  1. An inflated ego or a better paycheck? on Microsoft or Google? · · Score: 1

This whole "god vs evil" thing is a load of crap. I know a lot of people who work for MS and a lot of people who work for Google. On either side you have your good and your bad. Both are companies. Both are very tough companies with very unrealistic demands at times. Go with the one that offered you the best deal. From what I hear, MS pays better and treats their employees like gold. Google pays **** and gives you free food and a bunch of tshirts.

Oh yeah, there's one thing you'll get from Google that you won't from Microsoft. An inflated sense of self. Nothing makes you feel better than everyone else than working for a company that's the antithesis of evil, right?

Mods: i'd rather be called a troll for this than humerous. please don't rate it funny. i stand by every word.

Why do I have these gas guzzlers? Because I love them. I don't drive them to get from point to point. I use them for that purpose, but I drive them because I love driving them. I love the way they sound. I love the way they feel. That doesn't make me an idiot. If I bought an ugly car with poor performance that saved gas and wasn't any fun for _me_ to drive, then I would be an idiot.

I've done a lot of IT related interviewing where I work and have flat out refused to ask these useless questions, despite the huge trend in this company towards these things. We've had a lot of really bad hires, in my opinion, that probably answered these questions perfectly. I've only had a hand in hiring one complete dud that I can think of and have never resorted to this. It's garbage. Ask me about what claim I know. Hell, you can even make up puzzles about what I claim to know. Does Google explicitly say that the licenses for the video codecs their using make it so they can't play them under Linux? Perhaps some of the large media providers they have deals with won't allow them to use a FOSS codec. Sure, the user uploaded files and things could probably be done that way, but I doubt the big studios want to make their videos completely open. For some, streaming is ok but downloading/copying/editing isn't and they might be trying to prevent that. But hell, you can almost always get codecs for your Linux box that will play the more proprietary formats anyway. (I don't know, I'm not much of a video watcher on my computer.)

For the punk rocker in me, I couldn't help but buy this Diesel watch (not the right color in the link). It's solid and heavy and is spikey. I really enjoy things with spikes...

A lot of people have suggested some really awesome watches. If money wasn't a consideration, there're definitely a few I'd go out and buy tomorrow. Since it is though, I've just gone for things that meet my functional requirement and I think look good (the Atari watch being an exception). They've all been under $200, keep great time and look good on my wrist. It used to also allow the option of reporting idle time based on gaim usage only (you could work on your computer all you want and it would consider you idle until you typed into a gaim chat window). If you don't want people to know whether your idle or ignoring them (don't debate it, you know you all use it to ignore people) then don't report your idle time at all.
