    The USD only has value because people BELIEVE it has value. If everyone decided that the USD isn't trustworthy, it'd lose it's value almost instantly.

    Bitcoin doesn't have the largest military/intelligence complex in the world willing to bomb the holy fuck out of anyone who challenges its value.

    Don't believe it? Well, have you seen a single arrest of any HSBC employee for doing any of this? A single arrest for any of the customers who where committing these crimes? And even if you did see an arrest, do you really think they'll get convicted? Actually do any prison time?

    Those are all political and social costs, not engineering. All it would take for nuclear to be a lot cheaper would be a change in the political and social attitudes toward nuclear power (so that plant construction didn't have to go through layers of NIMBY bullshit).

    Solar is a useful supplement. But it can't replace a reliable form of base load generation like nuclear. That's true no matter how good batteries get.

    Did anyone ever stop to think that boys are better, and more interested, in some things than girls (and vice versa)?

    I'm getting very sick of the daily "It's our fault that there aren't more women in tech" SJW blame-fest here on Slashdot. Are there fashion industry sites out there with a daily "It's our fault aren't their more straight men in fashion" blame-fest? Because, if not, then STFU and accept that some groups are just more attracted to certain fields than others. What do you propose as an alternative, that people's career choices be FORCED on them?

    Every time I think of Gamergate, I'm reminded of that scene in PCU where the protestors break out the blank placards and start writing the latest liberal cause-of-the-moment slogans on them. Some people are just always looking for an oppressor to blame for all their problems, and some cause to give their pathetic lives some meaning. And being the drama queens they are, they feed on any criticism as further evidence that they're being oppressed.

    "Shutting down trolls" is all-too-often Silicon Valley speak for "silencing anyone who expresses conservative or controversial ideas." Gamergate is a great example. Anyone not screaming "Mysogyny!" and parroting the latest feminist line is censored on Reedit and many other forums.
