  1. amazing story on Public vs. Private Sector? · · Score: 1, Offtopic
"news for nerds. Stuff that matters."

What the heck is this? Someone can't figure out what to do with their life, and comes to the general population of the world for advice? What in the world does this have to do with news?

You know, there doesn't have to be a new article every 10 minutes or so. Can wait for like..real news stories, or things that people might be interested in.

working in the public sector is frustrating, and thankless. Working in the private sector is less so. In fact, for some people, working in the private sector is actually rewarding. Being in IT in the public sector isn't. Red tape like MAD. It really is true that the space shuttle still uses 386 chips all over due to all the hassles they'd have to go through to change the design.

Private sector also pays better. On the other hand, you're far less likely to get fired in the public sector. So if you suck, and have no plans on improving yourself, work in the public sector. Otherwise, private.

there is, of course, a seperate option...one that some one say is one or the other, but the culture is definately different enough to warrant its own category - Academia. Depends on what you want to do.

and isn't "it depends" the answer anyway? Yeesh. Its like you're asking "which is better to do this task I haven't defined? Assembly, C, perl, or java?" Well geeze...who knows? What are your skills? What do you want in life? How important is money to you? Is IT a career thing for you, or a job? There are far too many factors.

    what a silly "article." Bah

However, the *method* is specifically given, so unless the tables actually given in the patent itself are exactly what is being used, then it doesn't matter. This doesn't apply to anything and everything that compresses digital data. This applies only to the use of a specific algorithm, specifically described in the patent.

For those who haven't read the patent themselves yet, here it is: patent 4,698,672 . BTW, uspto.gov is suddenly not responding...heh. Guess they've been /.'ed... Keep checking.

Statistically we would say that there is not enough "power" to detect a statistical significance, because of this low-number sample.

How long has *nix been out? And no viruses? It is TOTALLY not improper to suggest, given its history, that it won't happen.

The only virus scanners for *nix simply scan data, so that systems that would be suseptible don't get infected. For example, a virus scanner running on a mail server, so that it catches viruses before users dl it to their vunerable clients.

Infect elf binaries? Yeah. Uh-huh. If I intentionally make it so, perhaps. But an intentional infection isn't something a scanner will help. If someone has rooted you, and is infecting binaries, they can just as easily keep the scanner from seeing any of it. At that point its a problem with the system having been rooted, nothing else. They could, instead of infecting a binary, simply alter things in a way that no "virus" scanner would catch. And ya know what? The ones you gota worry about are those anyway.

I know it just boggles your little lemming minds, but *nix systems simply aren't vunerable to viruses. Sorry...

Whatever, goof. When I was watching Episode 2, there was no generational lines. There were little kids, teens, "young adults," and old folks all in awe and loving it. Episode 2 was a great movie. It will survive in the theatres a while.

Spiderman, on the other hand, had only a 15-30 crowd, and then a crowd that *really* looked like it need to get a life. Not the same cross-generational appeal. It will survive a long while as well, but...its not going to be the kind of movie that you'll have your kids watch 20 years from now.

Episode 2 is also in like half the # of theatres as Spiderman. There is a reason for that, yes...but the reason doesn't change the fact that when I went and watched it (again) last night it was still sold out.

Was Spiderman better? Does what entrances and us change? I say no on both accounts. Spiderman was more fun (and allowed for actual acting, too!) but...it was more like just watching a goofy fantasy of sorts. Episode 2, beyond any "selling out" that Lucas has done (gawd I've been sick of that term for years) was still a great story. It was an adventure. And it was very good.

you are incorrect. Horses have a /very/ good use. The most expensive one runs faster than the fastest spell will allow, and the cheapest one runs a little faster than a non-speed buffed person can run.

"So what," you say? I haven't mentioned the best part. You see, you just picked up 1,000 stones of weight with your little enchanter, and he has a 75 strength. How the hell do you move? You summon your horse, and ride it all the way to a vendor.

Horses are very useful. They take care of being overburdened. They also keep you from losing stamina while running. Speaking as a player of a high-level high elf cleric with a base str of 60, this is a HUGE benefit. I'm hoping to afford even one of the cheapest horses soon, as it will allow me to carry stuff.

Which, btw...is going to backfire on Verant. There are LOTS of things that are left to decay simply because the person who could loot them can't carry the item. Now though, they don't have that issue. This, of course, increases item and money circulation, as there is no longer a need to destroy all copper, silver, and even sometimes gold due to being weighed down, and one can loot everything once they have a horse, instead of leaving it to decay on a corpse.

HEY..I got an idea...if you don't know what I'm talking about, then TRY DOING SOME RESEARCH

You see, vynil records used a sample rate of 48,000 (samples per second). CD's use 44,100. If you bothered to even glance through my post, I clearly said that a record's higher quality would only last the first few plays...after that, due to the whole physical contact thing (and being ground down by a diamond) a record loses its quality very quickly.
But yes...records have a higher sample rate. It matters not after playing it twice (then you just have lots of noise samples). If something was recorded at a sample rate of 44,100, trying to save it at a higher rate is pointless.

Here...since you obviously don't know how to look up "sample rate" in a search engine (do you know what a search engine is, little boy?) I've included a URL for you here. Think you can handle following a link?

Also, notethat in my first post I brought up on my own (thank you) that the media could never be better than the original...that was the very point of my post, idiot. If you're getting the signal from a TV station, there's no reason to squabble over quality...its already poor. Also, note that the whole "analog is better" arguement ends once a single conversion is made. If, at any point, its been converted to digital...then putting it back to analog is pointless. For "true" sound yes...analog is better. But its hard to find things that are analog and have never been digital.
And to make my point clear...how do you think most methods of saving video occur? Think its analog? Nope. Guess again. So your post is pointless. And...another clue for ya: digital can most certainly handle the quality of feed you get from your TV antenae
