Replace 'Red Hat' with Nullsoft in that dialogue, and you have yourself a very compelling explanation for why they released netscape 6 so early in development...
What are YOU thinking? The people who make these shows get their reward - their yearly salary. The company that backed them gets their reward - tv ratings. It's only when they get to the stage that they release dvd sets and best of series that it goes beyong "reward" and becomes known as a process called "milking it".
Slashdot isn't just viewed by linux geeks. Many many people just surf this site as Yet Another News Site, on linux, mac or windows machines.
Think also about the people who come to this site from their school and work computer. I know that although I love linux and use it at home fairly often, i'm still stuck on a win 2000 machine in my network engineering classes...
This is rediculous! When I pay for music, I want to OWN the cd i paid for.
Who in their right mind would pay to rent a cd when they can buy it and own it forever? I know that when I go to blockbuster to pick up a DVD, i sure as hell won't buy it afterwards unless it's REALLY good.
I'm not trying to troll here, but I have strong doubts that Ximian will survive. But, before I continue, let me congratulate them on Evolution, as it is a very high quality product, and my preferred mail client.
From the newsforge article, quotes from Nat Friedman, vice president of product development:
"We expect less than we would have expected awhile ago. I think that people understand that businesses have to survive. And the people know that the bloody carcasses of Open Source companies line the horizon right now."
and
"It is proprietary is because they (Ximian) intend to make money from it."
Effectively what I see here is an admission that open source software just isn't getting the bills paid (at least for Ximian, and Eazel RIP), and that they need to sell proprietry software in order to keep afloat.
Unless we see open source companies like ximian generate significantly more revenue from services related to their open source projects, we just aren't gonna have the pleasure of using new products from them for much longer.
Most american companies use.com as their site. When you look at a web address, you look for the.au, the.uk, or other country code at the end. And if you don't see it, it's human nature to assume it's an american site.
I'm not experiencing this bug, on my athlon windows 98 machine. I've been using nightlies and milestone releases for the last few months on this installation of windows, same profile, and it's running like a dream.
What is faster - a large high latency level 1 cache, or a small but low latency level 1? Intel bet on the latter with pentium 4, having an extremely small level 1 but making up alot of performance due to the fact that it was single latency, as opposed to the Athlon which is either 2 or 3 cycle (?) Sun seems to think more along the lines of AMD. Have a large level 1, and hope that the sheer amount of stuff that fits in your level 1 makes up for the performance you lose due to the fact that it takes longer to actually access the data. Only in this case, Sun is going with a..... absolutely *huge* L1... interesting
It'll be very interesting to see how future processor designs go, if we do in fact see designs branch in different directions. Then again, it may appear awkward that i'm comparing x86 designs to SPARC, but seeing AMD will be hoping to compete head on using x86-64, i think it will be relevant. Especially considering the initial spec number published for Sledgehammer. 1400 in specint, WOAH!
Mandrake aren't allowed to distribute the nvidia drivers with their distro if I remember correctly. So what's the point of releasinga gamers OS when alot of the gamer's market will have extremely slow performance compared to their windows install?

You could've just copied the headline of the article to make the point.....

Maybe the fact that the interview was posted on MSDN makes it news again :)
AMD and SUN have reached the conclusion that MHz doesn't matter, because they're the ones that don't have the higher number.
Intel has NOT reached the conclusion that MHz doesn't matter. They're basing their marketting ON MHz because it is the only weapon they have left!
Preach on brotha!!!

yes it's not art that makes the game.
but why play a crap looking game when you can play a beautiful looking one?

The launch doesn't affect anyone because half the population has already been using it for freakin months
