    I think its good that pot is illegal. If pot were legal, it wouldnt be as cool to smoke and high school students would turn to something else that wasnt legal but quite possibly more dangerous. Pot seems to me an effective red harring against things that are much worse.

    Where did this definition come from? I dont like this database as much as the next guy, but distortions of this kind put the reasonable opponents of something like this in a sterotype with people like you.

    Yes there is a big enough market from IBM, HP (and maybe Sun)...

    The reason they are intrested in linux is because IBM, and HP sell hardware. They are intrested in Linux because when software is free it becomes a commodity thereby increasing the value of the complement product, hardware, which they sell.

    So the bigger and more user maintained the Linux community becomes the less it costs IBM, HP and Sun to make sure Linux is a viable option, and a good reason for them to cooperate.

    The simple solution (although expensive) is to get each geek a PDA with wireless internet access. That way they can keep in touch and check up on their machines... kind of like a baby monitor.

    From what Im reading in the comments, there can be problems when upgrading compilers across ABI versions. Can someone either summerize the possible difficulties, or point to a place on the web where I can read about them. What I mean is: If I switch from gcc 2.9x to gcc 3.2, what will I not be able to do, and what problems can I expect

    I use a cassette adapter to listen to mp3s (and the rest of the audio coming from my computer) and the sound is crystal clear. The low quality of sound you are refering to comes from the magnetic tape itself, not the tape player, so this player should be capable of high quality output. And as the previous post stated, it holds 96 MB and is upgradable to 160... Which is pretty decent. Read the article, maybe you would have caught that.

    Actually, if you want to get technical, 1G only accelerates masses at 9.81 m/s2 at 1 earth radius... and slower at distances farther away.

    The information about the companies being named "whatever" and so forth was told to me via word of mouth. I did not experience it myself. The person who told me this lived in Texas and said that it only happend where they live and not here(Pennsylvania). The companies may not have been actual carriers, but just purchasing time on the phone networks and reselling it via collect calls. But then again maybe this person was only repeating a rumor. I dont know... I couldnt find any info about it via google, so I dont know what to think.

    HA ! This in most certainly not a new low... Shady companies are not a new thing in the world...

    Im not sure if they still exist,
    but there used to be several phone companies that named themselves things like: "Idontcare", "Whatever", "Itdoesntmatter" so that when collect callers were asked what carrier they wished to use and they answer "I dont care" they would be put through "Idontcare" and charged exorbetant(sp?) amounts of money...

    The rope is almost never the problem.... Its the anchors holding the rope to the rock (inc. chocks)... Rock climbing and Skydiving are most certainly more dangerous than riding in a car.

    Although the amount of time spent rock climbing or skydiving is almost certainly less then you spend in a car throughout your life.

    From the book of risks:
    1-in-1,000 chance of death: rock climbing for 25 hours, skiing for 340 hours, driving a car for 2,000 hours, riding a motorcycle for 55 hours, and skydiving for 50 hours.

    Most of our opinions on this really dont matter. I have run unstable kernels for a long time and never had any trouble with them. The only time it is really an issue is with production servers, which most of us dont run. I think those of us who dont run production servers should refrain from submitting our opinion and leave the line clear for those who it really affects.

    I had an idea like this when I was younger. Write a worm that spreads to and sits on all computers with a dial up connection. At a paticular time, the computers would activate, and if the worm detected that the user was away from the computer, it would dial up some number DDoSing some poor person or company....

    It would create a mess because while many internet sites are aware of DDoS... the phone system is more vunerable. If there were enough hosts you could shutdown a whole exchange area, or cell area. The possibilties are scary.

    There are a few problems with that... Everybody has a different metabolism, and metabolism is dynamic (ie the food you eat can change your metabolism), so its hard to guess how many calories you burn a day. Also, its really hard to count calories assuming that you knew how many are burned a day.

    My solution is just to run 3 times a week (2 miles)... Then I eat when Im hungry. The only thing I stay away from is Softdrinks/sugar filled drinks, and candy. And dont eat just because you are bored !

    MS IIS: $200 (?)times 20,000,000 = $ 40 billion....

    How much force are we talking when we say force feedback ?
    Depending on the direction the force is being applied, very little force could cause injury... especially over repeated use.

    ... would be one that is spread through html email, and installs a rudimentary gopher server on every computer it infects an then sends an email to everyone on the address book with a link to itself (new gopher server)... Otherwise if you have a single or (many) static server it will be shut down quickly.
