  1. Quantum computing on SSSCA Squirms Forward Again Thursday · · Score: 2
Interestingly, quantum mechanical states cannot be cloned in general - this is the basis for quantum key distribution in cryptography. If the movie or whatever is transferred as a quantum state, physical laws are sufficient DRM. However, the problem is how to create and distribute these practically.

Yes, but the legacy goes on. The marketing suits wanted to maintain the crippled 9x user interface, while the underlying OS could have done so much better (rot1(VMS) = WNT).

Just because something is backwards compatible doesn't mean it's bad. There's a lot to be said about sensible design in the first place, so that future extensions don't break everything. This is my impression of why unix is still successful.

In some ways, Windows is still based on DOS, which was crippled to begin with. It was never intended to do multitasking or run servers.

Besides, when Windoze people note that my unix box is 'obsolete', the best word I can reply with is 'evolution'.

MPlayer with ffmpeg libraries for decoding (you'll add them into the MPlayer source tree, read MPlayer's manual). MPlayer must be compiled by yourself (for legal reasons!) but it is then fully optimized to your processor. It's one of the few programs that use MMX, 3DNow etc.

I'm getting fullscreen (800x600) DivX playback on a K6-3+, 400 MHz machine. In fact this is a recent achievement, because only with X 4.2.0 I have XVideo and DGA available. Without those, the VESA driver is probably the fastest.

Still I can't help thinking .. what if the power of Linux, proven superior in many other fields, could be harnessed to make da ultimate gaming machine.. :-] For instance, watching DivX and MPEG movies on my crap 400MHz box is much smoother under Linux, but that hardly stops people like you from whining.

Somewhat agreed. I've never been a big fan of chess, unlike many of my geek friends. Last summer I worked with people who were into chess, and I started playing with them and learning all the cool stuff.

At some point it occurred to me that you only win because the opponent makes a mistake. Not because you're better, but because they are worse. If you both know it perfectly, you always end up with a stalemate. This was a bit depressing, if you agree that learning chess is not about learning new things, but getting rid of mistakes.

On the other hand, more realistic games have no such limitations. You can develop your thinking and innovate without limits, progressing further all the time. That's probably why I'm studying physics... :-)

  18. Vorticity and speed difference on Black Holes Disputed · · Score: 3, Informative

Having studied basic fluid mechanics, I think the two explanations, via vortices and speed differences, are essentially equivalent. A vortex flow around the wing is equivalent to the velocity difference that is the usual explanation. If you compute the force either via the vortex effect, or via the pressure difference, you should get the same answer. The vortex approach is more sophisticated, so it is almost always the other explanation that is given to laymen.
