The problem is that most people who review things are the very people who seem to have the most hang ups about that thing. This makes their reviews worthless to the rest of us who simply enjoy watching movies or reading books. So Mr. Moviereviewerman, you think Equilibrium had a "derivative, punch-the-keyboard plot." You think it was "crude, but occasionally laugh-out-loud funny, merely for its sheer ridiculousness." You think that a movie like Equilibrium is just too far below your standards. Well I bet you twenty bucks you have a painting in your house that you bought because it matched your couch, how fucking pedestrian.

My point was that the purpose of DeCSS is to be able to make a copy of your DVD. Have you ever misplaced a CD or a DVD? I haven't misplaced the latter, but I have lost a CD here and there and I know others that have, as well. If CDs came with the same copy protection, you would not be able to back it up and use the CD in other ways, ie. copying to your machine and creating a catalogue of all the music you own. Although DVDs are much larger and require much more space than CDs, that point is moot. It's a matter of fair use and being able to use something you've purchased in ways that are within the terms of the copyright, that is to say, in the case of CDs and DVDs, not to distribute them.

Seems like what you're talking about is that producing a device that has genuine ETHICAL purposes but can be misused to break the law is actually UNETHICAL and should be criminalized if you allow others to use it.

    innovation n.
    1. The act of introducing something new.
    2. Something newly introduced.
I believe DeCSS falls under this category.

    stifle v. stifled, stifling, stifles
    v. tr.
    1. To interrupt or cut off (the voice, for example).
    2. To keep in or hold back; repress: stifled my indignation.
    3. To kill by preventing respiration; smother or suffocate.
This is what you're trying to do.

I'm not going to bother explaining to you how DeCSS has ethical or genuine purpose. I will point out, however, that the creators of the internet did not keep it to themselves because it was new technology that they felt should be open to the public. People commit crimes via the internet daily. Do you feel that the innovators of the internet deserve to be behind bars as well? If not, PLEASE respond because I'm very interested in hearing your argument.

Not all "user hostile software" is equally hostile. And I'm very reluctant to call a game that at all.

All this boils down to is the fact that this is a GAME. There are set rules and guidelines. These rules and guidelines are dictated by Sony, the owners of the game. They may also enforce the rules of the game since the players, unlike board games, cannot enforce the rules upon each other. By deciding to play this game, you are expected to play by the rules of the game. If you don't, then you aren't allowed to play. Is it really that terrible if Sony somehow checks your machine to see if you're cheating, even if it means looking at the processes and programs running? Yes and no. It depends on what they do with this information. If they only take the pertinent infomation (what this may be, I do not know), and do not store it, then no, this is not a bad thing. If they store any information, I think it wouldn't reflect well upon them. But they're not, so it doesn't.

Do you feel violated/terrified at the idea that someone might try to keep you from taking money out of the bank when playing Monopoly? What about the fact that you can't see the letters you're picking in Scrabble until after you've drawn them...does that thought disturb you in someway? Do you play poker with people and demand they stop trying to control what you can and cannot see by not showing you their hands?

Not having people "of color" in the film isn't a very big deal when you think of it in terms of reality.

If you're worried about what your kids see, then it is your job as a parent to do one of the following:

    A) Monitor them closer

    B) Trust them

    C) Ban them from all things that may put bad thoughts into their heads

A and B are good solutions. C is the solution that censorware takes...the easy way out. When are people going to step up as parents and take responsibility for their kids instead of pointing fingers? Personally, I would tell them how I feel about the matter and trust them. If they want to look at porn, the internet is just one of many ways to go about doing it. I'm sure kids still steal their dads' magazines and show them to all their friends.
