  1. It's the hardware on Palm's Mistakes · · Score: 1

When my m505 died six months ago after only two years use I bought a Tungsten E off eBay. Six weeks later the power button stopped working and Palm told me they wouldn't fix it for free. Two devices over a year and a half totaling over $500 both worthless.

Contrast that with the two Palm III's I still have and still work. My wife uses one of them *every* day for at least an hour total and has for years. I used to put my III in my back pocket with nothing for protection but the flip cover. It still lives.

In short, their hardware is shit and has been for the last few years. That coupled with poor customer service and a sweeping failure to innovate and take chances:

    * Palm should have had an OQO like device out years ago, say something around 6"x9" and 640x480 or more. They could have owned the "personal slate" market but probably never seriously considered the for factor.

    * They have done fux-all in terms improving/expanding/innovating their included base apps. Useful yes, but seriously dated. Where are the handheld apps that are light-years ahead of the competition ala Apple on the desktop?

    * Communications still suck. I can buy their proprietary wifi SD card for my Palm at twice the going price of other cards and I have the privilege of waiting months for it to come out. They should have been market leaders in this area.

I could go on here but I'll spare you. These things and more have caused me to start shopping for something, anything, else. Hopefully not Pocket PC but I don't see much other choice (but something I can at least put linux/Qtopia on).

    Mac NV 6800: $500

Not really apples == apples, but it's been this way for a long time and I'm tired of paying extra for the exact same hardware with different firmware.

Yes, let's hear it for Unsanity. They took an open and free standard, themes and theme engines for OSX, and covertly made it proprietary (with the help of a few key theme authors - I'm looking at you Swizcore, Rad-e8 and Studio 28). This obsoleted themes in the old format as well as theme management tools, most of which were free/open. Yeah, really nice guys with community interest at heart. Personally I will never pay for or use any of their products again.

And if you'd bother to actually check, theme changer hasn't released any code since Oct 2003.

For those of you who have not been around long enough to remember themes.org it was a wonderful, one-stop-shop for themes for everything. Until Chris took over that is, and then it went into a year and a half long dormant period where no updates were allowed by themers, only to eventually be folded into freshmeat when it was apparent that Chris was never going to deliver.

How the hell did he ever get hired by Google?

I put my business up for sale two months ago and took a second on the house to do some remodeling before I put it on the market. Hopefully all will be completed and the house and business sold by the end of the year.

On the one hand I feel like it's a cop-out, like I'm giving up. On the other hand it's like a marriage that's over - what's the point of dragging it out any longer.

I'm tired of being ashamed of my country. Im tired of trying to talk sense to right-wingers that are so brainwashed that nothing short of a full on police state will wake them up (give it time, it's coming). Like another poster pointed out, Americans in general are too fat, ignorant, and happy to revolt. At least I don't see it happening anytime soon. The heart of America has devolved into the MTV/Fox nation.
