This is one man's project for fun--something that I'm sure is much more personally satisfying (for him) than hunting down bugs in ethernet driver code.
If I have to read one more comment proclaiming that a true geek/hacker has just wasted his time when they could have be working on Project gSnore, I think I am going to vomit all over my pants.
It's called a hobby, and I would like to think that the/. audience could relate to that concept.
This doesn't necessarily mean that the graphic capabilities are worse than the NES or SNES, but that the system includes no GPU or built-in modes for handling sprites and such.
The direct pixel-level control via software basically dictates that the resolution/quality depends on your ability to correctly utilize the CPU according to your needs, which in no way implies that all of your games will look like the Atari 2600 at best.
It's a very DIY solution, and not at all unlike what game developers of the 80's had to go through to squeeze the last ounce of performance out of those machines.
Why is it that we, as a society, have been so obsessed with the absurd idea that the height of technology in advertising will be the giant orbiting billboard?
It would make much more sense to just beam advertisements straight to my dreaming mind... If the ads were from Playboy or Spice TV, I may even consider opting in. I probably wouldn't even mind drinking Starbucks in that ad--but please, keep Carrot Top out of this.
When a user registers, give them read-only access to the forums for a few days or more--possibly with the option for access immediately if they make a donation ($1?).
This should mitigate most of the offenders as they won't bother with the hassle--and as long as your forum is active and has good content, those who are really interested will have plenty to do until the grace period is over.
If you need help or more details implementing something like this, send me an email. As someone who works on/develops community sites (plug), solving the issue of keeping out those that you don't want is always tough--especially during the initial growth stages.
You and your team have put together a distribution that finally takes Linux in the right direction--now I no longer have to paste the same "This Is What's Wrong With Linux" comment for every "What should Linux do?" article. You're doing it.
I'm enthralled on your decision to only include one (the best) of each application-type and provide a 'unified front' for those new to Linux and the spirit of OpenSource.
The O2 XDA II -- my girlfriend has one and it sounds like what you're looking for. Bigger than a Treo and no built-in keyboard, but worth looking into.
As a developer who uses many languages for several unrelated projects, also dabbling in graphic design, I could see a system like this becoming useful if it can identify which files/programs are often accessed at the same time.
Here is somewhat how I would see a session like this going..
Did I just open a folder for project X?
It's a python application. I'm probably going to want Boa Constructor.
It's for a third-party client and not myself, so let's get my email client loaded and bring up the latest.
Google (groups especially) is a must, let's open that too.
Time for some good working music. Pixies it is.
Graphic design is a requirement. Load up the last few files I saved in Photoshop with this project.
Wait -- most of these files are stored on the client's server, accessed via VPN. Now we need to connect to that..
Can't work without my notes.txt open somewhere..
Now where is that function from project Y that I was hoping to use? Easy, let's just access/search that project and hopefully the system will know enough to check its relatives.
Oh! No, I remember now--I saw it online. Luckily the system recognized and searched through project Y's bookmarks too.
.. a few hours later (if I'm lucky)..
Opened up/. -- I must be done working for now. Minimize all of the open files/apps for that project together. Next time I access one of those files again, my workspace should come back just as I left it.
I know, I know--virtual desktops could do much of this for me, but the point is to develop a system that recognizes what I'm working on and organizes those virtual desktops accordingly and with little intervention.
Disclaimer: I have no idea if this is how they are going to do it, but it's definitely how I'd like to see it work.
Upon reading that title I immediately visualized a large ribbon-cutting celebration for the unveiling of a new cadaver factory, with an assembly line capable of pumping out an endless stream of high-tech corpses for all to enjoy.
$19k? How about a homebrew system using OpenEEG?

So who is going to be the first to make a homebrew mindball system using an OpenEEG interface?
You could probably build the entire thing for less than $1000 in parts.
While satellite Internet sounds attractive on the surface, the speed of light mocks you and your attempt at moving data with any reasonable respect for latency.
120ms for a one-way trip (@ ~36,000km orbit).. Your data has to get there and back, meaning 240ms minimum to your gateway. Include the reality of equipment inefficiencies and the average latency of actually accessing something across the Internet and you're reaching 400ms before you know it. A decent modem/PPP connection can get you to 80-120ms.
However, if the _bandwidth_ is high enough (say, that of a semi-truck or 747 packed with DVDs) and we had a decent (and easy to use) QoS system available, this could make a nice addition to your existing DSL/cable connection.
Use DSL/cable to start a transfer, system recognizes that it's one gigantic file transfer and moves it over to the satellite network.
People don't pay premium prices because of a Mac's color, or shape, but for the OS and interface. They expect the nice 'design' (in the "looks-nice" sense) because of the premium price, but are not paying premium solely for its looks.
Tell that to my teenage sister and the purple (original) iMac she asked--no, begged--my parents for as a Christmas present a few years back. Why? It was a popular/cool thing to get due to the "cuteness" factor.
Her #1 use for the thing was.. AIM.
Apple knows what they're doing. To most people, a computer is a computer--and without their smooth design Apple is just as much a part of that commodity market as anyone else.
I found a NEC MT1200 projector (800x600 native, 800 lumens) that was in "good physical condition, powers on, no lamp" -- so couldn't be tested further. $150 on eBay from some asset liquidator..
I took the risk, and luckily found a bulb for $150 a week later. The lens was smudged a bit--easily cleaned. When I tested the unit there were a few dead pixels, not really noticable with motion on the screen.
All in all, I think I did pretty well. Have it hooked up to my XBox (HDTV@480p->VGA converter) running XBox Media Center, streaming from a file server in a different room. $500 and the video portion of my home theater is taken care of (sans big HDDs that I store my DVDs on)..
I had a $6000 3000 lumens Mitsubishi XU300 a few years ago--this isn't *that* much worse. Lower native res and the curtains need to be drawn, but who watches movies in broad daylight anyway? And 800x600 is plenty for a standard DVD (720x480)..
Now just to get that second XBox up and backfed through the coax running in the walls already, and I'll have access to my library from every TV in the house..:)
Anyone who hasn't seen the "EZ-Jackster" episode of "The Proud Family" that Disney aired, should definitely try to hunt it down. (you can probably find it on your better P2P services;))
It portrays a girl using a P2P service (EZ-Jackster) to effectively bringing down capitalism as we know it. Even the news anchor loses her job and subsequently blames the girl and EZ-Jackster for it.
The entire episode touches on a controversial subject with subtlety of this satiric image.
In addition, almost all of what you're referring to can be configured by.rc/.conf files in the user's home directory -- which can be stored on a USB key, along with your favorite text editor. (They should be stored on a USB key in this manner -- so you can use the same home directory key across different live CD distributions;) )
"... an abundance of very fatty foods and a decrease in physical activity are among the causes."
Perhaps you meant an abundance of easily-accessible complex carbohydrates and refined sugars that allow our children to get a sugar high from every meal of the day.

I'm an Intel girl, in a Bill Gates world.
Bound in barbed wire, thrown in the mire!
You can bash my skull, I will be your gull!
[Chorus - Bill] Come on, Intel, visit my hell.
They did this in Broken Lizard's Club Dread (same group that made Supertroopers) -- it was easily the best part of the movie.

I don't know what you guys are complaining about, 80 wire taps for a penny seems pretty cheap to me. :P

Blood-sugar level spiking -> accumulative insulin resistance -> ineffective pancreas -> type-2 diabetes.
Please see how insulin works
