    This is why the pace of technological growth is slowing. 50 years ago, people would have looked at this and thought, wow, we can bbq live steak, and it won't try to run away.
    Those people had ideas, big ideas. They looked at nuclear bombs and thought "Hey, we could get rid of those mountains blocking our view".
    That is the spirit of innovation that drives true progress...

    Have you ever received a letter, or a note penned on the inside cover of a card? Writing has an aesthetic that is missing in hand printing, or electro-mechanical rendering. It wasn't for lack of imagination that emoticons didn't arrive until computers; it was a lack of necessity.

    I appreciate a written note, or card; it shows that they have taken the time to at least write my name, and perhaps had a thought about me while they did it. That is what writing is for.

    That people volunteer to shop at Walmart is sufficient evidence of programming. Every time I go to a {Walmart, Best Buy, ...} I have a feeling that I'm the butt of a joke to see how much dignity you will resign for a couple of bucks. Kind of like a reality version of The Price Is Right in your own neighbourhood. Maybe I took too much acid.

    I used them in school in the 80s; know about channels, VMs, CICS, MVS etc... but what makes them a distinct entity? How is an E10K not a mainframe? Is it just EBCDIC and old system software?

    If it is just EBCDIC and old system software; shouldn't the article read "even IBM can't figure out how their computers work", at least as a byline?

    COBOL is just another language; any poor sod that had their head stuffed into the C++/JAVA/C# grinder should find it a welcome break. A bit like a tricycle rather than an oceanliner, but a vehicle that can actually move.

    I'm happy to slag microsofts sloppy lazy monopolistic crapware with the best of them; but microsoft research have produced some remarkable works. What is this crap? Research = repackaging with provocative, if meaningless, buzzwords? Was this from microsoft market research?

    Wouldn't it be cool to have a protocol where throughput was not indirectly proportional to delay? The more {comcast,bell,...} throttled your pirate^Wtorrent, the faster it got. If you could combine this with a protocol where latency was inversely proportional to bandwidth, just by unplugging you could have an infinite throughput, zero latency network. How cool is that!
