CNET has an article, and suddenly it's news all over again? What I'm wondering, is why are people submitting stories for third party articles about stories or events were already linked to from slashdot?
Don't the submitters even look at the stories here anymore? Are people blindly submitting any new tech story on CNET, TheRegister, or Wired?
I was volunteered to evaluate application servers to replace what we had been using (New Atlanta's ServletExec).
Their main interest is in speed and scalability... and the $0 pricetag of Tomcat is also of interest to them (though not critical).
I've been testing Tomcat as well as Caucho Resin (www.caucho.com) and have found Resin to be much faster and feature rich, but my bosses are actually pushing for Tomcat because it's open source and free. I think mostly also do to the (hopefully) larger installed base so peer to peer support will be more of a reality.
BTW: Does anyone know a decent... free package that can script through a complex website (logins cookies, javascript) and load it down to test for performance? They want to see numbers of both of these and I have till friday!! eek.
...this will be pretty damn funny. I'm not really that worried since I know whatever they try will ultimately fail. There *IS* no perfectly secure system... haven't there been enough examples yet?
My only really paranoid fear is all this crap will eventually lead to the entire US as a Police state. Yeah ok, so thats a little extreme. But either they will just fuckin' give up already, or they will keep getting laws passed till you need to have goveremnt issued DRM compliant occular implants so you are deported from the country.
either way.. just toss a few linksys boxes in there tucked out of the way and you should be all set, depending on line of site between buildings. The spec is good to 300ft on standard gear. THough with stone walls, you may need to place the AP near a window to get enough signal through.
It's really sad. I'll play against my friend in games like Red Faction... and when he wins (like every time) he gloats forever about kicking my ass... then I challenge him to a real game of Urban Terror (Quake III Mod -- www.urbanterror.net) but he doesnt want to play.
I feel like a robot playing an FPS on on the controller. It's the same thing as playing a racing game... you wouldn't steer your car around town with left and right BUTTONS? So why would you try an aim a gun (and move around) with just directionals?
I'm sorry, but ever since I learned such tricks as circle-strafe and rocket-jump... I refuse to play without a mouse (and now I have "The Claw" as well)...
I just laugh at anyone who considers themselves a serious gamer, yet those games consist of Halo, and Max Payne (for PS2)... etc...
Blah... by the time this game comes out it will look about 50 times better with the latest GeForce 5 SUPER GTS PRO... which will cost the same as an XBox, so if you already have a decent PC... and dont have an XBox... which are you gonna choose? Hmm ?
The AC above me speaks the truth. mp3PRO has no hope of gaining enough market share to become a worthy competitor. It's a very proprietary extention to MP3. OGG being open source and free (as in beer) has clear advantages for hardware vendors (where it really counts). Lets hope the codec is easy to embed into portable products.
I want my Portable OGG CD Player! I'll buy the first one that comes out. Could you imagine? Twice the capacity of normal players and it STILL sounds better (or same capacity truly indistinguishable from CD -- at only 128k). Right now I have to encode my mp3's at ~180-220kbit to get something acceptable. =/
"Connection Refused"... it's slowly dying under load
So....

please mirror off this too, so my server doesn't melt...
Initially there were actually two meetups scheduled for Boston (one originally at Jillians for "Boston" proper), and the one at Gallery Cafe for "North Boston Suburbs"... which is rather ridiculous, so they were combined at the last minute.
Well out of the 80 listed on the page... we had a grand total of -five- people. It was still a good night, not entirely wasted. Much chit-chat about random crap ensued, which lasted a couple hours. Good food, nice view, not bad at all.
But next time don't sign up if you aren't serious about attending. Also, Gallery Cafe is nice, but I would suspect very hard to find and difficult to get to due to traffic at that hour. So please vote for a different venue next time.
And if I email you right now, to ask a question, you will not receive it either. Big flaw in my book.
I prefer spam assassin. It weeds out all the spam and places it into a seperate folder which I check for false positives on occasion. Spam assassin is great because it finds spam based on annoyingness and not who sent it. So if someone I know forwards me some "amazing offer" it will also be plonked. White lists dont work, unless you wish to exclude the rest of the world.

Anyway, it'll be nice to have some choice once they get it working. When I switched from Windows to Linux, one of the things I really missed was Winamp's minibrowser. XMMS could use that feature.
And BOOKMARKS... for god's sake... give me BOOKMARKS!
It's so annoying to have to open a web browser, go to www.shoutcast.com, search for the stream I want, and click on it... when I could just bookmark it within Winamp on windows...
Yes. But I couldn't justify the expense JUST for doing that, but that's the first/practical/ use I've read yet. CD clocks would look uber-l33t with graphics burned into them... but for added hack value, why not just put together something like a GIF2ISO... er, I mean PGN2ISO program so everyone can do it for free?
Problem solved, no need for a usable CD, it's just artwork =) No extra cost, just grab the free program.

If it runs linux, isn't it generally assumed it's programmable in by any conceivable method?

Which is it? Does it prevent it, or merely (like everything else) make it more difficult... meaning its eventually inneffective?

This should be fun, where do I get tickets?
I said someone else mirror this too! Yikes!
My upstream is now completely saturated. Woo-hoo!
It's going down in about 30min, so someone better make another mirror.

duh! It's roman numerals... the X stands for 10. It would just be OS 11 ... or OS XI.
Yeah, what else is new.. when's the last time you saw an original news peice on slashdot?
133.3KBytes/sec, just over 4min to download =) Seems to be holding up quite nicely.

I hereby propose the replacement to moore's law.
