  2. Great Idea! on Charging the Unhealthy More For Insurance · · Score: 1, Insightful

    About time.

It is time to hold people accountable -- for the things under their control.

Why should I subsidize your Big Mac habit and have my health care dollars go to pay for your CABG (coronary artery bypass grafting) because of the heart disease your brought on by overeating and being obese.

The other way of doing this would be rewards. Charge a high rate for everyone. Those who have a BMI < 30 could get a 10 reduction. Perhaps that would be perceived differently.

The end result is the same. People have a monetary incentive to live healthfully.

Before the alarmists beging to cry out "Unfair! Things not under my control!" There are very few scenarios where those proposals would result in people being unfairly penalized. If you are obese, you are at an increased risk for hypertension, diabetes, coronary artery disease etc. Doesn't matter if it was your fault or not. You are still at increased risk.

Why should my money subsidize your smoking habit that will cause lung cancer, bladder cancer, myriads of other cancers and disease?

Ya and that's why individuals like you shouldn't be allowed to reproduce and be parents. I know I will get modded flamebait or whatever but this is outrageous.

Teenage alcohol intake is a leading factor in death, drunk driving accidents, starting a dependency that will carry on through life etc.

How reprehensible that you teach your children and show this to them. Of course it may be legal for you to drink alcohol. Just like it is legal to go out and eat a scoop of cow manure. Doesn't mean it is healthy or wise. Multiple medical conditions are caused by alcohol intake including, obesity, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, coronary aretery disease, cirrhosis, liver failure, esophageal ca, stomach ca, etc and the lists goes on.

My patients that I see every day suffer from the stupid choices of drinking alcohol and becoming addicted to it and what it does in their lives. You should be arrested for child abuse IMHO.

Lets hope your son won't be one of those that goes and drinks because his dad said it was okay and then gets killed on the road drunk driving.

When those who believe in Evolution present it and mandate it as a fact in schools, it is an affront to those who believe in Creation. Evolution is a theory to explain what has happened. It isn't a proven fact nor is it even supported a tremendous weight of evidence. There are many scientific examples of data that contradict the theory of evolution that are not explained. So to have it presented the way it is is "forcing your world view" on us. It would be best to present multiple theories and state that is what they are. Broaden the minds of our children instead of closing out competition.

  13. Wrong on some points, right on others on What You'll Wish You'd Known · · Score: 1

So wrong on some points. If you have any hope of succeeding in highly educated fields where true high paying salaries exist, you must begin your plan in high school.

You have to study hard, learn what your taught and do well on standardized exams like the ACT/SAT. This enables you to enroll in highly selective colleges and receive grants. This makes college easier as you aren't worrying about money as much and whether you are actually getting a good education at a location with a good reputation. Which THEN allows you to get into postgraduate programs, which THEN allows you to get positions at the top of your field.

Waiting until you get to college to figure this out places you years behind those who have taken the course above.

ITs not important if you are viewed as a geek or a nerd in school. Who cares??? Stand up for your individuality, be proud that you like to study and get good grades. You won't be the one cleaning latrines, you will be the one designing them, managing the companies, treating illness etc.
