  1. Germany on Free Beer That's Free as in Speech · · Score: 2, Insightful

I just came back from sixteen days in Europe pretty recently (my first visit) and it's true - though the majority of places at which I drank beer kept it in refrigerators, their temperature was nowhere near as low as we keep them in the US. (This was nice when you go to butter your bread in the morning, incidentally). German beer tastes pretty good warm. You should give it a try sometime.

I get really sick of this crap that's posted around here though about how we only keep ours cold to kill the flavor. It's not true. As the wise man a few posts below me indicated, we just like cold beverages around here. (In Nebraska, it has been over 40 degrees Celsius for the past week if you need an idea of why that might be) Beer snobbery is HUGE on Slashdot, among both Americans and Europeans and pretty much everyone else here. Snobbery would really lose its effectiveness if you didn't have a great story you completely made up so that you could more verbosely look down on something, right?

I had by far the best beer I have ever had during those days in Germany and Belgium. (In fact, if anyone knows where I can get a bottle of Chimay for less than $6 I would love to know about it). When I got back to Nebraska, however, the first thing I wanted to drink was an ice cold Pabst Blue Ribbon. There's nothing wrong with a little variety, and I'm just not quite enough of an elitist asshole to complain about a national tradition, I guess.

  4. Forget the law on Teacher Fired for P2P Lecture · · Score: 1

I agree with you that you can't really change the law. Of course, corporations can only buy laws because no one really cares about any of it. To change the law, a lot more people than just some guys on Slashdot would have to give a rat's ass one way or the other, and they JUST DON'T.

How about just don't buy their particular brand of entertainment? If you disagree with their control over their own assets, why not listen to music that falls outside the boundaries of their empire? I see dozens of great bands every year that are not on major record labels, and I live in Lincoln, Nebraska of all places. If you're near Chicago, Lawrence, Denver, Minneapolis, Seattle, Austin, or anywhere like that there are some really kick ass acts around ALL THE TIME, most of whom bear no affiliation to the RIAA whatsoever.

If the RIAA/MPAA REALLY gets under your skin and the skins of about a thousand other Slashdot posters as much as you continue to claim, why do you want anything to do with their products in the first place?

Alternatives do exist, and they don't suck just because they're not millionaires and they don't have platinum records or whatever. Hundreds of bands have garnered enough national attention to be able to live off of touring and small record sales simply because they are good enough that people want to hear them. The idea that you have to sign some soul crushing contract and join a major label to make a living is only for people with big gold dollar signs in their eyes. No one REALLY needs the RIAA to get their shit out there.

That's pretty much what you're defending with your analogy, right? You're saying you have a RIGHT to DISTRIBUTE someone else's movie. Call me up the first time you publish a book. I'm going to undercut your publisher's sale price since I have the right to give everything away, after all.

It's a personality type. These people also complain at great length that the only reason they've never accomplished anything is that society measures their value incorrectly. Seriously, they are a dime a dozen.

I went to college with some extremely intelligent, highly motivated friends who got excellent grades because they dedicated themselves to their schoolwork. I slacked off like crazy and got a low GPA and barely finished my degree. Do I make an excuse that I'm anything but a lazy slacker? No way. Do I call myself a misunderstood genius? Again - NO FUCKING WAY.

Your ability to apply yourself to something is *important* if you are going to try to impress people with how brilliant you are. If you're not concerned with that (I never was) then quit making dumb excuses like you're an inventor genius and just admit that you're fucking lazy.

You know, I already posted pretty much the same thing I am about to somewhere else, but you made me think about it some more.

I live in the US. Our government is, in my opinion, a fair representative of the opinions, the desires, and the weaknesses of the general populace. Everyone is telling cynics such as yourself that you should work to improve the government if you don't like it, but I am going to go ahead and disagree with all of those people - you can't change anything. Ever.

You are absolutely right to be cynical; however, I am not one to believe that politics works the way it does because the people at the top are attempting to exploit everyone else. I work for the State of Nebraska, so let me give you and all the other "oppressed" people some advice: the US government is the way it is because of two things and only two things: unbelievably massive inefficiency, and total, unabashed apathy. Seriously, it goes from the lowest levels of government available (i.e. some low level programmer such as myself) to some of the most influential offices around (Congress).

I am not making a blanket statement about ALL politicians; as in American society, there are people with genuine ambitions and closely held beliefs who want to make something great out of their life. In general, however, our government is EXACTLY like the general US population - you do whatever you need to do to maintain an adequate life for yourself - you go to work, you do your job, you push all ambition out of your mind completely and forget about your dreams and you just live. And you know what, most people are fine with that.

We in the US have exactly the government we want, and exactly the one we deserve. You may not like it, and I usually don't, but such is the nature of our lazy society. Do you really think that our government could exist in its form if it wasn't satisfactory to most people? That's freedom for you, right there.

I bet we wouldn't. There would, as usual, be a huge crying shitstorm from the religious zealots, but then nothing would ever come of it, because all they're doing is political posturing.

The nature of the US government is such that the only real measuring stick of success for most politicians is in their ability to maintain their careers as elected officials over an extended period of time. The notion that they should censor things, rather than springing out of any real belief that it is right to do so, springs instead from their desire to temporarily please a particular piece of their constituency. As it turns out, actually following through and banning something is completely unnecessary to that end - merely talking about it is good enough.

The FBI might start taking a closer look at people who bought the thing though. That wouldn't surprise me at all.
