I don't get it. I am not a user on any of those web pages. And I did not see anything wrong with the internet. It is like the Joker said about people freaking out. In this case, it is applied to a few web pages. People do not give a shit about internet censoring, once it is in place. Yet shutting a few websites down, and people are running around in circles, scared and like headless chickens.
My case point.... You do not need all then bullshit web sites. And people are saying "But I need them for contacting friends and families" and my answer to that is "The phone is invented, just make a call".
I catually thought that this was something that had been discovered earlier. I clearly remember that even in unrar.exe in Dos. Back around 1992/93'ish, I had infections as well... So getting a virus from opening a zip/rar/arj/zoo on MS-Dos-6.22 or earlier, was something we were used to.
Back in 2016 I got a different machine, because the one I used, had served it purpouse. It was then, an 6 year old machine and it had become too noisy to be able to use. It was an laptop. So I got a different laptop, and because I knew about EOL on Win7 in 2020, then I decided to switch to Linux full time. Shure I had an advantage, wich was that I have been running Linux on and off since 1995. So I was quite used to how it works, and switching was to me, something without any issues at all. Back in 2016, I was thinking that once we hit 2019, then we would begin to see people panicking. And we would see all sorts of posts were people bitch about MS. And then again.... I am really sorry that I fail to see the reason why it may give anyone a legit reason to bitch about MS this time. Shure... When XP had EOL, then it was actually understandable, as it was the first time. Yet to me, it just looks like people have failed to learn from the past. I am sorry that any software will get old and too hard to service after some years. I am sorry that Win7 is not new anymore. Heck. It is 10 years old, and to my knowledge, even 10 year old Linux distro's are too old to be kept serviceable. Do I bitch when my Linux will reach EOL? Heck no. I will do a complete backup, install a new version and restore my data on that installation. Bitching about an 10 year old Windows? Give me a break. You have been warned by Microsoft for the last 4 or 5 years.
Dude.... That is the same old argument, everytime MS decide to retire a version of Windows. When they retired XP, it was all "I hate Microsoft", "Why are they doing this to me?", "They only want my money", "Microsoft is the worst".... And then people will eighter switch away from Windows, or just jump on the next version of Windows. You cant keep on using old Windows versions for everyday work, that has been retired. All I am saying, is that you need to stop bitching old arguments, move to Win10 or switch to a different choice in operating systems. For me... I switched in 2016, because I retired my used computer at that time. And I thought that it was only 4 years more of using Win7. So I switched to an alternative. Mostly because I never game on my everyday driver. And I have been telling everyone that Win7 will end it's life in 2020. So if you for some magical reason have come across one of those posts, in wich I explained that I have switched to a different operating system, then you have been presented with these facts.
Please stop with these old and tried arguments. You have been warned by both slashdot and other places. And now that it is on it's door step, then you start arguing.... Let me guess.... 5 years from now, you are running Win10 and are happy with it.
2016 was my year of the Linux desktop. I have all what I need for everyday real life on my installation. Entertainment like games and such, is what I have my Playstation-1,2 and 3 for. And my RaspberryPI, and my Amiga's and my C64. No shortage of gaming content in my house. And movies, is what I have my netflix app on my TV for, and I can stream youtube from my phone to my TV. Sooo.... No need for Windows at all. My girlfriend still uses it, because she is playing Sims4. If that ran on Linux, then she would switch instantly, after seeing how well my system is running, and after she have seen all the different desktops that can run on Linux. To her, and to me, Linux are just right for everyday life. Like home banking, social media, text editing and image editing (she has always used Gimp on Windows, and can't stand Photoshop).
Here we are again. Yet another update that shit all over the operating system. And people actually PAY Microsoft money for the operating system? Heh' Microsoft is laughing on their way to the bank.
I have been updating my Xubuntu installation, whenever an update is ready, and have done it since 2016. I have never seen any issues like these. Do I have to remind people again, that they actually paid money for their operating system?!
Nope... There is no shame in that. I just chose to run Linux instead, some 2 years ago. 7 became too heavy after each update, so I thought that when they do end it in 2020, then why not try Linux. I have tried it on and off, since I had it installed first time in the summer of 1995. I have run it in dual boot ever since, and after every second reinstall of any Windows version, I had Linux installed as well. It was just like... I had to give it a serious go, and not just playing with it. And it kind of stuck with me this time. I find it a nice system for the things that I use a computer for. Like word processing, homebanking, email, youtube, surfing, finding information and visiting forums. For gaming, I have vintage computers (PC and Amiga) and a couple gaming consoles. And I have a RaspberryPI if I want to run Linux on Arm. No need for Windows gaming.
I may well be a happy Linux user, and every time I see reports like this, I am glad that I switched 2 years or something ago. That said. WTF is MS doing? This is so unacceptable for those that rely heavy on Windows for actual work. I don't care how much you game, as these issues are of no concern. Yet... If you make a living, using Windows?? WTF Micro-Snot !!
Been there, done that. No thanks.... I do not like cloud storage at all. It was all fine and dandy when I had to share school work, during the education I went through in 2010-2013. Then it was nice to be able to share stuff quickly, whenever code had to be reviewed.
For my personal data? Then I do not want any CPU hog to figure out what files I use over other files and then use bandwith to upload. I want to have my files avaliable at all time. If I need a file, that I had not opened in 1 year or so and the internet is down, then it is kind of useless. The final big issue that I have with cloud storage, is that I want to be in charge of my data, all the time and in all places. If data is on my machine, then it is on that machine and not were other people can access my stuff. Finally. Yes. I know there are hackers/crackers that will try to force access to anyones equipment. I am fully aware of that.
Cloud storage for my personal files? BIG no thanks...
My answer to the question in the headline is a BIG NO.... I have my cellphone that are using 4G all the time, and that is good enough for me. If I want to use a real computer, then I can wait untill I get home.
I remember that Slackware all too well.... It had something that have gone lost in modern distro's.
Namely a report, on how many failed logins on your login, that have been attempted since you last logged in succesfully.
That feature is not active by default anymore, in all mainstream distro's.
Anyway....
I tried Unix, back in 1995, and one month later I discovered that Slackware distro. I tried to install it on my 486dx2-66 with 8mb Ram, and failed misserable in getting stuff working. Through the years, I have kept an close eye on the Linux devellopment and tried many distro's from time to time. It was only in Feb. 2017 that I finally went all in and installed Xubuntu as my main OS on an Thinkpad R61. I was tired of lagging Win7 after all them updates, and the software avaliable for me to use Linux 100% was finally ready.
I am happy to have "tested" Linux all these years, wich have resulted in me not having to go through any learning curve, from that point when I have finally made the big change. Yeah.... a couple of months of combined Linux training every year for the last 22 years did pay off. It is as natural to me, as Dos, Windows 3.11 to Win7 and obscure operating systems.
It's just.... Linux rocks for me personally. And I can still not find my way around Win8, 8.1 and 10. They are so annoying to use.
Anyone remember active desktop on Windows98 ?? No one used it. We all disabled it.
Happy that I have 23 years of first hand Linux experience.
To Microsoft: You do... Whatever you do! (I am done with you)
Ohh, and how was the priciples of earodynamics discovered? Shurely not with the use of science. This is basically a nutcase, trying to use the fruits of science to commit suicide. Let him. One less nutcase on this planet.
70$... 250$???!!!! Wow... Wait WHAT? Oh well... Why do I even care?
Been a happy full time Linux user, since Feb. 2017. So I will not be bothered with the price on Win10.
I have actually only payd for one preinstalled WinXP and one WinVista.
Other than that I have never payd for any operating system in my life.
Most of the time, I was given the software for free. Got MS-Dos-6.22, Win95, Win98, Win2000, and 7 for free.
Even got Win8 and 8.1 for free. Never used the license.
70 and 250 US Dollars.... Are you freaking kidding me?
So... Let me get this straight! If her husband was killed in an auto accident instead
Would she then sue those who build the road?
Or would she sue those who build the car that drove into her husband?
Why, when she actually sue's twitter. Why would she not sue those who created the internet?
Twitter can't be held reliable for this. They are after all doing something as of now.
I allways use USB harddrives, and I never ever let them be powered on, when they are not in need.
So I still have my old 3.5# 250gb PATA based drive in my closet. It is used for backing up edited/changed and new stuff, once every month.
Yeah... Those new 2.5# laptop SATA based usb-powered drives are crap. The old WD drives that Ellements were based on, are great.
Even my old 20mb drive in my Unisys 80286 computer is still working flawlesley (it's a MFM-drive).
Not planning to back that up, and it shall run til it dies. And it should have, as it is from 1989.
Well.... It all depends on a given sociaty, if this is good or bad. Yes, it is allways good for the customer and the seller. But for a given state?
Now...
If you have a country, like Denmark, were you get import charges slammed on top of everything (no exeption) sold at 11,5 US Dollars.
Then this is good news. Good because you as a customer get's more choices, than the ones that can only be bought locally.
This again makes a certain kind of poison, if you'r state is based on a wellfare system, that is looking after those in need, by letting tarrif's and heavily taxing those who have/or earn more than they can use. The system is not geared towards that.
If you on the other hand, have a system that does not care for those in need, in the same kind of way and matter. Well... Then it really does not make that big a difference. Other than more can be sold and bought.
Reading on the WTO webpage, just tell's me that yes, these things are loosing import tarrif's. On the other hand, something else will get slammed with tarrif's instead. (can't remember what exactly). So this is not removing tarrif's. They have actually just pushed them from one kind of good's to another. Hence, not really removing them at all. Reading that.... Well.... Makes sence. It's is just a way of dealing with a changing global market, and making things suit the global need better.
So true.... If someone want hardware that are build to last. They need to dig around for computers or consoles from 1989 or earlier. Machines from that time, are build like a tank.
There are two choices, and you have a difficult time choosing? WOW!!!!!
Do you need you'r choices to be spoonfed by a nurse or something.
THERE ARE TWO CHOICES.
Ask you'r kid's, if you (by any chance) haven't noticed what they like the best.
I don't get it. I am not a user on any of those web pages. And I did not see anything wrong with the internet. It is like the Joker said about people freaking out. And this comes as a surprise? I guess school shootings are too boring now. Own it America, or change your law.
And what supports the Turtles? ;-)
