I used CDE on Solaris because it is VERY VERY stable - sure gnome may be pretty - in fact it is my GUI of choice on Linux but on a stable OS I use a stable UI.
"The problem is there appears to be more interest in the Free Beer aspect of Linux versus Freedom. Mandrake is a perfect example they contribute a lot to Linux, but how many people are buying a distro to help support the company and the OSS programmers they hire. Software has value and people should pay for software in some way. Sweat equitity via codeing, QA, documentation, tech notes, or paying what they can afford by buying distro or contributing."
Absolutly spot on - someone with mod points mod this up.
I'd re-read the TOS in your contract with your ISP, I'd be very surprised if you can sue them in any circumstances at all. Otherwise it'd happen a lot more often wouldn't it? I'd imagine the only committment they make to you WRT inbound email is to make a "best effort" to deliver your email.
So you get a Linux system from IBM. Are you saying that IBM doesn't provide 24/7 support?
I think the point is that once you start purchasing the sort of hardware that you can get enterprise level 24/7 linux support on (ie not cheap x86 kit), your costs are creeping quite close to that of the Solaris solution you are replacing. Those IBM linux on mainframe things are NOT cheap, in fact they are (essentially) the mainframes that Sun originally started chucking out of the datacenter.
Its interesting that "the more things change the more they stay the same", isn't it?
Actually because in disk transfers are about 50% faster than transfers across the ide/scsi bus it more than makes up for the extra total number of writes, so its about the same speed on Linux and Solaris.
Its possible that you do no damage that has any noticable effects NOW. Its very likely that there is unperceptable damage, this can cause failures in the future. You can damage sensitive components even if you DON'T touch them if the static field comes into contact with them.
Anti-static precautions are something you should take very seriously.
John Peel - The man is a legend - he plays everything from punk to folk to trance, has been at Radio 1 since it was founded in the 60's and is literally a walking encyclopedia of music.
Listen to his real audio streams on the BBC website,
The Taliban was not the recognised government of Afganistan, the recognised government was that of President Rabbani who was deposed (and executed?) by the Taliban in 1997. The Taliban was recognised by Pakistan and Saudi Arabia. For more information Taliban by Ahmed Rashid is a good read, he met and interviewed Osama bin Laden, Mullah Omar and most of the prime protaganists in the recent conflict while researching this book

Its called a "corporate standard" for a reason.

Try to reassemble a BLANK sheet?
Are you sure - I'd imagine every shredder would fail that test!

How about "Because it would be outrageously expensive, and no one would buy it" ?
Even if it was the safest airplane in the world no one would pay the premium.

"Swatantryam"
Quote:
7.4 We wish to clarify that by the term 'Free Software' used above, we are referring to 'freedom', as in 'swatantryam' - not 'soujanyam'
Does that mean beer?
Alex
Thats about it,
Alex
"and I STILL forget that you need to edit 2 files to change the IP. (/etc/ifconfig and /etc/nsswitch)"
/etc/hosts to change a solaris boxes IP.
You are talking out of your arse.
You edit

Maybe because I don't draw pictures?

WTF is this on Slashdot for?

When you remove these components where are you going to put them? If you want to keep them safe, you will want the above.
/. thread about static - I'm shocked (but not surprised) that no one has mentioned this.
If in doubt read the preceding

How do you do OBP stuff on an x86 box?
This is the sort of stuff it is very handy to know in an emergency.
Alex
Brings a whole new meaning to "not supported", ;-)
Alex
Yeah I'm right with you there!
Fuck the Enron/WorldCom shareholders, pension holders, investors, creditors. Kenneth Lay should be lauded as a creator of wealth (his wealth).
We should let corporations do what they want after all they know best right?
Oh wait.....
Are you actually advocating zero government involvement with the economy, regulation etc? You haven't seen the news in the last 9 months right?
Alex
"Educate their citizens" - Isn't that called propaganda?
Sorry I forgot, us Europeans have governments which are slightly more immune to corporate pressure than other more arrogant nations/governments.
Alex
Raid 1 is NOT a reason to not have backups - disk loss is not the only thing to destroy data.
Though with a mirror you will get faster reads which is useful for a mail server.
Alex
An excellent post - one thing.

There are no composite Euro coins.
You are talking about the newer 10 Franc coin I believe.
