How about: before posting we see if we can get permission to cache locally (on slashdot). Obviously this isnt always possible, but in the case of small websites it might be practical, and even polite to do.
Maybe they were attemtping a mathematical rather than logic statement. Its funny:
Sega - True = Nokia
Its not quite as funny though as the sign put up in my dorm.
"Diversity - ignorence = civility + respect"
Obviously this was created by Liberal Arts majors as it lacks a basic understanding of algebra, and placed on the Engineering special intrest floor. A comments under the sign was quickly added:
Diversity = civility + respect + ignorence
(btw the Liberal Arts thing was joke, no offense please : )
Funny.. Because if they were cooperating earlier, there wouldnt have been space programs worthy of cooperation. I think we all know that both space programs were a result of the tension between the formere USSR and the USA.
You can leave the laptop lcd's still attached to the laptops and allow the laptops to control the screen. You can get decent enough laptops on ebay for less than the cost of a new video card and monitor.
I saw a comment of yours about smearing poop on somones face and I figured you were a troll. Sorry, I guess I should have read more of your comments before doing so. I changed you back to neutral if it makes you feel better.
I completely agree... I hope it multiplies like warm bacteria in a wet place. This way, when a congressmans computer starts emailing everyone in washington because he clicked the EULA, there will be a surge of support for ending the legal power of EULA's, and the legislature will be clear that EULA's are illeagal.
You are incorrectly using "dichotomous" here. Dichotomous means that there are exactly two states. Dichotomous in the context of the discussion would be where there are two states; either both legal and ethical or illegal and unethical. Obviously your post means to say that there are more than two states. Really 4 states exist: -leagal and ethical, -leagal and unethical, -illagal and ethical, -illeagal and unethical.
Im not trying to flame; Im just trying to make sure words get used correctly.
The color sensations come from synaptic links in the brain. The colors are not intrasinct with the actual sound (or concepts), but made up by our brain based on our experience or innate wireing.
"I'm wondering if each person has a unique color 'signature' If so, could a scanner be developed that sees these signatures and identify people from a distance? "
Any kind of "scanner" doesnt really make sense in this context. Also, the woman can see sounds, and the sound of each pesons name has a color and/or image. So, even on top of the sensations relying on a human brain, its based on sound, so your "scanner" would have to be listening; and listening to what ? voices ? they already have sofware that identifies people by voices.
Incidently when developling software to recognize sounds or voices, the sound is normaly converted into an image before being identified. Here is an image of a voice print
If your liquified salt pool is deep enough the sodium should be able to collect without being exposed to air prematurely. Since sodium is a metal and thus conductive, it shouldnt cause problems when it collects on the negative probe in the pool.
-The river is chaotic and fairly unpredictable in its behaviour. Still, no one is amazed to see it streaming downwards. -The magnetic pendulum with two magnetic attractors, another classical example for chaotic behaviour in physics. Is it unpredictable? I think: "It will stop on either magnet" is a fairly accurate prediction. -Do you have the same position towards M.D.s and medicin concerning the chaotic behaviour of the human body?
.....are relivant in this context. Neither the fact that a river accelerates towards a point of lower potential, nor the ways the human body's systems behave have come to light by attempting to predict the outcomes using hugely complex mathematical models.
The rivers general behavior can be determined with simple physics or observed. And most of the knoledge about human systems has been gained though observation. Neither required complex mathematical predictions based on thousands of questionably accurate measurements.
Saying that the pendulum will go to one of the magnets is not relevant. A compareable prediction with regards to the climate is: It will either get wamer, colder, or stay the same temperature.
Im sure you have valid points, but using those exmples simply weakened your position.
Also, I think you are mistaken about your assertions in chaos theory, but IANAChaotician so maybe Im wrong.
The climate is a chaotic nonlinear system. The results of twiddling its parameters may be counterintuitive or unpredictable.
I whole hartedly agree. Which brings to light an intresting observation: If it is chaotic and unpredictable how can we assume that we know the effects of an increased amount of CO2 in the atmosphere.
C02 is a greenhouse gas, but a green house gas with very small impact when compared to water vapor. Water vapor by far the most effective green house gas, is 50 times more effective than CO2 based on abundance and how much of the IR band it absorbs.
Global warming theory assumes that a change in a realitivly insignificant greenhouse gas will effect the temperature enough to increase the amount of water vapor in the air. The water vapor is then assumped to cause a runaway chain reaction by increasing the temperature and allowing more water vapor to be adsorbed by the air. While it is a fact that the CO2 concentration has gone up significantly in the past 100 years; from 290 ppm (parts per million) in 1900 to 366 ppm in 1998, if a change of that magnitude can set off a chain reaction then we would have been gone a long time ago. There are obviously mechanisms that prevent this from happening.
I think its foolish to believe that we can predict the future of an extremely chaotic system when there are so many factors included. Geography, photosynthasis, ocean currents, weather patterns, ocean absorption, sun spot cycles, seismic and volcanic activity, photoplankton dynamics etc.: all things that are chaotic in them selves and on top of that, hard to measure effectively.
Beyond all of that, I find this particularly funny:
The ice age may be caused by global warming
If you can read that without laughing, I think you need to read it again.
hmmm... satire wire tells you not to do something. I have this sneaking suspecion that they were being sarcastic.
The point was that since encryption isnt very wide spread, weather or not an email is encrypted tells you alot... which is bad. While the content is encrypted, the headers are not, which means if someone sees that you are sending encrypted mail, they will know who is sending it and who is receiving it and will become suspecious. This is actually a very good argument for proliferation of encryption, and use of encryption on everday "boreing stuff".
Once encryption is wide spread, you will know something is spam by the fact that it wont be encrypted... Your friends and people you want to email you will have your public key to encrypt...
For the teachers who really make a difference and teach well, the job should pay more than practically anything else out out there.
The problem is that there arent any easy ways of determining the quality of a teacher, and therefore hard to demand quality when hiring teachers. In this situation then all teachers trying to get a job appear to be worth the same. And on top of that there is really no incentive to pay one teacher more than another. Finally the tenure system keeps bad teachers from getting fired. Until quality of teaching is connected with salary, the salary is going to suck.

I believe word size depends on the processor. I.e. a
32 bit processor has 32 bit or 4 byte word and a
64 bit processor has 64 bit or 8 byte word.
Wow you're right, hunger AIDS "yadda, yadda", are more important space challenges
Can you play doom on Emacs ?

If you melt salt then apply a voltage to the liquified sodium it will split into sodium and chlorine.
