you can save another 500 mb by deleting everything under system32/dllcache. These are backups of system libraries that can be retrieved from the cd if needed, and they are rarely.
Also the driver cache in windows/driver cache/i386 (?) can be deleted, although you will have to break out the cd if you install any new hardware windows already supports.
if you are short on disk space, trading 500mb for swapping the cd once every 6 months is a great trade off.
Yeah, I've experienced the same on some of my trips abroad. I've paid about 20 dollars in Nepal and Brazil to see a doctor, a test or two, and drugs. In Greece, I received some emergency care for free.
Now contrast that with the US... I needed care for an wound+infection on my leg and had to pay 1500 !!! dollars for the privelege of maybe a full hour of their time, bandages, and antibiotics. Thank god it wasn't worse.
Now I don't think health care should be free, but I don't think it should cost thousands of dollars either. I can't believe how F'd up medicine is today.
I just wanna pay the true, fair cost for things, directly. That would probably be one hundred dollars or so for a minor procedure and 2 or 3 for something midrange like the examples above. The poor could be subsidized if the true cost was too much, maybe like foodstamps or something.
Until that happens, I guess I'll just have to drive to Mexico whenever I need medical care.
Please.. Bush is a fool, and I won't be voting for him next month, but comparing him to Hitler is rediculous. You do yourself a disservice, and undermine the other good points you made.
You seem to conveniently forget the tens of thousands killed under Saddam, or the two wars he started, execution/torture of political enemies, or the gassing of the Kurds, just to name a few examples.
What about the generations of Iraqis suffocated in past decades, with no opportunities or freedom of speech? 25 million lives wasting away. Where was your outrage then?
The truth is the war was fought for the wrong reasons (wmd), but it was time for a change in Iraq anyway. The standard european practice of ignoring genocide or worse on their own doorstep, (see the real hitler or milosevic), is not good enough. No one likes war, but evil must be fought. Ignoring it because, "my life is great here" as you would have us do is just as evil, in my opinion.
The main problem is that Bush and his cronies are not quite smart enough to do the job intelligently. But even if the occupation were handled perfectly there would lots of problems just like now. At least Iraq has the possiblitly of a future now, although it may turn out worse for quite a while.

I think 1) could be usefull. Hardware firewalls do have their advantages over software implementations, the most obvious being decreased cpu utilization.
If you already have a separate firewall then I guess you could just not turn the nforce fw on. The single chip does all the processing so hopefully you don't have to feel like the feature is wasting space and energy when it is off.
I usually get a mail from slashdot when I get a reply. Sorry it took me so long. Maybe this time the mail didn't come or was lost, or I deleted it by mistake. Anyway, I remembered the question and looked back through my log to find the post and any replies.
So to reply, I appreciate your points and generally agree with you. My project is playing with linux now to address a few of the things you mention, such as including only the best technology for each area (not 5), and good documentation.
I am just playing at the moment, however, and have no idea if the project has any future. At the very least I am improving my skills.
It has come with me around the world. Lots of room for backpacking, padded laptop compartment, front cellphone pocket, and a rugged look. This is nice because it doesn't scream, "STEAL ME!"
I have the nicer "monochrome" color which is acceptable even in the office I think. Here is the Recon II in the same color as mine:

Funny you should mention... I am working slowly on a project now and would like to hear what you think is wrong, outside the blinding obvious. Don't be afraid to think too big either.
Get a $50 NAT box to protect you until you get it patched and secure.
I wouldn't use Windows on the internet without one.
Alternative: If you are too cheap to invest in the NAT, turn off all those services, network dcom (dcomcnfg), and turn on the XP firewall and you will probably be able to last a few minutes to get the patches.
I think that one of the biggest problems is letting engineers and other propeller-heads design gear.
Let engineers design the IC's and real designers build the interface us mouth-breathers can actually use efficiently.
Case in point: What kind of rain-man type thought 3 different HDTV resolutions would be a good idea??? This is a TV for !@&@#$-sake. On/ Channel UP/Down/Volume are all I need with a picture that looks great with automatic settings.
It's gotta work for me and joe six without needing to reprogram the tv everytime I wanna change the channel. </grumble> =)
As I mentioned before, heheh... I have been using Win Server/XP 2003 64 bit edition on my Itanium for well over a year.
The install picked up all the hardware and installed suitable drivers too. The OS is NOT alpha quality, although amd64 is newer and it is not surprising that drivers are lagging.
Right, I thought the same thing. Paying overtime has exactly nothing to do with schedule flexibility.

A scandisk beforehand would be another good idea as well.
NAV definitely has kernel level drivers installed, for things like auto scanning files read by the filesystem, among other things.
...?
These are the types of things that break during this kind of upgrade, so you'll probably have to get the next version.
As for UT, maybe it excercises bugs in other drivers, like video or sound or

read the first sentence again to find your answer. =)
actually, I think it was NT 3.5 that had PPC support. I think they dropped PPC and mips at NT4 and then Alpha at WinXP.
I could be wrong though.
Hi,
I finally read your reply in this other thread:

hilarious and oh so true.
I usually cringe at the grammar and spelling nazis but jeez..... it's "know" not "now." Ya did it twice so it can't be just a typo.
Have a nice day. =)

I've been living in Brazil the last 6 months and browsing slashdot occasionally. I can tell you cafe rates never approached $3.00 much less $3.50.
I'm in Salvador paying 4 reis ~= $1.25. Yes, I've been to the more expensive south too.

And while we're at it, what's wrong with Mexico?
I mean in terms of comparing it to Brasil as you mentioned above.
Remember,

Vmware shouldn't load you down unless the vm's are actively computing or you don't have enough ram.
Testing web pages shouldn't do either. w2k doesn't need 256mb generally, maybe you can free up some ram.

Think of all these side projects as a testbed where experimentation can produce new ideas. Hopefully, the best ones rise to the top.
I believe it is analogous to the investment in R&D a commercial outfit would make.
