KDE file dialog currently allows to fully personalize the left pane entries, adding new ones (global and per app) and erasing the standard ones.
Also you can deactivate it if you wish, and can even choose a unified file/dir view a la Win95, or a separated one Win3.1 style.
Of course, Gnome fans dislike configuration options, so I guess they do not care all this so much. Everyone likes the way everyone likes...
BTW, "registerable" common dialogs should be a nice feature... I mean, a way the user/distributor can choose what dialogs use an app, whatever tk/de it is based around. Could freedesktop.org set some proposal to do this? It seems no harder than some efforts they are already involved.
Graphical designers do not work in that way. They are not nerds proud of watching blondes in the Matrix streams. They care about a lot of things nerds do not care, like proper use of fonts, colors, etc. That is what they are good in.
They fit Photoshop art in nested tables with lots of cells. Unless you have great abilities viewing the final results in your mind, it's a lot easier using Dreamweaver than vi.
And they are not nerds, and care about a lot of things we don't when editing pages.
Again, I agree, it's good to be able to write HTML. But there is much more people beyond hardcore nerds close mindset. And I used to be one, ten years ago.
I coadminister a network with 150 stations and ten servers. I also set up several boxes freelance, and most people considers me a proficient professional.
And, if you are able to read, I have no trouble using vi for my own stuff.
OTOH, I presume you do not have any idea of the economical and social situation here, and why I have or have not such job.
Do you *ever* saw the complex layout of professional crafted, graphical designer authored web pages? It is almost impossible to do such things with a text editor, you need permanent visual feedback and visual editing.
It is good to be able to write HTML by hand. I do my own (simple) pages by hand, and I blame designers I worked with when their tables were inadequate to fill them with PHP code. But claiming that there is no need for good graphical HTML editors (Dreamweaver is the only one that currently really rates as good, BTW) is a nonsense.
I feel tablets are cool, however, I think, you either want a notebook computer with detachable keyboard, or a PDA like device with larger screen.
A PDA with a DIN A5 screen could be cool. Think about it: Notebooks (the real thing) come in various sizes, from very small ones to larger ones, with Letter or Legal size.
Current PDAs just are comparable to those smaller notebooks. Tablets are more like bigger ones, but they aren't PDAs. They are full fledged expensive portable computers.
Do you want to sell computing devices with big screens? Take my advice: Do not pretend to put into them much more power that into a PDA, neither charge them much more than for a PDA.
And of course... PDAs are still expensive, even when are fading from the market. The reason is clear, besides the advantage of phones with PDA capabilities... How much paper and pencils you can buy with $200-$500?
Conclusion: If you want big volume of sales, let the prices fall. Keep away from useless aggregate value (XP).
No. Gnome HASN'T focus. Is was created just because some RMS friends didn' t like the QT license. Now its all about UI usability. Then it passed along three window managers, and two file managers. Started using the ultraconfigurable Enligthenment hog, just to finish with the dead dumb Metacity. Is that focus? Nautilus was supposed to be the counterpart of Konqueror, and become also the web brower, but for some reason they relegated it and left Mozilla/Galeon as browser... Is that focus? They used to talk about Abiword+Gnumeric as the Gnome office suite (BTW, Abi people never Abiword as a Gnome app, in fact is a multiplatform app). Later, they claim OO is their office suite. Is that focus. In the same line, I do not understand how they think external multiplatform developments as Abi or Moz fits in a supposedly usability aware, consistent desktop.
That said, I like some Gtk/Gnome apps, as some KDE apps sucks (Kpresenter y Kivio specially). But still I think Gnome is well behind and most of its backers use it just because it is a more RMS-politically-correct project.
With the efficiency of spam filters and widespread use of blacklists and such, how can the spammers actually make any money? It's logical that they (the spammers) should try to bring attrition to the defenses of mail servers.
There are cases. I know an ISP who provides both mailboxes for its customers and also free webmail.
But they let all the spam to get in, because they sell antispam features as extras. I wonder if that really pay them off, as I guess thousands of megabytes of daily spam in their links and disks cannot compare with a few subscribers paying the antispam fee.
The processor is in charge or display refresh (some software disables it in order to use full power).
But the worst part is, most internal software is written in Sys-RPL. Sys-RPL is a lower level of User-RPL, the built-in programming language. It is faster that User-RPL because you can avoid type/stack checking between operations, however it is still a slow interpreted beast in a little 2MHz (G's had a 4?) processor.
For the HP49, however, HP hired talented 48's hackers, and has most software rewritten in assembly.
How does affects the increasing of clock speed, in order to get a smoother multitasking, specially in older machines?
Currently, the clock ticks at 1KHz, vs the older 100Hz frequency... This means, a lot more time spent in context switching... As the clock freq is independent of CPU speed, is has greater impact in such cases.
I still have to work with 3+ y.o. computers (My own is 5 y.o). How much gross degradation that means?
I want to note that all NT based Windows versions, at least since 4.0 are vulnerable.
This means, this hole was sleeping from years, it could exist since late 1995 or earlier, if it wasn't introduced into NT4 in a SP.
This means, also, people had a giant security issue along seven years, waiting for somebody to exploit it.
I'm not sure how open source software can be affected in similar ways (anybody remember any case out there?), but I feel better thinking that open source allows a faster cycle for bug and vulnerability depuration.
Well, I live in Argentina. Yours is really a fine, senseful advice, madman!!!
Anyway, blacklisting is a hard bussiness to be in. I know THE blacklist guy in Argentina, its server was in our university datacenter... However he was to move out, as unfortunately the university can't stand three days spans without mails or any kind of remote access.
Sorry dude, RMS doesn't drink beer as far as I remember. People in my LUG were very disappointed when we couldn't share a beer with him, three years ago. OTOH, I guess he we'll be happy if you give him a good (especially exotic) tea.
The fact is, Slackware is a very barebones distro, The Slackware way is the DIY way, there are no config tools and *unstandard* config files to keep care of. I guess only Rock Linux goes beyond Slack in this matter. Then, usually it is easier than other distros to make it fit for your needs, of course, if you know what are you doing.
Microsoft spokesmen said earlier that Linux kernel broadcast is a challenge, so Microsoft is going to broadcast all the source of Windows XP Professional in WMA format. When asked about why they will disclose the sources in this way, the official response was: "Any moron at all will bother hearing that, anyway"
As a reasonably young guy (26, undergraduate), I only heard/saw date problems for pre-1900 people before Y2K problem took hype. But, as the whole Usenet thread shows, there were a lot of people aware of that kind of problems, even before 1985. So, why take to mid nineties to become a real question? I guess all new software development should be Y2K aware by 1990!
If fact, if this is the same thing I saw a time ago, it didn't emit anything. I ran in with Wine, it didn't call any sound function. With an old soundcard that has a mixer program with vu-meter I didn't it generating anything neither.
Pike programming language (underused but very nice indeed, I prefer Pike to Java) comes from version 0.6 to version 7.0

Yeap. I had no contact with newer versions of Delphi since 4, but "Data Modules" was one of the most stupid concepts I ever saw.
An invisible window to layout non-visual components into? It's a messy thing!!! Visual tools are ok when they make sense.
Something similar to a Tables/Queries/Forms tabs in Access, would be much better.
That is right for you and for me.

Just MHO.
NT was widely blamed because of its stability, leading to poor uptime, as most servers ran a week or so.
Newer Windows are very improved, but the uptime is short anyway, as you are patching the OS all the time.
No.

The 48's slowness is because:

I guess that I believe nearly 90% of Windows machines are running in Microsoft offices!
;)
(Of course, there are another 5% of Windows computers that are used two times a week

Didn't they go further? Those where launched a while before Voyagers... Is it a speed matter?
