With steam, all I need to have is my login.
So far valve has done an ok job with steam considering they are the first people to do this.

I used icard at sebring this year. The system was launched a year ago in sebring(february) but it did not work at that event. Starting a month later, all panoz racetracks(including sebring and road atlanta)had icard.

    Review:
Nice idea but horrible implementation. I found the interface very flawed. Basically, you can get the order of the cars, last lap speed and some details on the car/driver. You can't get a list of lap times, fastest laps or other usefull items. The speed could also use some work. Even though I go to these racetracks once a month, I will not consider purchasing an icard because the product is that bad.

CART had a system last year where you rented a handheld that let you do icard stuff as well as multiple video feeds. The cost was under $100 a weekend. I never used that system, but the demo looked cool.

I wish these racetracks would just go to some sort of java applet that ran on phones. Most people that go to these things have phones capable of doing this. I think nascar does this with nextel phones. The racetracks would not have to invest much $$$, and I would pay $10 a day to use it.

They are the only company who I would buy an assembled computer from. They do it right. The machines that we bought from them run 100% stable and have never given us problems. They are not alway the cheapest, but the quality AND support we got was worth it.

On the personal side they were doing linux before it became fashionable. They also tend to know what is going on in the community. Recently they have been hiring like mad, snagging developers(ie. One week later Realplayer 5.0 was released and Microsoft was screwed. Realplayer 4.0 was only out for a couple of weeks. I have had a cable modem from Intermedia/@home for 4 months and am generally satisfied.
They do DHCP, but they confirmed that it is really static and one doesn't have to use it. It is bound to a username( dhcp -h) and not a MAC so I have used many NICs without a problem. The service has gotten better over time( I was a beta customer, got a free install) and I have only had one extended outage this Monday morning.
The problems with cablemodems in my are is latency. The slowdown occurs someplace in the extended @home network and not locally. Sites on the net are usually about 200ms away. The pipe is wide(usually 1mb) but it has latency problems.
The problem with DSL in my area is that you have to deal with Bellsouth. I have worked with them when I was involved with an Inetrnet Cafe and that is a huge drawback, They regularly reset our line and performed maintenence wihtout teling us.
The prices of the two services are also different. Cablemodems cost $50 to install and $40 a month. DSL is $400 to install and $60 a month.

In my area at least DSL is not an option.

I have heard this argument before. Linux wasn't built by lowering our standards for the lowest common denominator. It is a quality kernel. We have mad progress in the past because we went on to better things, not because we were looking for mass acceptance or ease of use. Compatibility, relability and functionality are valid reasons to change our operation.

I do not beleive that we should cater to the needs of the most clueless user at the cost of the greater community. If we can do it without sacrificing quality or speed great, but it shouldn't be our driving force.
