  1. Re:Time out, Slashdot, and RTFA on Germans Pursuing Kiddie Porn In Second Life · · Score: 1
Just a little nitpick of your comment. First you say:

After the Second Life Herald conducted a widely circulated interview with the operator of Jailbait, a couple SL griefers and I went into the sim to try to figure out exactly how we could fuck with it. It was difficult to enter--a highly protected area. When we finally got in... Then, you mention:

But on the Internet, it is generally limited to dark, unknown, secret corners: password protected forums, underground Usenet groups, anonymous image boards.

Contrast this to Second Life, which is experienced as an open, freely accessible world, where one can walk around and see anything as it exists. No effort is needed to find these things--they can be found through mere wandering. It is experientially different, even if qualitatively similar, to the most depraved shit the Internet has to offer. So, you had to actually look really hard, "fuck with" a highly protected area in order to get the "bad stuff" in SL. How is that different from having to figure out the secret corners of the internet where this stuff is at? To me, it looks like you're actually saying that whatever is going on SL is as protected as the few Internet sites that condone or even promote these kind of services.

I'm very much against RL child pornography, because actual children are being abused, and the main reason why the accounts were banned from SL (according to TFA). But the virtual stuff, although tasteless, indecent, immoral, etc., is just a puppet show where no actual child is involved (the lesser of evils, I guess).

On another note, if virtual pornography is illegal in Germany, isn't the TV show reporter now a felon for acquiring/viewing/distributing the videos?

Google has been hoping to expand for at least a year, combing the Bay Area for suitable sites, including downtown San Francisco and San Jose."

And "voting with your wallet" is exactly what I did. I had a Lexmark All-in-one printer that I received as a gift, but I didn't use it much. When I tried to print some color pages after like a month of not using it, the color was all screwed. I guess the ink dried on the head, or something, and no matter how many times I ran the cleaning procedure, I couldn't reestablish the color quality. The cartridge was still half full, and I was really angry, more so because I found out how much a replacement cartridge costs.

Fortunately, there was this promotion on a local Office Max that if you brought your old printer, you'd get a very good discount on a new one. So, for the same price of a replacement cartridge for my lexmark, I got instead a new Epson CX3500 with separate ink cartridges, and I'm very happy since. I don't know what office max does with the used printers, but I hope they kill that beast.

not YET, anyway. Microsoft is definetly interested in some kind of hardware mp3 player. They're always expanding their business (as many corporations do). You have the X-Box as an example.

However, corporate 'identity' isn't exclusive to MS. Most large corporations have some ways to 'encourage' employees to stick with the brands they make.

I think MD players have a niche group among musicians, mainly because it lets them record directly to the player, and some even have digital in, so recording concerts and such is just a matter of connecting the MD to some audio-out on the consoles. Now that Sony admitted their mistake, they even might release some firmware update so that MD players support MP3 natively.

Have they considered using a Minidisc player? The one I have (MZ-NHF800) has optic line-in plus mic-in, for digital and analog recording. It is a Hi-MD unit, which supports recording in PCM mode, or in compressed mode (ATRAC3 encoding, Sony's proprietary format). You can then upload your music to a computer with the software. Sony has just recently released an utility to convert uploaded music from your device to WAV files. And with 1GB discs, you get 94 minutes of PCM audio, or 2040 minutes with highest compression mode. You have limitless amount of storage, as long as you keep buying minidics.

    All this for $200, btw.

  20. OK, how about support for the other models? on HP Linux Laptop Is A Winner · · Score: 1

I find this as a great news for the linux community. To have a major company take the steps required to make a laptop work with linux isn't an easy task.

However, now that HP has taken the first step, how about supporting the other laptop models that they sell. I have gentoo linux on an HP zt3000, and while 99% of the system works (WiFi, Ati Radeon, WXGA, IrDA, etc), there's still that 1% that needs HP support, like a driver for the SD media slot (although there's some work by some people to make this work).

I think HP is doing this as an experiment, to see how will the community react, how will customers use their laptop and how much tech-support issues will they have to solve. I wish them luck and hope they get behind this fulltime.

That's true, but ELF has been the standard on linux for quite some time. Most, if not all, binary linux packages have the applications in ELF format. If forced to remove ELF from linux, all distributions would have to change their binary packages. Hundreds if not thousands of GB of binary data on the net would become useless, as they would have to recompile every package to the new format.

I guess source-based distributions would have a better time with this problem.
