sorry, but even my grandma knows the difference between right and left.
Well of course. But I can tell you from my experience that teaching the older generation about contextual menus and making the lessons stick can be difficult; your grandmother may have done just fine, but I've taught many more than just one who've had problems dealing with technology. And on top of that, if an oldster has severe arthritis, or the Parkinson's "shakies" as I have seen, a 2+ button mouse can be literally a pain.
Agreed on crop- it's really annoying. I can deal with most of the other issues w/o complaint, but it would have been nice if the letter commands to change tools was copied over exactly (like 'M' for lasso, etc.). I still remember the Photoshop ones over GIMP even though I use the apps about 50/50 depending on whether I am in Linux or my Mac/Win boxes.
I do understand that (I was in HS when that prop was passed) but the inflated property values mean the taxes aren't cheap- just cheaper percentage-wise of the value. My $400k house was costing about $3500 a year in property taxes. It certainly was helpful that the taxes were not double that, but it was still quite a big chunk to chew when my income dropped after a couple layoffs. With other higher costs of goods and services, I would still submit that life in metro-CA is significantly more expensive than other places.
Honestly, I'm not the only one in the situation.:-) It took me longer than normal to want to settle down (travel, career changes, etc.), so I am paying for it by being behind the market.
At 9.3 for the high bracket (that has a low threshold of $27k) I'd say California is on the higher end of income taxes, with most other states being in the 5-6% range. For those of us in the LA/SF/SD metro regions we also have way higher than average housing prices and the associated property taxes that accompany those (for the prop. owners). I recently exited the property market here when the economy tanked (and the work dried up) and am looking out of state now for a move. I was born here, so, it's kind of a bummer, but I look forward to new ventures elsewhere. I'm also planning a service business and I don't want to be stifled by the outrageous workers compensation insurance rates in CA.
The funny thing about the Internet is it makes shopping at local overpriced stores a thing of the past if you put some effort into it. Get thee to PriceWatch.
but in the US (last time I checked) it's a misdimeanor crime
Not to be pedantic, a law that covers misdemeanors such as that are local, not federal. With the thousands of municipalities here, there is quite a range of what is legal and what is not. So what one town would consider an obscenity violation, would not necessarily exist on another's books. Florida has a lot of cities with restrictive obscenity laws as it has a fairly conservative/religious population, wheras here in California you don't find as much of that.
But your basic point is valid. Just so you know I wasn't on ya about that.:-)
mayby not so worth mentioning: Arnold Schwarzenegger
Why not? It doesn't matter what you think of his politics (actually quite moderate for his party- too bad he cant bring them in his direction) or his movies (well c'mon- Terminator is still a classic, no matter what came after)- anyone who is able to reach a level of success like that in the country who arrives as an immigrant is nothing to laugh at.

Umm.. you didn't check that link before posting like the preview warning says, didja? ;-)

Yes, right. I thought my OS9 apps were bundled with my OSX install. I cant remember anymore.
It sure does:
HD > Applications (Mac OS9) > Graphing Calculator
Hehe.. :-)
;-)
I'm terrible with way too much free time on my hands like this weekend.
That's Northern California.
"The Chronicle had become the biggest daily paper in Northern California; in the West, it was second in size to the Los Angeles Times after 1968."
April 1990 LA Times Times circulation reaches an all-time high of 1,225,189 daily and 1,514,096 Sunday, making it the largest daily metropolitan newspaper in the country.
SF Chronicle (California's largest daily paper)
Side note- second largest. LA Times has more than twice the circulation.
Fantastic photos- especially at Shackleton's hut.
Thanks for posting those links.
Those things happen when you go out on Safari.

Good article in today's SF Chronicle
And in the San Diego Union-Tribune

In terms of taxes, Californians aren't taxed any more, on average then the rest of the country.
State income tax rates

Not the week I am stuck on dial-up!
There is a horrible song by Styx called "Too Much Time On My Hands"
I wonder if he has that?
That's nice, Junior, I don't give a shit who makes it, the logo on it is lame.
Yeah, and it's so stylin' if you are in the 7th grade.
I dunno- try asking this guy. Oh wait, he's actually a Lt. General. Perhaps they decided the nutcases should rise above brigadier.
For the record (if you RTFA), I think all religion is a waste of thought.
... bring in some folks who would do what's right for the Company rather than cow-tail to Microsoft...
Um.. that's kowtow.

You've got to be kidding me. Going to the moon transformed the entire industrial structure of the US.
You bet it did. Moon Pie production skyrocketed after 1970.
It's not that any magic occurs based upon the distribution method, it's prosecuting this particular type of crime internationally which is at issue.

Yes, we do. If we let the shuttles die, Congress will be sure to pull the rest of the funding for the manned space program.
Nonsense.
Being on the other side of the fence (an employer), I surely hope Seagate wins this.
C'mon Darl- you don't have to post A/C.
