Einstein said something like "I know not with what weapons World War III will be fought, but World War IV will be fought with sticks and stones."

With the actual problem in Middle East (and possible consequences) maybe the next war will be really a Junkyard war.

  2. Page thumbnails on Building a Better Back Button · · Score: 1

Maybe is just me, but looking that page thumbnails I will tend to force my eyes to get more details of what I viewing, this could cause more visual fatigue?

Also in the scheme where you go a -> b -> c -> d <- c <- b and then the browser history state results of [a, d, c, b] could lead to some non clear transitions (i.e. the back page of d is a) if I don't misunderstood, that can be more confusing.

Anyway, middle mouse button + browser tabs + maybe mouse gestures + a bit of common sense seems to improve a lot the defects of poor back button design.

But there is not punishment to the one that patented the wrong thing?

Lets assume that I patent something very used but not patented, and start asking licences to everyone. Until someone decide to lose more money than my licence and get me to the courts, I only win, and after that (if a prior art or in the court emerges that my patent or claims are unreasonables) I only stop wining, nothing more, but don't lose a penny in all of this.

I wonder why all "make rich fast!" schemes don't include patenting common sense or widely used ideas and technologies, you can't lose with that.

Last friday here Microsoft had a meeting about Shared Source. I had the funny idea about going with the printed version of shared-source.com to give them a bit of work, but found that the domain was down, and even if I could make my own points against shared source, between not having something with stronger basis and that was early in the morning, well, I missed it.

  9. Inertia on The Future of Money · · Score: 1
Maybe an evolution of what was covered in this previous slashdot story would be the right thing. Is anonymous, requires not so high tech, and in the current form is in use in several countries. To be more practical maybe it should be not so "dumb" as actual smart cards, maybe providing a way to transfer money from card to card directly and safely (PDAs?)

But still will be based in the way we see money today, even if exist better conceptual ways to give value to work, ideas, etc, the actual economy is very based in the money per se, not in actual value of things.

The other thing I believe that could change (maybe in more than 25 year) is some way of unified money and values around the world, that the same product cost the same anywhere (in similar amount of hours of work or something like that, no mean US dollars)

If you have several authors then each one could focus in what is more specialized. Open Source as a philosophy could have one author if you want, but the use of open source in several fields have to be several, unless you have a good writer specialized in each one of possible fields.

In the other hand, an evolutive work could be better than the work of a single person... think in open source software, and the strenght of being developed by a large community.
