  1. Re:SR-71 Blackbird on Technologies that Have Exceeded Their Expectations? · · Score: 2, Insightful

Very true. But the U2 (which I believe came before the Blackbird) has been proven to be a more economical and versatile spy plane. I'm not even sure if there are any Blackbirds out of mothball anymore, but there's several (upgraded) U2's.

Yeah, I get this same result, almost 100% of the time. When ever I get a choice of downloading by ftp or http, I usually just choose http now because it seems much faster. I can't explain why either. And I don't buy the fact that ftp is more reliable now adays... I've yet to download a 650mb iso image by http and have it be corrupted.

  5. Grain of Salt on Should You Trust Website Customer Reviews? · · Score: 2, Insightful

After reading through several reviews, you should probably be able to make a fair judgment on weather the reviews are valid or not. If some product gets 658 reviews all in one day, yeah, I'd probably think something's fishy, and not trust its reviews... go to another review site. Are people being payed to write reviews? Who knows, but it's definitely possible. You have to take every thing you read with a grain of salt. The way I do it is read through a collection of reviews and just get a sense of weather they look legitimate or not, then read them through again to get an idea if the product is really what I'm looking for.

I enjoy reading the reviews of music gear at: www.harmonycentral.com

  6. My Answers on What's Keeping You On Windows? · · Score: 1

I have both a windows box and two linux boxes. Why do I still have a windows box?

    a) Work. Everything we do at work is Microsoft related, and if I happen to take any work home with me, I need a Windows box.
    b) Games. I'm not a big gamer, but the few that I have don't work with linux, or wine for that matter.
    c) my scanner doesn't work with linux.
    d) some of the Open Source counter parts of windows applications, just arn't as good. examples, gAIM tends to not show buddies online where AIM does show them correctly, xmms often complains that the audio channel (or something like that) is been used and can't play a file, so I end up having to exit the app, and go back in to get it to work again. WinAmp doesn't have that problem.

My Linux boxes are used as 1) a firewall, and 2) on my 400mhz sony Viao, because any Windows OS just dogs on it. With Debian and Blackbox that thing flies.

How come they didn't take the camera rover out and put the one with the drill in there to drill a hole through the new found door?

I thought they had xrayed the door already, did they know that the new door was there?

How many doors and how many specials will it take to reach the secret chamber?

Who was that British-accent babe commentator? Did any other guys here want to drive their rover up her secret chamber?

  12. Re:Fastest gun in the West! on 16,000 CWRU Computers Getting Gigabit Ethernet · · Score: 2, Interesting

"Western Reserve" is a term that was left over from the old original 13 colonies. When the original colonies of the United States were formed, most of the western borders were left blank, since the settlers didn't know how far west the land went. In 1786, Ohio was actually part of State of Connecticut. Connecticut gave up its claims to Western lands of the United States, except for a portion of northeastern Ohio known as the Connecticut Western Reserve. Later, the land was sold to the Connecticut Land Company, which surveyed and settled the region, but the name Connecticut Western Reserve - or just Western Reserve - continued to be used to describe the northeastern section of Ohio.

  15. Re:private property on Taking Issue With The Outer Space Treaty · · Score: 1

Oh I know, I understand that. I'm just saying it's going to cost a lot of money to do just that. Only the rich or corporations will be able to afford such ventures. Most people are not going to have that ability to make their fortunes on this new land. It's not like whipping up a few boats and crossing the Atlantic.

Unless of course there is a more costly way to get off this planet....

How many people do you think would want to buy or have enough money to buy a land title on the Moon or Mars? A lot perhaps in the /. world, but in the general population of Earth, I bet not many. Too many issues on Earth to worry about for most people. So what happens when there is little interest and only a few people buy this land. Well, they'll be paying $10,000 per pound tickets to go visit their land so they can kick the dirt around a bit.

I don't think selling people land titles is the answer because I see very little interest in the general population of the world.
