To all the manufacturers making these small, low-power PCs and notebooks I have one request. Please make the RAM expandable. Put an SO-DIMM slot in there, either in addition to the soldered-on system RAM or as the only system RAM.
512 Mb is nice, but being able to stick a 2 Gb SO-DIMM in there would make this system useful for so many more people than just their target audience.
Now that we're offtopic...what triggers the system? I've flown several flights where pilots have to go to the restroom so the cockpit door is opened.
Standard procedure there is:
1) Seatbelt light on; 2) Stewardess blocks access from cabin forward using the beverage cart; 3) Stewardess stands behind cart, watching the cabin; 4) Pilot comes out, uses the restroom, returns to the cockpit and everything goes back to normal.
Bill Maher did NOT have it right, he got the premise wrong. They're aren't screening people to protect the others on the plane, which is what his request would address. They're screening people with stuff to physically use the plane itself as a weapon. Are those people in the building they want to crash it into a part of Bill's grand scheme? Did he get waivers from all of them as well?
Because they realize they are not 100% effective, so if they throw the stuff away they are covering all their bases. A single mistake won't result in a catastrophic failure.
2) Thanks! I didn't know anything about the iPod file format, so was afraid to start doing things like that. In truth, I was looking for an excuse to go to an Apple store. I'd never been in one and was curious. In hindsight, I probably shouldn't have worn the "Dell" t-shirt and the "Linux" baseball cap. I got lots of dirty looks.:-)
3) After Apple restored it I had to reinstall everything again anyway. No love there.
4) It wasn't unplugged while mounted. It was spontaneous. One evening it worked, the next morning nothing. No computer interface in between. Strange.
The iPod was purchased with the intention of putting Rockbox on it. As it turns out, I do not like the click-wheel interface. Yes, Apple fans, I'm in the minority, but I still don't like it. It was given to my daughter to play with and moved lower on my priority list to convert.
I'm in the process of getting a Toshiba Gigabeat, again with the intention of putting Rockbox on it.
Most of my music is in.OGG or.FLAC format, neither of which the iPod can handle without conversion. Amarok does conversion on the fly, which is slick.
Because if your iPod has a nervous breakdown -- and there is a good chance it will -- only iTunes as the "Restore" button. Amarok can't restore a corrupt database and wil just refuse to work with the iPod. Time for a trip to the Apple store.
Now, if there is a nice FOSS "iPod Restore" tool, that would help. Integration into Amarok as a plugin or something would be even better.

My experiences with Comcast in the Western 'burbs of Chicago.
1. Initial setup was they absolutely insisted on having me use a Windows PC to run the setup software. This didn't install anything, but did activate the cable modem. When I told them all I had was Linux, they offered to do it manually but that would "take a couple of weeks". In reality it took about 24 hours for the request to go thru the system.
2. Every time since then, when ever I've seen them do an install or troubleshoot, they don't even bother to ask. The techs bring their own laptop and use their own equipment.
3. Their homepage (comcast.com) refuses to let me log in to check/pay my bill if I use anything but IE on Windows. It just sits and spins with Firefox (Windows or Linux) or Konqueror.
4. Their "Digital Voice" crapped out every time someone got online with something else. You MUST have their premium service to get the 768 Kbps upstream, or do nothing else while you're on the phone, or it won't work. 384 Kbps is standard, and it sucks for voice + anything else. I've since migrated to Packet 8 and have had no issues, even going thru Comcast.
Do Once 1. Need to download the two.RPMs from Epson's site. 2. Change RPMs to DEBs with Alien 3. dpkg -i to install DEBs 4. Modify the/etc/sane.d/sane.conf and dll.conf files to include Epkowa and comment out Epson
Do Every Time 1. Figure out which USB port it was assigned, then change the appropriate permissions in/dev/bus/usb or only root will be able to use it.
Also, if Apple prevents you from using your own MP3s as ringtones, I bet it's because at&t and the labels wanted a cut. I don't know anything about this specific deal, but practically every ringtone sold in the US cuts the carrier in somehow, and being able to sell ringtones at all requires striking some sort of deal with record labels.
No, just about any phone that supports MP3 ringtones allows you to set any MP3 as a ringtone. This has nothing to do with the carrier. My Motorola SLVR allows me to pick any sound on the phone, including full-length MP3s, for a ringtone. I've done the same with a RAZR and several Nokias.
I'm not criticizing. I'm just trying to point it out to some people who think Apple is their benevolent buddy, and are doing this for the greater benefit of humanity. Steve Job, and Apple by proxy, is a control freak extraordinaire.
Apple is NOT your friend, and they are NOT trying to bring about a revolution for the little guy. They are trying to worm their way in to every possible aspect of getting your money. Why do you HAVE to go thru iTunes to set a ring tone? Why can't you just use an existing MP3 that you downloaded/copied over to the phone? Because Apple doesn't get a cut that way.
The phone is not unlocked because Apple gets a cut of the service from AT&T. The phone will most likely only be unlocked when Apple negotiates a cut from the other GSM service providers.
You had this problems with a server? I find this hard to believe.
One of the basic questions Dell support asks when you call is "what OS is installed on it". They have a Linux dept, so you probably got shunted to the wrong place.
I've purchased hundreds of Dell PowerEdge servers with no OS, then had Debian installed. I've NEVER had them give me grief on anything I've needed to call about. They like to have Dell Diags run first, but I've had them service equipment on both overnight and 4-hour contracts, both at the office and at customer sites.

Do what I did and buy two. If you're going to argue, at least pick something worth arguing over. Television isn't worth the expended energy.

No, they maintain a separate "GnuTunesDB" but do have files to keep that in sync with the iTunesDB. Interesting.
1) It automounts already. :-)

I believe this was fixed in 3.2. In any case, with the most recent version of KDE (3.5.6) I can't click above the menu bar.

Is it free crack day for moderators on Slashdot? Did I miss something?
Seen death, not caused death. Thestrals simply would be visible since he was present at her death. Causing it would be irrelevant.

Does it come with a get-out-of-jail free card?
Does it automatically pick up any open hotspot, or do they have to be pre-configured?

But will it play Halo 3? If it plays Halo 3, then I'll get one.
By limiting the iPhone to a 30-second clip and requiring you to use their ringtone converter, at $0.99 a pop?

Of course it will PLAY, just not as a ringtone unless you get it and set it thru iTunes at $0.99 a track.
