"Commercial software is built by carefully selected and screened teams of programmers working to build proprietary, secure software. This process is designed to monitor the security and ownership of intellectual property rights associated with the code. "
Wait a minute. Someone designed the process by which commecrial software is built. Why hasn't someone patented it yet?
What this slashdot thread has most informed me about, is the fact that most of the book snobs complaining about suggested authors have lost the ability to enjoy a story as a story.
Everyone take a moment of silence to mourn these poor people.
Because English is modelled after the way it is used the phrase 'spell checker' is now the grammatically correct name for the program which checks your spelling.
The definitions in English change as usage changes. English teachers in general really hate that it works this way.
How long have you been reading Slashdot not to know that Anime is a category. Don't want to see anime news? Go to your profile, edit your preferences and check the box marked 'Anime' in the 'Exclude Stories from the Homepage'
As for your question as to why this is news for nerds...... There are nerds who like Anime, they read here, and submit stories here. Not to mention that the very authors of the site enjoy Anime, and they are nerds. So it is quite obviously 'news for nerds'
The fat people will die while they are still paying into the system, while you, Mr Healthy, will die of some wasting age related disease long after you have retired.
Probably the reason they aren't allowed to give it out, is if they 'slip' and allow something on the list through, the parents can throw the list back in their face.
Well, seeing as they're suing because of the playstation/ps2 and xbox console peripherals, which at least in the case of the playstation use the same off-center disk (albeit 2 of them), one does indeed wonder why Nintendo was left off.
Perhaps, the big N is already licensed with immersion.
"No DVD in the GameCube allows them to be $100 cheaper than both the PS2 and the Xbox. "
Nice, but completely wrong. No DVD movie ability basically saves them $20 in licensing fees (Which on the Xbox the consumer has to pay anyway by purchasing a special remote). Also, something you might have forgotten. Sony makes money whether you buy DVD movies OR PS2 games.
...not in any way shape or form. I don't get to add up all the bits in my PC to come up with a number. My PC is a 32bit machine regardless of the other chips floating around in the box.

Anon is right in saying that there have been other logging tools for Linux, linuxbsm in particular has come a long way. Unfortunately though, some of these tools are either focussed on different logging capabilities (eg: swatch is a log file watcher, it alerts users when a particular line occurs in arbitrary log files, and can actually be used in conjunction with SNARE), or seem to be stalled in development.
SNARE is more like the Windows NT event logger, or the Solaris BSM subsystem - but we hope that the experience we've had with these systems (and others: AIX, netware, Unicos, ACF2/RACF, etc.) will lead to an even better implementation for Linux.
The team at InterSect made sure that we held off releasing SNARE until we were confident that it could stand on it's own feet against the auditing subsystems from other operating systems.
The positive feedback that we're getting (thanks Sinner!) is certainly proving that people are interested, and we made the right decision.

Someone has forgotten that English is not a dead language and that if enough people use and understand a word it becomes part of the language.
...but I had to say it anyway.

"Hey, just because a bastardised phrase is in a dictionary it doesn't make it right."
Actually dictionaries document usage. And so yes, the name being in a dictionary shows that it is being correctly used.

"Sure, a magician might find it handy when he's checking his spells but, for the rest of us, a spelling checker would be a much more useful addition."
I don't know about you, but most of us do just fine with our Spell Checker. We often use it to spell check our documents.
"(I'm not really a fan of Japanimation : It all seems a tad too pedophilic),"
Obviously you either:
a) Do not know the real meaning of the word pedophilia
-or-
b)Have not seen anything near a wide enough spread of Anime.

I suspect it is not considered that under that law at all, but is refered to by terms such as sexual abuse of a minor.
The fat people will die while they are still paying into the system, while you, Mr Healthy, will die of some wasting age related disease long after you have retired.
Bzzzt, there is no doctrine of first sale as applies to the 'service' being rendered.
You have the full legal right to sell someone your CD. You don't have the right to sell the service being provided to someone else.
Loss leading. Razor blade companies seems to be the canonical example.
"By your definition, the kid working at Baskin Robbins making your sundae is an artist. Kind of trivializes musicians and painters, doesn't it?"
Not at all, unless musicians and painters have an opinion of themselves higher than it should be.
I play the Horn in F and the Irish Tin Whistle. Music is an art, so are trades and skills when done particularly well.

...you didn't bother providing any evidence of your claim. So naturally this is hearsay, and not what I would consider insightful.
"Sony PlayStation2 - "the third place" ring any bells?"
Yah, except for one thing. It is currently in 1st place. So I'm not sure what you were going for.

...that you aren't going to back that up. I mean, right now you're basically in the realm of supposition.
Was the 'HomeStation' rumor announced before the original PS2 Linux kit? I'm pretty sure it wasn't.
re: Reedy Creek Improvement District.
However I suspect it was sarcasm as I think Disney had a hand in authoring the act.
Slashdot seems to be very U.S.-centric. Do you have any plans to be more international in your scope?
Slashdot is U.S.-centric. We readily admit this, and really don't see it as a problem. Slashdot is run by Americans, after all, and the vast majority of our readership is in the U.S. We're certainly not opposed to doing more international stories, but we don't have any formal plans for making that happen. All we can really tell you is that if you're outside the U.S. and you have news, submit it, and if it looks interesting, we'll post it.

For whatever reason I do this as well. I don't press random buttons but there is much mouse wiggling and marking random text.
