For those Mac OS X users out there, have you noticed operations that seemed slower using Mac OS X compared to similar operations on other operating systems?
In the time it takes to switch from Mac to Windows XP, switching from Windows to Mac has been done many times over...and the switch from Mac to Windows actually FAILED!
How about drawing the line between liberty and safety at that spot where it isn't necessary to give up one for the other. We shouldn't have to give up liberties to feel safe or give up safety to feel free. There are numerous alternatives to the invasive procedures that Congress is allowing/considering. Maybe starting with better communication within the government agencies that feel as though we should be stripped of OUR liberties to make THEM feel safe.
Here's what the American Library Association has to say about all this. I seem to remember reading about a situation about 20-30 years ago in which a librarian would not give up information and went to jail for a short while either for obstruction of justice or contempt of court. I can't find the article at the moment, though.
Did you happen to read the questions posed/points made in the second article? Microsoft PAID for this benchmarking. Throw in a beta of.NET, a J2EE Petstore implementation coded as an example for using all functions, a.NET Petstore implementation coded for performance (by Microsoft, no less), and yes, I'd say that the first article isn't newsworthy, but the second one is.
Step 1: Collect underpants Step 2: Retrofit new internet connected touch/feel sensors to underpants and sell them as package upgrades for www.hotgnomesex.com Step 3: Profit!
You do realize that they aren't planning on gathering in an area and seceeding, right? They're simply trying to empower a state with the rights granted to it via the 10th Ammendment.
In a related story, Robert Novak of Pets Warehouse has been hired to represent Addonics Technologies, Inc. in a lawsuit against Slashdot posters for speaking out against their new IDE-SCSI and ATAPI-SCSI converters. Among those being prosecuted is a Slashdot member known as "The Iconoclast" for falsely claiming that the products cause, among other things, "Plague, Pestilince and Famine." No word from God yet on whether or not the Four Horsemen are coming and the Apocalypse is truly upon us.
is how in the second pdf file http://www.xvid.org/v1_1_comparison.pdf there is a 16-iteration loop in the XVID code and the code for the loop is simply copied 16 times in the Sigma code. That doesn't sound like something a compiler would do on purpose.
This seems like such blatant plagiarism it's disgusting.
The Chicago Police Department has announced that kidnappings in the Greater Chicago area are on the rise. Within hours of an announcement from a Chicago company claiming to be able to make diamonds out of human remains, hundreds of missing person reports have flooded the emergency response systems of Chicago.

I wonder how much the monthly charge is going to go up just to cover that poor barn getting Slashdotted.
Elsewhere: Authorities are looking into web-related assissted suicides and their connection with the Slashdot community. One of the most recent and haunting Slashdot-assissted suicides involves a poor distraught I-Paq being abused to run a webserver. The I-Paq posted on slashdot under its owner's username and linked to itself. The large community of thousands of members began surfing to the handheld and within the hour, the poor thing was dead.
In a related case, a webserver being kept in unfit conditions in a barn located in Colorado wrote in to Slashdot under a username suspected to have been stolen from one of its users. Once again, the chilling "Slashdot effect" has killed this webserver.
Members of the Slashdot community claim innocence, claiming that they all have a right to connect to the webservers linked to on the Slashdot site, regardles of the end result. In the words of one Slashdot member, "If my viewing of content on a site contributes to the taking down of that site, so be it. Especially if the webserver has posted about itself in the hopes that it gets slashdotted! If the server wants to die, it would go against its rights to not allow it to. I'm just helping the cause."
I'm aware of that...I didn't complete my thought process though, which was that there are a lot of species that became extinct as a direct result of humans that should be repopulated.
there had BETTER be a very simple HUD with just some feedback on stats like energy, life, etc. It's a cool concept and seems like it might make things a little more realistic since you've actually got the control board in front of you instead of just seeing it and punching keys cooresponding to items on the CB (although I think I'd rather learn key commands than where each independent button is).
A lot of people are saying that this species, among others died off for a reason. If that's the case, however, wouldn't they be destined to die off again once we bring them back? There are quite a few species out there that were driven to extinction by humans during a time when we didn't really think much about natural conservation.
The only thing that might bother me about this is if I were a parent. My guess is that a lot of the people that are up at arms about this are people that don't know all the details. This is less of an invasion of privacy than popup or popunder ads!
Since your programs get precedence, their program is listed at the bottom, their program is not in your 40 hour buffer, and their program does not require you to watch it, I can't really find another problem besides the lack of parental control over their program.
This just in: It seems top executives of Sanford, makers of the widely-used Sharpie felt-tip pens, and Avery Dennison, makers of the ever popular Marksalot markers, are dumping their stocks. This follows the recent findings that the two products just mentioned, when properly used in conjunction with human hands, can be used to circumvent the copy-protection of several CDs that have recently been released. The heads of both companies have supposedly been aware of the potential for legal action to be taken against the prodcuts since the discovery of the copy-protection workaround, yet both continue to pump out millions of pens. Former Sanford employee Emily Frankins has come forward claiming to have been fired after threatening to alert officials to the shredding of memos containing valuable information regarding the pens. The shredding of memos to higherups in the company concerning the obvious lack of respect for the law has supposedly been going on for the past week.
In a related story, God continues to argue with authorities in the ongoing investigation of human hands. God claims that the human body is modular only to some extent and that it would not be feasible for Him to remove hands from all people. Government officials are currently seeking the help of anyone that no longer has either of their hands as a result of an 'Act of God' in order to prove that the removal of hands can in fact be accomplished. Officials are also investigating the possibility of using other body parts to write onto copyprotected CDs and the possibility of having God remove those parts as well. This includes using feet, arm, legs, mouth, and other orifices that could hold a pen while marking on a CD.
I'll be the first to admit that he's probably karma whoring, but I don't agree with modding down for it. I say when it comes to posts like this, just let it be. No modding period. +3 is even too much in my opinion.

Years ago, I registered the email account crawdaddy*AT*hotmail*DOT*com. Since then, several other "crawdaddy" accounts have been opened on hotmail. Many of these people forget to tell their friends/services they're signing up with that there is a number that follows their name, ie. crawdaddy69@hotmail.com. I have gotten several misdirected emails, including personal invitations to join someone on a trip, details of someone's personal life, two very detailed accounts of someone's sexual exploits, and one highly suspicious email that indicated something very illegal and fraudulent was going on somewhere and that the "crawdaddy" that should have received it is involved somehow. Of course, I also get exponentially more spam on this account that I do on any other account that myself or my friends have had for the same period of time. I now check my inbox twice a day just to clean out spam so that my hotmail account isn't temporarily disabled because it's reached its limit!

Scene: A crowded bar
Enter a cloaked figure. Under the cloak he carries a cease-and-desist order, the trade weapon of the RIAA. He approaches a group of people.
RIAA member: *waves hand once through air as he speaks* You will buy only pirated CDs.
Group of people: We will buy only pirated CDs.
