which hammered our Windows servers for more than a week since it was a 1.1 GB update, and they for some reason decided to save the update in 11 KB files with another about 10 KB index file for every one of those files.
I somewhat disagree. Most systems exist for many years or even decades after they should have been replaced. Here's an old but good article from Joel on Software:
It talks about how code rewrites almost always fail. I could easily come up with another hundred examples. We've started rewriting our inventory system three times and failed three times. I heard the last failure cost over 20 times what the software originally cost to write. If you're the go to guy for a legacy system and are willing to slog away at maintenance and work on the uninteresting problems that others don't want to, then you are a great asset.
a single $100 bill for a cash deposit over $5k. Bank of America's fees are killing us. Tellers don't get paid that much, and I know since I used to work as one at BoA, so 30 cents for each bill when you were expected to count about 100 bills per minute is great profit for them.
Plus women just work fewer hours. I pulled our door badge logs a few months ago, and even with the report screwing-up and not counting men that worked more than 24 hours straight, men still worked about 106% longer hours than the women. IIRC, the average for women was 36 hours a week and 74 hours a week for the male engineers. Of course the women are going to make less.
Or even just the cost of depositing cash. We pay 30 cents per hundred minimum to Bank of America to get them to accept our cash. Otherwise, they scream at us and call the police to have us thrown out. My boss thinks it's wrong for BoA to refuse to accept cash, but the local police that gave him a bloody nose disagree.
Notice I said minimum. They'll usually charge 30 cents to count a single $100 bill. If you have smaller bills, and especially change, they'll steal even more from your cash as a fee.
Plus like when reddit banned/r/coontown, those people that were previously in one place now infest other subreddits. It's best to keep them in one place.
Plus, many people don't have connections fast enough to stream video. I know where I live in Seattle, I certainly can't. I paid the $15 per month for HBO Now to watch Game of Thrones, because I want to support it, but I had to pirate it in order to watch it. I received a DMCA letter for every(!) episode, but ignored them.
To be fair, Microsoft is doing a lot of remodeling rather than tearing down and replacing. I have four friends that used to work at Microsoft Red West in Redmond that are now working in temp space in Issaquah while their space is being remodeled.
To be fair, most of the infrastructure in this neighborhood are crumbling. It isn't just a lack of cable or poor phone lines. It took us about a year of fighting to get a phone line good enough to get our FAX machine to work reliably.
When they, for example, have government-granted monopolies in Seattle, of course they're going to be against competition. Posting this from a shared dial-up connection at work where we're in their monopoly area, but they don't offer service so we're stuck with whatever CenturyLink offers which is currently only ISDN or dial-up.
will Facebook call the police on me? This sucks. Someone already did that to me on reddit, and they located where I live from a picture I took of a pot shop out my bedroom window. It took me hours to talk my way out of being taken into custody.
Because a few years ago Obama and Hillary refused to use the out of date government phones, because they wanted to get things done. They both ignored laws that were barriers to helping the people because they love us so much.
Trump wants to do the same thing, but for the wrong reasons so he, yet again, is in the wrong.
using algorithms to flag purchases from locations which would be outside typical spending parameters.
And they false too damn often. I travel for work, and I've had my card disabled several times in the same month. The most humorous recent one was when I went to Walmart just a couple of miles from my home. My credit card company not only disabled my card, but they also closed my account. Their excuse was that since I had never used my card there in the over twenty years I had it, that it looked like fraud since most people either shop at Walmart or never shop there. I ended-up having to open a new account and get a new card. That also messed-up my credit.
In Uber's case, imagine how mad customers would be if they're traveling internationally and don't speak the language then get stranded. I can see where that's a difficult balance to make.
I guess you also call Chelsea Clinton Chelsea Hubbell. Just because you can look at someone and use "common" sense to tell their father isn't who is claimed doesn't mean that it's true. Often times, like especially with statistics, common sense is wrong.
for much of my adult life, I have no sympathy. I'm working several hours more than than that seven days a week. Most of my friends in tech are too.
The article should have mentioned that.

What? Much of this country has Comcast, so more than five total hours of outages happen nearly every week.

Well you certainly do sound like one of those Russians. They object to being called Russian. They seem ashamed of admitting what they be.

speech, you must limit free speech.
they refused to release before and after pics, so this isn't very convincing evidence. It's almost like they're trolling.

Hey that helps once a year or so when we reboot our Red Hat systems.
After nearly 35 years since I did my first programming for hire, that's the biggest difference I've noticed.

Google has already punished CONservative sites, so this is a good thing.
then decides to try to play whack-a-mole. They don't design security in from the start like Linux and especially Red Hat.
