... what happened in November? Did they forget to press the "cheat" button, or did they maybe lose on purpose in a conspiracy to discredit all the people who showed how they cheated before? (How fiendish of them!)
The Democrats lost in 2004 because they had a crappy candidate, and let the republicans control the debate. Get over it already.
Well firstly, Marx didn't condone violence. He provided an analysis of capitalism, and argued that the working class must fight to liberate themselves from the ruling class.
An analysis that happened to be dead wrong in every concievable way. From the very start it was un-scientific historcist nonsense, and since its inception it has been completely contradicted by historical facts. In fact capitalist societies provide more opportunity for social movement than any other societies in history (including all the ones that followed Marx pathetic model).
This is what happens if there is no party able to inspire and lead the masses forward - a power vacuum exists and is filled by violent people. Yes. But it's not the only way things can play out, and you'd like us to believe.
Oh, really... Care to give us one - one single - example of a large scale Marxist revolution that did not play out in this manner? Come on, let us hear it.
In fact, the grandparent was only wrong when he claimed that communism is a "precursor" to dictatorship. In fact, communism IS dictatorship. A dictatorship of many or of few (and in practice always of few), but because its very principle is to put the collectivism over individuals, it can be nothing but that. A free society recognizes every individuals to live and work for themselves, and thus keep - and own - the that which they have created with through their own labor. A society that does not do this can only be the horrid distopia that all too many people have suffered under already thanks to the idiot Marx and his followers.
BTW, I hear North Korea will take immigrants. Your Marxist utopia is becons...
I just recently installed Ubuntu (Edgy Eft) on a brand new laptop. I found no previous testimonials or guides about the model I chose, but googling seemed to indicate that all the components had drivers. While I did have a couple of issues that made installation not quite as painless and grandparent, your post severely understates how far Linux has gotten.
And then you want to get your sound working on your newer laptop?
Worked with ALSA out of the box.
Okay, where do I set the wireless password? I know I saw that somewhere before.
Using Network Manager, there is a wireless icon in the top right of the window with a list of accessible networks. Selecting an encrypted one brings up a prompt for a password (the first time you use it).
Oh, the Dlink-chip-du-jour isn't supported out of the box, I have to go find some more development drivers for it, if I can.
Unfortunately, some hardware manufacturers give no Linux support at all, but in fact almost all wireless adapters work. Go with Centrino, and you will be fine.
Hmmmm, how do I suspend this and hibernate it properly?
Both worked perfectly out of the box.
Hmmm, where did my scrolling regions go on my trackpad?
They were enabled and working out of the box.
Now, time for a presentation; install openoffice, that works fine, good. Okay, now to switch to external monitor. Hmmm, Fn-Monitor doesn't work.
The hotkey for switching to external monitor worked out of the box, with all three modes (internal, external, both) working.
To this I can add (in response to others) that both my iPod and my Camera worked straight out of the box, as did Internet access over my bluetooth phone. The only thing I have run into which didn't work was an HP scanner - it turns out that scanners are a real quagmire with no uniform drivers and that HP give lousy support, a little Googling told me this and that an Epson would have worked...
This the Skype foundrs, Zennström and Friis using the money they made selling Skype to create a new service. Skype is a product of eBay, and eBay are not involved in this.
An interesting question is whether they will be using P2P filesharing techniques for video distribution the way they did for for VOIP with Skype. One thinks bittorrent and other types of swarming, but it seems more difficult to apply here (Bittorrent based protocols work by having people download different parts of the file, which is difficult to apply to a stream.)
You are right about this. It isn't hard for anybody with a bit of coding experience to realize that trying to freezedry, serialize and then defrost an entire multitasking OS full of running tasks and hardware is a very difficult task. Especially when computers today are often busy talking to other computers (you can't really expect every TCP connection to suddenly spring to life where it was).
That said, Ubuntu 6.10 does hibernate very, very, well. Try it.
And an editor that allows me to customize what the keys show, so when I am programming I can set up the display to match my key mapping preferences. With smart focus management to whatever program is in the foreground.
You shouldn't need an editor for this. Rather they should release a good API, so that is it is easy for every program to tell the keyboard what to display when that program is in focus. Since your IDE already knows your keymaps, you shouldn't have to tell the keyboard again (imagine what a mess).
This is beautiful technology, but as with so many other things, the difficulty will be in getting programs to support it.
Uncle Milty Friedman, the free-market radical, has finally bit the turnip, maybe his execrable idea that the world is a zero-sum game
Umm, the idea of Milton Friedman and other economic liberals is that the world is NOT a zero sum game, which is why the fact that we are wealthy is taking exactly nothing away from people in the third world (who were poor when we were poor, and would still be poor if we became poor again).
If you are going to spout bullshit, at least you could try to not be 100% wrong in the first sentence...
Are there any linux implementation of XMPP + Jingle? Google seem to say otherwise...
What Skype provides very nicely is something that a) I can use in Linux b) My friends can easily install and use in Windows. The a) part is true of various SIP implementations, but I have never seen one that was one-click-and-run in Windows, while the b) part seems untrue regarding all the other IM-with-voice applications (including gtalk).
First and foremost, I would consider it a matter of concern if ordinary citizens had a reasonable fear of arrest and imprisonment for merely voicing their opposition in public to the actions of the government. If you were too intimidated to post what you have, then I'd worry. But as long as someone as exceedingly suspicious as you still feels free to voice his suspicions in public, I think we're safe.
And aside from worry about it, what would you do at that point? After all, you would have good reason to worry yourself about voicing your concerns, and even if you did you would be taking a large risk. I don't really understand why you react so strongly against people objecting to what you seem to recognize yourself as steps in the wrong direction, while they are still free to do so.

But Padilla got a lot of attention and good representation because of people like the grandparent who objected very storngly to his treatment. If everybody had taken your attitude, that he was scum anyways and the circumstances were extraordinary, then there wouldn't have been any alarm, nor anybody to help him. You cannot justify your position if it depends on other people holding another opinion and acting differently (see the categorical imperative, etc.)
The only reason it was lowered from the more reasonable.10% is because the raving crazies at MADD needed something else to do.
You people are fucking nuts. In my country the legal limit is 0.02%, which means a single small bear, or a very small glass of wine. That is all.
0.08% is two or three pints for me. I would not dream of getting behind the wheel of a car after drinking that much, and I have no reason to believe I hold my liquor worse then most people.// oskar
There will be demonstrations in Sweden's largest cities this afternoon, condeming the actions of the Swedish police and department of justice in this matter. It is being co-organized by the Pirate Party, and the youth organizations of several mainstream parties from across the political spectrum.
In Stockholm it starts at 15:00 on Mynttorget (right by parlament). That is in 15 minutes so hurry!
In Gothenburg a demonstration will start at 16:30 on Gustav Adolfs Torg.
Next time it will be a virus writer who knows about public key cryptography, and then you'll just have to pony up the dough... (or you could stop getting your computer infected with malware in the first place.)
This is why I am lacto-ovo vegetarian. With beans, lentils, soya, ie. stuff that gives proteins, and milk and egg, you're better off on a vegetarian diet than meat.
Except, you forget one thing. In order for cows to lactate (that is to produce milk) they need to have a calf each year. That is right: you cannot have milk without having lots of calves produced.
And yes, obviously some of these calves can also be make into milk-cows, but I can promise you that at least half of them cannot. What do you propose that we do with all the bulls running around waiting to die of old age? In fact, you lacto-vegetarian diet can only work because of those of us who find that dead baby-cow goes well with a aromatic rose'.
You can of course keep your diet (as long as you don't preachy to the people who help consume the waste products of your milk production), but I would not recommend proposing it for the rest of the world.
I had to pay my tuition bill with a cheque (since the university is not willing to pay the transaction fees involved in debit card or bank transfer payments)
People who make such arguments are usually fooling themselves (especially for large, rare transactions like University tuition). The truth is that the processing time of handling all the checks probably costs a lot more then the transaction fees would. Unless they are making the grad students do it or something, your university would be better off with electronic transactions.
Same thing with stores that won't accept (or charge a surcharge) for paying with a card. In fact the costs of cash handling are much larger then what the cc companies charge, they are just not as visible.
Are you guys serious? Yes, we use "cheques" all the time in the U.S. I get my wages in a check, I pay the rent with a check, etc. I do use a debit card for most purchases, though.
Yes, they are most probably serious. I am equally surpised every time I hear americans talk about checks. For me it is a novelty from a past age: you might as well be saying you have to talk to your money scrivener and goldsmith about payments.

Even if I had not (for convenience) given my employers my account number for the direct transfer, I would get it as a payment through a clearance service. Likewise I pay my rent through a direct monthly transaction from my bank account, but if I hadn't set that up I could have done via bills paid directly through my Internet bank account (larger companies can send it as an online bill, so I don't even get a paper bill cluddering my mailbox every month). I pay my other bills (electricity, broadband, etc in the same way).
Beyond that I have a debit card and a charge card for purchases, and cash for small private transactions. What would I need checks for?

However, the Microsoft Match is unparalleled anywhere in the US. It is a 1-1 match for up to $12K, including a $17/hr match for donated time.
So, does this include time donated to free software projects?

Astroturfer exposed!
Something of Microsoft's isn't selling...
How hard? Very!

How much does Google pay *itself* to claim the top ad position for searches relevant to its own products?
The cost to google is loss in revenue from not being able to sell those top positions, presumably...
How hard was that?
Did you mean this?
Eowyn: "The women of this country learned long ago that those without swords may still die upon them."
That is from the movie. I don't remember any such quote from the book.
Why would prettiness matter to a blind person in the first place? Better to just find someone who was soft in all the right places.
This sounds like a good choice for the rest of us, too...

A better translation of "slå till mot" is "crack down on".
Um, maybe you didn't read the article
Did you read the article:
However, Britain's universal health-care system shouldn't get credit for better health, Marmot and Blendon agreed.
Both said it might explain better health for low-income citizens, but can't account for better health of Britain's more affluent residents.
Marmot cautioned against looking for explanations in the two countries' health-care systems.
"It's not just how we treat people when they get ill, but why they get ill in the first place," Marmot said.
