sea of uninformed moderators. Wow, if the enemy knows your entire code ahead of time, they can crack the message...SHOCKING! If you f* up your code selection, it can be cracked...SHOCKING! I sure found those pieces of information "insightful."
How can it NOT hurt online sales? Either people will see the price increase and not buy as much, or people won't care about the price increase(yeah, right) and keep buying as much, which indicates that in a tax free environment the company could have made more profit via the higher price.
Given that commercially available LCDs just hit average response times of 16 ms, that figure of 75-80hz is meaningless for ghosting. A pixel can change its color value on average 1000/16 = 62.5 times per second for the fastest LCDs available. For the best as of a couple months ago that rate is roughly 1000/25 = 40 times a second. The particular start/stop colors will have an impact on these times.
"for 3d gaming, especially when on an lcd you can't actually see 60Hz flicker... Obviously you don't have an LCD, and you are just spinning the same crap that every other uninformed CRT user is."
Once again, the flaws of a semi-democratic mod system...the ignorant are modded as insightful by their peers.
After seeing Black and White, and comparing the reality to the rather fantastic claims, I don't think I'll be taking anything they say about this iteration seriously.
I am annoyed by people that think that evolution/fitness/etc. represent some sort of goal. Evolution and the associated concept of natural selection are not purposes. They are simply attributes exhibited by a structure that happens to replicate with the potential for alterations in the new copies.
Hacking, cracking and general bug exploiting are already nightmarish in these games. I don't think offloading server functions to client machines would be a good idea...
In an environment where passwords are forbidden to be recorded for any reason, constant password changing can lead to the selection of weak passwords. I for one can easily manage a small number of random passwords, but if I have to be constantly changing them I have to resort to less secure but easier to recall passwords.
I'd really prefer the "I made X into Y" articles were in their own category, rather than hardware. There's enough of them to warrant a category, and I suspect I'm not the only person who has no interest in them but still wants to read legitimate hardware news.
Interesting point.

In other news, water is wet.

I'm 8 years old again, sitting on the floor with my classmates, watching the Challenger lift off...
Are you simple, or just a troll? I've forgotten which motivated me to toss you on my foes list...

Methinks your eyes may need to be checked.
I have the feeling the original, tech crazy poster doesn't quite "get" the idea of the bar.
That sounds just awful. Yay for less human interaction...
That John Romero chick is hot!
"I hope Verant have learnt from EQ"
Yes, yes they have. They've learned that they can piss on your face and call you a bitch, and you'll pay them $10 a month to do it.

Ah the joys of a semi-democratic mod system ;)

I read it for a bit, but it was just the same handful of rather dull jokes again and again.
Ha ha! Microsoft sucks! Ha ha! Users are stupid! Ha ha!
Ha ha! Ha ha!
I can see why that plays well with the crowd here though...
I'm with you man. I also don't understand why Conan the Barbarian didn't work to better address the complex issue of apartheid in South Africa.
Ass.
Am I the only one who has started to equate using the word "blog" with idiocy?
They're different stories. They had previously been granted a stay on the monitoring order. Now the monitoring order has been overturned.

Thanks for the laugh.
