Right so do these SCSI drives. It ended 3 years ago, and these drives, while technically should be retired. Are still humming along just fine. Now suddenly Seagate wants to change the game in such a fashion that they now control how long you get to write data to there drive. Feels to me like I'm just renting this space, and in 3 years from mfg date. My lease ends.
Doesn't that seem like a nice shift towards storage makers pocket books instead of why not put enough lube infor 20 years (It's nano lube, how much space can this container take. and can't doubling it in some way be just a little more engineering) and just offically support your warranty date of whatever. While the drive will keep running. But obviously like the media we have now at a point your just asking for trouble.
I wonder if this will lower the mean time to failure of these drives? I currently have some old 9G scsi disks that have been running daily since 1998/1999 and still work flawlessly. How much lube are they putting in these drives? It seems to me this could be bad thing(tm) put enough lube in for 3 years, and every 3 years sell new drives.
But to him finding new number is more important. Why does that bother you? Cause he doesn't share your ideals? What's the issue? Why attack him? Oh right cause it's a personal issue to you. Growing up I was deathly alergic to horses/cats, only animal I could have was a dog. On several instances going over for a family dinner at the aunt with a cat would send me to the hospital, or one my uncles who worked with races horses would come home, after showering at the track with pretty much the same reaction. Around the time I was 18, I met my wife who loved cats and we ended up getting one. Strangely it never bothered, then we got another one, cause the first looked bored. Nothing. Then we ended up getting a dog. Still no issue.
The even stranger part is, it seems now the only cats that can still send me running from the room with red eyes and tears streaming down my cheeks from rubbing my eyes is Siamese. Within a couple mins of being in a house with a siamese cat my eyes start watering.
Or buy an industry standard tool (or just steal it like most startups will do). Or wait for years while a group of people try to give you the functionality you need to work.... Hmmmm....
And then you try to use linux for a high I/O load application, that you used to previously run on a cluster of fully populated E6500's. And realise, linux can't handle it and kernel panics.. so you Go back.
So your can compile linux from scratch (snicker, typing make, doesn't make the shit) but you couldn't figure out how to setup X or raid. I see, so FreeBSD has to suck, you couldn't figure it out. Good one.

Problem is, it's a outsourced call center, Verizon gives 2 shits about the call center. The person in the call center is a script reader trained to read a script and answer questions, if they can't it goes to someone without a script (tier 2) who may seem more important, but is general just as a helpless (not at helping you, but at actually doing anything, cause I'm sure verizon has pretty much cut communication to the point, a couple reports are fed up daily, like this is now a big issue, we had 70% call volume for Y issue).
So the mail team at verizon runs off and does this spam change, they don't notify anyone, and if they do, you can bet your wallet the outsourced contracted call center will not get a memo stating the change. (should they? yes, you figure it would do nothing but help, but we all know every company does everything perfect 100% of the time).
So your going to fire the call center guy who is probably hearing this from the people on the phone who are now yelling cause of lost email, etc. When this person has no power, no way to change a thing. (accept maybe your password). Kinda harsh.

Fan fare, then couple weeks before it launches, cut it half, sell it for $400-450, While we all are amazed at the deal! They've adjust nothing and intended to sell it for that price to begin with. It's called marketing:)
Or maybe it's because trying to imagine what 4.7 Billion miles away is in actual distance. It's easy to say oh yah 4 miles away, or 100, or even 1000's. But when you get into milions, and billions of miles. It's humbling to think that there is something out there, that far away. I personally think that is damn cool, and mind numbing at the same time.
