  2. less users = less help available on Benjamin Herrenschmidt On PPC/Linux, Apple and OSS · · Score: 2, Informative

The one problem i personally can see and have experienced is that you cant find that much information concerning Linux on PPC online. Sure, there are some devoted sites line LinuxPPC.org and others, and groups.google.com is always a nice thing, but if you run into *specific* problems (like me, see further down that post) youre in for some serious pain.
I tried several times to put a usable linux distro on my old powermac 4400 (upgraded w/ a G3 procesor card, a voodoo3 2000 and a realtek-chip-based ethernet card).
Xfree will crash at startup, which can be only solved by going online, grabbing some drivers and compiling them into the kernel, which kind of sucks for a newbie - but thats not the point because I can't get online because the ethernet card is not recocnized even if I choose the realtek drivers.
So I did some google research, came up with the mentioned solution for XFree, but not for the ethernet problem.
Another point is that noone in your neighborhood can help because LinuxPPC is not as common as Linux for i386.

I'll try darwin next, but since my machine isn`t officially supported I`m not exactly optimistic about that.

  11. Does anyone remember.. on Blizzard Announces New Warcraft MMORPG · · Score: 1

    ..Warcraft Adventures ?
After WC 2 came out, there was a game called "warcraft adventures" in development at blizzard; there was a lot of marketing hype around, too (of course). The basic idea was to create an "interactive adventure" in the warcraft universe. It should have had a kind of "comic look and feel", as all characters + the gaming environment looked comic style (no polygons inside).
It was silently axed some time later, cant remember the reason though.
Maybe they couldnt get over that, because basically its the same idea transferred to todays standards (3D, MMORPG).

now if i'm a web media streaming company and i have to decide to go MS or REAL - who do you think i'm going to go with? the server that has a player on just about EVERY desktop, or the server that my listeners have to download the player? that's not a difficult decision!

Well, actually you could get the open source Darwin Streaming Server in various flavors (OS X Server, FreeBSD, Red Hat, Solaris, NT / Win2000) at no cost. Source Code is available too.
So you could stream quicktime content, and quicktime isnt that bad (visually, compression-wise etc.).

    - deepening the pipeline to get more MHz (while screwing up performance) to use in marketing campaigns

    or

    - giving the product another (read: better sounding, but maybe misleading) name. At least Athlons *are* better (at the moment)then P4s. BTW, Motorola just renamed the upcoming G5 from "7500" to "8500" some days ago.
