Actually, GameCube Tech isn't "lousy" at all. And there is no "downfall" to speak of concerning the GameCube - it's on par with Microsoft's offering marketshare-wise, but whith the added bonus of being actually profitable.
And lastly, 64bit isn't new at all in console gaming.
Here's a concept -- charge different amounts for different product. I.e., Mogwai and Ted Leo CDs should be offered for $5 each. Let the teen masses and the adult contemporary listeners (with their disposable dollars) pay $20 for an album.
I don't think that concept is all that clever, because it'll give the big record companies (and RIAA members) 4 times (even more substracting production cost etc.) more profit per CD than, say, Matador or any other smaller (non-RIAA) label. These labels would struggle even more than now to survive.
-Clean install: wipes everything on your hd and installs panther, no leftovers at all of course
-Archive & Install: Archives your old stuff, installs a fresh system, und puts back your personal documents, users, user settings etc. to where they were before. Keeps your old OS-related files in a folder called "Old System" (or something like that). A great feature btw, which I used on all my updates. No problems at all.
-Update. "Just" Updates your OS. Not as clean as Archive & Install, potentially messy. And your system is way more fragmented compared to archive&install.
On a side note: Sub Pop had a clever contract with Geffen, they received a fraction of every copy of 'nevermind' sold, which basically saved them (financially).
Of course, a lot of the nevermind.grunge.kids also bought 'bleach' afterwards, so (the success of) this band was truly golden for Sup Pop.
Sounds very promising - I just hope they can figure out a deal which pleases all the parties involved. As the Sub Pop guy mentioned in the article, they don't know about compensation yet, so basically it's all up in the air still.
I wonder how many people are working within the "iTMS-Department" - dealing and negotiating with all the smaller record labels, possibly including different deals on a per-band-basis, is certainly no small task.
Anyway, great to see such aggressive moves towards extending their catalogue.
Now hook up europe goddamnit =)..On a second thought, wait until i cancelled my credit card plz. Otherwise i'll be ruined within 2 hours..hmmm matador..
People need to learn that business and pleasure don't mix, and that they will be hunted down like animals when they abuse the privilege of using business resources, be it internet or....slashdot
"Neo is a Cocoa shadow client for the Kazaa network, it is not a real Kazaa client. Neo scans through IP ranges looking for Kazaa hosts, indexes their file list, and stores them locally on your hard drive."
Actually, every file sharing protocol except kazaa's is implemented on the mac.
And of course "most of those files sold were sold to Mac users" because iTMS is only available to iTunes-Users, and iTunes ist until now still mac-only.
While it is true that you can get a (rather low-end) PC for that price, you also get a (nearly) new Mac out of this.
Let's take my machine as an example: For the last 3 years I was quite happy with my G4 sawtooth, running @400 MHz. I've got > 1 GB of RAM (which I could not transfer to one of the new macs 'cause it's pc-100 RAM) and a Radeon 8500 AGP card.
But with the advent of Mac OS X (and WarcraftIII, hehe) it beacme pretty obvious that I was lacking some serious processing power.
So I bought the 1 GHz (single processor) G4 Upgrade-Card, and put it in in exchange for the old processor (which I could sell on ebay if I wanted to) - a 5 Minute Job.
Now I am really happy with my Mac again - OS X is super-snappy, and WarcraftIII runs just great in 1280x1024, all bells and whistles on. Before it was choppy even at 640x480 and all options turned down.
So this upgrade really extended the life of my machine for roughly 1-2 years - at least until the new IBM processors are available =)
Well, since you've been a roadie of them and me not, I guess you're taking home that beacon;) Talking about music & bands always involves personal taste, I guess we are both a little biased considering these guys from Düsseldorf, but even if I try to look at them in an objective manner, I really can't see their point. They didn't say anything of relevance in YEARS (I'm from and live in Germany and am a kind of music nerd, so i'm watching what's happening in music;) ), except you consider some lame jokes and playing-the-fool of Campino (the lead singer) in TV-Quizhhows as relevant.
That's my take on them:-)
I hope you don't think I'm trolling or something, but I wanted to make clear why I don't like them even without taking their "music" into account. Anyway, you like them, I don't, so we can at least agree on that;)
Oh please.. Die Toten Hosen are nothing more than a mediocre stadium rock band these days. I mean, playing the major entertainment shows or being part of annoying comedy shows is *not* was punk rock is about.
Furthermore, they don't have any relevant message or attitude *at all*, except maybe "get drunk". And they are *so* stuck in their past it`s not even funny. Still wearing the 70's punk rock uniform leaves a lot to be desired. Just take a look at their audience: There's everybody: From 15 year old Brittney-Fans to 40 year old accountants who think they are on the edge.
Anyway, I don't want to rant any further, but I think punk like it was 25 years ago is dead indeed - it's the spirit that counts, and you can still find punk rock spirit in a lot of bands, for example on Matador Records. It's about doing what you want and believe in, about creativity, originality and intellect (note that these 3 criteria do not apply to Die Toten Hosen at all), not about playing the same 3 chords over and over agin.
Excerpt form the start page: "The Fink project wants to bring the full world of Unix Open Source software to Darwin and Mac OS X. We modify Unix software so that it compiles and runs on Mac OS X ("port" it) and make it available for download as a coherent distribution. Fink uses Debian tools like dpkg and apt-get to provide powerful binary package management. You can choose whether you want to download precompiled binary packages or build everything from source."
I guess that`s pretty much what you are thinking about.
Erm.. sorry ? You have been to germany exactly what summer ? Actually, internet access and especially broadband is not expensive at all imho. For example I'm posting from my 768/128-DSL-Line, which costs me ca. 50/month, *inclunding* flat rate, which means I can be online as long as I'd like to and do not have a download cap. It would be even cheaper (for me) if I wouldn't be too lazy to change access providers every now and then. Now on to your cellular-phone-thingy. This story is so strange it made me laugh. Yes, everybody and his dog usually has a cellular phone, and I like it that way, but downloading music ? lol ? "Burning" to minidisc ? Come on. You've been to Amsterdam and smoked one, right ?;)
You should check out the VideoLanClient, available at videolan.org. Played pretty much anything for me, *especially* all the.avi and DivX-Files that did not work at all with quicktime 5 and a bunch of codecs (you named them).
Somebody mentioned that VLC stopped working after installing the Quicktime6 beta, so you might want to check it out before installing QT6. hth.
Well, CeBIT is a business tech show. While I'll agree that the PS2 is a big business for Sony, its still a consumer box. From what i've heard, MS complained because Sony is showing consumer tech at CeBIT. Theres also the "CeBIT Home", another tech show especially targeted at the consumer level tech, so that may be the point. AFAIK MS is not showing the XBox, but NVidia is, in order to display their latest graphic chip technology.
Thats pretty cool, actually. Having had not-so-pleasant experiences with SUSE 7.1 and DebianPPC on my Old-World Mac - which is collecting dust right now because my G4 and the iBook aperform way better, this seems like the perfect excuse to reactivate my "first mac". AND its one of the few possibilities to get an up-to-date distro for PPC for free (beer-wise), as SUSE is not offering current versions of their distro for download.
And this goes out to the "why-linux-when-you've-got os-x-running-dept.": Right. But OS X will *not* run on this old machine. (Actually a Tanzania-Board based Mac which had a 160 MHz 603e CPU - now running with a 240 MHz G3 Processor Card).
There is one bit in your post I thought about too for quite some time: A GUI FrontEnd for the ports collection etc. would be great ! Especially for the folks coming from point-and-click-MacOS 9. Having used Fink for a while now, I have to admit that it is indeed pretty cool, but I can tell you that a *lot* of people I know that are migrating from MacOS 9 to X right now won't touch anything like it at least for years.
Then again, they may not be exactly *the* target audience, but hey, more users is always a nice thing.
So when Jordan and his "helping hands" are building the next-generation ports collection basically from scratch, it would be nice to consider an optional graphical FronEnd for it too !
www.wowtorrents.de.vu worked for me

That would explain why it took so long ;)
Concentrate on making a superior product and let word-of-mouth provide what they're paying so much money for?
;)
Try telling that to Nintendo
It's funny. Laugh.
This was a joke Jobs made during his presentation.
A pretty well recieved one at that.
Thank you, certainly insightful.
But I wondered more about the department dealing with all the licening/negotiating/'scouting' etc.
Exactly.

"Implementation" may be a bit over the top.

at least last time i tried
