Anyone thinking that major school systems are unaware that they are purchasing sub standard portable buildings needs to rethink the issue. Usually the larger school systems know full well when the are buying junk. After all school boards employ all buildings trades people and have decades of experience. If the more civilian type of board members vote they may well be in the dark over trades issues. South Florida, a frequent hurricane target, has had portable class rooms completely fall apart that were only a year or so old when they attempted to move them a few feet. You can bet your last penny that someone in the schools system trades departments has green lighted these purchases and that they either get kick backs directly or get a plush job when they leave the school system. The size of many school systems is such that organized crime gains entry and can skim off the top without fear of punishment.
Past expectations and predictions upon science, technology and society have been pretty off the mark. The majority of quality, new, breakthrough technologies never come to fruition. For example we have seen battery breakthroughs every month or so but the actual sales of these new designs is slow, low or nonexistent. After all investors are frightened when an investment might become obsolete before returning any profits. Social conditions stop a lot of progress and a really lousy economy stops even more.
In the mean time the public counts on technology saving them from the brink of disaster when in fact technology might cause even greater disasters. At the root of all of these problems is excessive reproduction. Too many people generate too many problems. The denser a population gets the more laws and regulations must be imposed upon the whole. The expense of enforcement of all the rules and laws tends to turn the entire system on its ear. Our legal system became a savagely rude joke. Our cures become our curses . Our poorly educated population, ignored and mistreated becomes nothing more than a liability waiting to happen. All is not well and the British are not coming.
Suppose I want to vote for a senator or a president. One wants to increase military and defense funding and the other wants to decrease the funding. Considering the degree to which defense and the military have how does my vote have meaning? The ability to make an informed choice does not exist when one can not be informed? When I see places like Afghanistan or Iraq or even Korea I do wonder if we have a military capable of protecting the nation. Remember when the 9/11 tragedy was playing out and we could not scramble armed fighters as we had no armed fighters available? I remember seeing the German air force called in to protect reactors in Florida. That was pretty sick.
Easy fix : If the sound and pressure wave of a gunshot issues from a vehicle the vehicle auto stops and locks up until the cops arrive. No more drive by shootings allowed.
We already have drones that can make perfect landings on the deck of a bouncing aircraft carrier without human input. Things are changing very quickly. I suspect that the only snags we really face for robotic automobiles is public acceptance and the cost of the systems. This is a disruptive technology that promises to eliminate millions of jobs. It is also a wonderful technology that can save us a lot of grief. Electric cars threaten the mechanics existence, the continuation of GM, Ford and Chrysler and a huge segment of the parts industry as well. With an electric car exactly what on the shelves of your local Auto Zone store are relevant? If you combine the loss of jobs for taxi, truck and delivery drivers with the replacement of the traditional auto industry you are looking at a very painful transition. It also goes without saying that the oil industry will fight all of this progress as well.
This points to a flaw in capitalism. We expect our economic entities to push forward and be uplifting. Yet the reality is that the number of entities with cash that will resist progress points out that there is a downward pressure to prevent progress even when saving human life and natural resources is at stake.
When we ride a bicycle the brain constantly adjusts for error. We try to travel in a straight line but it really is a series of small curves as we adjust and keep trying to track straight. Processes such as vision probably do the same thing. As we quickly try to identify items it probably turns into a "this not that" series until the brain eventually decides we have gotten it right. Obviously this all occurs constantly and at rather high, internal, speeds.
An autonomous car should not allow human input. It should come to a stop if the controls fail and remain stopped until help arrives. This is perfect for getting kids to school and picking them up from school as well. We might even be able to eliminate school buss drivers.
We do have the technology to spot mental illness in school kids and even in employment situations. There are two facts involved. First, real testing is expensive and requires specialists including things like PET scans, MRI scans and a full medical workup in addition to psychological testing. Then the next problem is even worse. You have little Johnny in the seventh grade and his behavior seems a slight bit off. You test him which might cost 20K and determine that he in fact has a mental illness. And here comes the fun part. You have to treat him and there is no way in this world that most states or nations will fund half way good care for mental illness. So everybody looks the other way and pretends that Johnny is just a bit different or going through a stage. The catch is that in the tenth grade little Johnny's mental health is now totally wrecked and he thinks his high school should be just like Columbine. How many of us know people right now who have somewhat obvious mental health issues? And often these folks will not talk about it and may become quite hostile if you ask them to seek help. I have worked with people that I was not at all sure would not shoot up the business as their mood swings were more than a little sick.
I enjoyed DOS and in particular IBM PC DOS. And we could do a lot with it. Even if we went back to the 386 era I'll bet that there could still be lots of software improvements that were never exploited.
Florida has a lovely python population and they can be eaten or made into boots. We have tilapia in abundance. We have the the snake head fish from the orient as well as peacock and rainbow bass and also some species of piranha. I welcome all of these invaders. We also have armadillos and iguanas both of which also are good eating. All in all i want more. I wish the jumping silver carp as well as the big head carp would invade Florida big time. Poison toads are killing a few pets but other that and one nasty, African snail that can actually eat the plaster off your exterior walls i tend to love the exotics. They are fun to catch and some get really large. And we don't even want to get into the good things that Kudzu vine can do if properly used. We have invasive bamboos which are also wonderful.
Some items seen to be a curse tend to become valued. The dreaded zebra mussel in the Great Lakes has become a great food source for sturgeon and the water is cleaner for having them. Lampreys were cursed and considered an emergency and now people cook and eat lampreys.
Frankly i think the fight against most invasive species simply creates jobs for public employees.
Maybe we can get enough DNA to bring back these big birds. But then again it seems like our society screws things up. Remember the ostrich craze? People spent huge sums to get ostriches under the theory that an ostrich ranch was the next big thing. Supposedly businesses just could not get enough ostrich parts and the meat was going to be a big seller as well. The price of an ostrich passed 80K.. But none of us are seeing ostrich meat at the markets. I wonder how many millions were lost on the ostrich scams. The earth worm scam preceded the ostrich scam. People invested a lot of money getting supplies to start farming worms in warehouses. they were told that that the shampoo industry used protein from worms and all were told they could make a fortune with the worms doing the work.
It is sad to confront the fact that we consider it normal to tax people for owning a home or land. Things are so over the edge that when a family member dies we must pay $15. per death certificate and many people will need several as copies are not always acceptable. Now there is some real evidence that traffic tickets are a serious form of taxation which we pay on top of the sales tax on the car, the taxes on gasoline, as well as taxes on tires and repairs, with toll roads gobbling up even more.
It begins to look more and more reasonable to live outside the system.
I wonder if they can shield these drones against an e-bomb. In a way if you knock out navigation while a drone is over friendly areas you turn the drone into a random, terror, device. I suspect that trying to shield a drone from an e-bomb would be very difficult. Apparently the Air force is able to shield war planes against electronic shock but they have many redundant systems whereas drones might not be able to carry all of the shielding and backup systems.
When we invaded Iraq we probably had an e-bomb capacity that could shut down every car with almost any kind of electronics. In a high traffic city the congestion would be a real problem for mobilizing their military. It is not as if all those cars and trucks would start after a while. They would all need repairs.
The only answer is to post the pics all over the net and that way you can view them anytime you like or send copies to her family and new boyfriends. After all you can't give back copies already distributed.
First if we just have to execute people (which we don't) then it should serve some purpose. Public executions have always been greatly attended as entertainment. Perhaps if we did it in the school yards with the children watching we might discourage them from future crimes. But oh no! We simply have to turn it into a huge ritual involving a lot of people and a whole pile of big bucks. Prisons close all roads for miles around before an execution. There have to be vigils, witnesses, wardens, doctors, technicians and a ton of nonsense.
A simple and easy way to do an instant execution and assure no pain at all is felt is to ask the inmate to suck on the barrel of a twelve gauge shotgun. A click of the trigger and he will never feel a thing. His brains and half of his head will spray many feet behind him. His lungs will explode. His blood pressure for a moment will be so high it can't be measured. His belly will explode from the shock wave as will his kidney's, bladder and liver.
Painless and instant death for the cost of one shotgun shell. Now with a pig pen full of captured, wild pigs just toss the corpse in their pen and his body will vanish in no time at all. Alternately a gator pit could do a great job as well. Easy, peasy and not at all sleazy, we can send these folks to the next life with great ease.
In all seriousness if an employer operates without prejudice they may be unaware of the race, sex or ethnic group of employees either individually or in total. Should an employer send someone around to ask Juan whether he is from Portugal or Some Spanish nation? Should he ask Juan if he is really a male or a female or transgender person? How about asking if Juan is a Jew or a Catholic? And if Juan looks black but has white grandparents and one white parent he can define himself anyway he likes as there is no official standard for what black means.
In small companies the employer may know these things due to close contact with employees. But in large companies or companies that hire work at home people they may have no clue about any of these things.Isn't asking those types of questions an illegal invasion of privacy in itself? What's next? Should employers ask for proof of such questions? How about drop your pants Juan I want to make certain you are a male? You just know that some very dumb employers will find ways to screw up in reporting this stuff.
Schools are eliminating teachers' jobs already and using computers in their place. Obviously teachers won't feel good about computers. Classes in Spanish or French are now often without teachers. Imagine one computer program teaching every eight grade US history course in the nation. To a bean counter there is no better way to go. And we will see brick and mortar schools start to become a lot less common as a very real option of home schooling by computer emerges. Social chaos may result. Stable homes are required for a child to do well in home learning. One parent or at least one caretaker need be present to assure the child stays in place and does their work. Poor folks have man and wife working and divorced or single parent homes have no way to get this done. Yet those who are in a more stable lifestyle will deeply resent and fail to properly fund traditional schools for what they see as losers.
Sadly greed and crime have held up home learning with the various pseudo schools and colleges offering defective diplomas at high prices causing a distrust of online education. A remedy is governmental control and oversight of commercial education offerings and strict accreditation requirements by one approved accrediting body.
The poet Perce Besse Shelly played around with reanimation or making the dead come to life. Animal parts were normally used for people playing around with making the dead come to life but Shelly was wealthier than most poets and could probably get a freshly dead human corpse to apply the shock that made them twitch. His wife Mary Shelly who created the Frankenstein novel probably was using images she had seen first hand in experiments done by Shelly. The chances are that Perce Shelly was the real and authentic Dr. Frankenstein.
So after a couple of centuries we now only make life like copies of our friends instead of trying to bring them back from the dead.
By the way, in some public demonstrations corpses actually sat up when a shock was applied. Imagine people who had no real understanding of electricity or anatomy beholding a corpse sitting up suddenly.
Think about it. If you were in an organisation at any level and other members of the organisation tended to just explode suddenly wouldn't you want out? Would you want your friends and family members signing on?
Our only real problem with drones is that we should be using far, far more drones that carry lethal pay loads. I'll bet there little terror training camps would shrink quite a bit if drones hit five or six times every day or night. And the cleric in the mosque preaching that all Americans must die might make a great impact when he exploded while preaching.
In war one must be more menacing and perhaps more brutal than one's opponents.
Many of us grew up in an era in which everyone got the same TV shows and that was it. Then things started to diverge. A few people got color TVs which seemed to work poorly and wear out way to fast but these folks got to see things that most others did not due to color. Then came cable TV. All of a sudden content was locked to the size of your wallet. Then we had premium channels as well as pay per view. Also some cable companies started to offer higher speed services for more money. Now we also have HD channels which require a more expensive TV. Denial of equal content is so dangerous to a nation that I should not have to define the issue. But it is all too real. By the way in my two there is zero TV without cable or satellite service and I am between two large metropolitan areas but both point their broadcast antennas away from our town as they fear interfering with each other.
Why not a small, strong parachute to start the slowing followed by progressively larger parachutes? If we are considering only brake shoes or pads then I would think ceramic with some embedded metal pieces might be the way to go. If pre-warmed the ceramic should hold together nicely.
I worked early on developing very complex robots. They were destined for Colleges and had arms weighing about 300 lbs. that moved at about the speed of the end of a golf club. We tried to take every precaution as every now and then these arms were known for turning a human head into something that looked like a watermelon dropped from a sky scrapper. We didn't have to get into trying to program morality at all. We did use a lot of safety mats with sending units that shut down the arm if a human entered the work area. Aspiring, young engineers do need to survive their college lab courses.

Maybe I'm as dumb as a rock but this article doesn't make much sense to me. Maybe a bit more info about trimers would have helped.
